- Farasis as joint venture partner for Turkish automobile manufacturer TOGG
- “Race of Range”: The combination of energy density and charging capacity makes the difference
- Cars, commercial vehicles and stationary storage – all with different battery requirements
dr. Stefan Bergold, since 01. May 2021 Head of Business Development EU and US and since 01. August also General Manager at Farasis Energy Europe, has in this episode of the electric car news.net podcast talked to me about the battery manufacturer that has existed since 2002. Founded a good 19 years ago in the USA, the company initially gained a foothold in the motorcycle battery sector. In the meantime, however, it is at the forefront, especially in the field of battery-powered e-mobility.
The Chinese supplier Farasis Energy only had a strong presence in the media in mid-September. The focus was on rumors about the local supply of battery cells to Daimler, the departure of Sebastian Wolf to the Volkswagen Group and the changing plans for the German battery cell plant. We were able to clear up a few rumors back then. And also in the current episode some things are straightened out.
Farasis as joint venture partner for Turkish automobile manufacturer TOGG
It is currently planned, in a first step, to manufacture the battery modules with cells from China, before the cells are then manufactured in Turkey in a second step, thus laying the foundation for increasing capacity. Not only for TOGG, but also for other manufacturers who want to source their batteries from the 50:50 joint venture between the companies. It can be used in the following sectors: passenger cars, commercial vehicles and stationary energy storage.
“Race of Range“: The combination of energy density and charging capacity makes the difference
The development of Farasis is also concentrated on these three divisions. There are definitely differences in the respective approaches. The focus is on the passenger car sector, in which a “race of range” has broken out, as Dr. Bergold gives to understand. Among them is the “race” to the battery with 1.000 km range to understand. From the point of view of him and Farasis, however, one should not only look at the range, but also keep an eye on the charging capacity. He shows why only the combination of energy density (same size/more energy) and increased charging power can work for Farasis.
According to the company, battery cells with an energy density of more than 330 Wh/kg have already been successfully tested. The company is thus on the way to increasing this value, which is important for e-mobility, by up to 50 percent by 2030 compared to the current state of the art. Farasis has been working on the development of innovative battery cells for two decades and is considered one of the technology leaders. The current Generation I achieves 285 Wh/kg in series production – more than any other manufacturer. The next series generation IV, which is expected from 2024, should then bring it to 330 Wh/kg. Before 350 Wh/kg are reached in 2026 with Generation IV+.
Cars, commercial vehicles and stationary storage – all with different battery requirements
In connection with the increase in energy density, the charging capacity should also increase at the same time, in order not only to start more powerful batteries, but also to be able to charge them accordingly. In the current episode, Dr. Bergold explained in detail. In addition to the passenger car sector, we also dealt with commercial vehicles. For this sector, Farasis also sees high added value in the battery-powered sector. First for short and medium-haul routes, before turning to long-distance transport. Here, however, the loading time is less important than the number of maximum cycles. Because commercial vehicles should be on the road for a correspondingly long time.
Battery size and weight play an even smaller role in the last segment – stationary energy storage. Instead, the cycles are coming back into focus. And also the costs, which have to be significantly lower here than in the passenger car and commercial vehicle segment in order to be able to convince on the market. But honestly, listen to the episode for yourself and learn a thing or two from Dr. Berggold. It is worth it.
You are also welcome to e-mail me with questions about e-mobility that concern you in everyday life. The answer to this may also be of interest to other listeners of the podcast. As always, about criticism, comments and Co. I’m happy of course. So feel free to contact us, also for the topic suggestions already mentioned. And of course I’m also very happy about a positive rating from the podcast provider of your choice! thank you.
