Fiat shortly with two new electric vans in the program-shortly

The car company Stellantis has announced two new electric commercial vehicles. These are new generations of a Fiat minivan and a light to medium-duty commercial vehicle from the Fiat Professional brand. The two new models will therefore be available with both a combustion engine and a battery-electric drive (BEV).

The light commercial vehicle from Fiat Professional will be available in three configurations: van, combi and cabin with platform. Both model ranges are based on the EMP2 platform, the modular nature of which allows for very different models and segments that meet the specific needs of different markets. Several other models are already being built on the same platform, such as Peugeot Expert and Traveller, Citroën Jumpy and SpaceTourer as well as Opel/Vauxhall Vivaro and Zafira Life.

Stellantis has not yet given any technical data. However, since some e-vehicles based on the EMP2 platform are already available, they can be easily derived. These have a 100 kW (136 hp) drive, which can be optionally combined with a 50 kWh or 75 kWh battery, depending on the vehicle length. The range with the small battery is around 220 kilometers in the WLTP standard, with the large battery a good 330 kilometers are possible. It would be a surprise if the Fiat vehicles were offered in other configurations.

According to Stellantis, the vehicles will soon go into production at the historic plant in Hordain near Valenciennes in northern France. The two Italian brands Fiat and Fiat Professional return with the new models to the French site that has already produced some of their most famous vehicles: the Fiat Ulysse MPV between 1994 and 2002 and the Fiat Professional Scudo from 1996 to 2016. Opened in 1992 as part of the historic joint venture between the then Fiat and PSA groups, the industrial complex is intended to be the cradle of the two new Fiat and Fiat Professional models, designed to meet the challenges of the new, increasingly sustainable urban mobility.

A zero-emission solution for large families, recreational vehicles, shuttle fleets, business customers and outfitters

With their names Fiat Ulysse and Fiat Professional Scudo, the two new models are based on the success of their predecessors. They are intended to expand the product range of the Turin brands and offer a locally emission-free solution for large families, leisure vehicles, shuttle fleets, business customers and outfitters. Stellantis describes the new vehicle generation from Fiat and Fiat Professional as an answer to the transition to locally emission-free mobility. In particular, the increasing use of light commercial vehicles in urban areas – partly due to the increasing demand for online delivery services – will make these vehicles an important contribution to reducing emissions in cities.

The Fiat Professional Scudo should be available to order in the most important markets between the end of this year and the beginning of next year, and the Fiat Ulysse from the first quarter of 2022.

Stellantis plays a key role with its leading commercial vehicle market position in Europe and its intention to become a global leader in electric commercial vehicles. The group is pursuing a comprehensive electrification strategy to provide its well-known brands with “exciting, state-of-the-art vehicles”. To do this, it uses both in-house know-how and partnerships/joint ventures to develop advanced technologies at affordable prices. Over the next three years, the electrification of commercial vehicles should be extended to all products and regions, including the range of vans with hydrogen fuel cells until the end of 2021.

By 2030, Stellantis expects low-emission vehicles to account for more than 70 percent of its sales in Europe and more than 40 percent in the United States. Stellantis plans to invest more than 30 billion euros in electrification and software development by 2025.

  1. A platform that allows both combustion engines and BEVs is always a very problematic compromise.
The vehicles are not optimally designed and are too expensive to produce – so they are less competitive in every respect.
The argument that both drive types can be produced on the same plant is not viable, since combustion engines will be phased out in the medium term anyway and – as Skoda is demonstrating with Octavia+Enyaq – completely different types can also run on the same assembly lines.

If the Fiat project is to be competition for the Buzz by VW, then that can not be much and VW can rest for a long time on his offer.
