The way a cloud works can best be compared to a classic data cloud, where you can save photos, videos and other files. If your own hard drive is full, you simply push your data into the online memory and can call it up there at any time. A current cloud works in the same way, only that electricity is pushed into the cloud that can be called up later. For example, you can feed excess electricity into the cloud over the summer and, if you do not produce enough, get it back in winter. At the end of the year you will count on your cloud provider. If you have used less a year than you have fed in, you earn it – in the form of a credit or a payment. On the other hand, if you have used more, you pay the additional electricity consumed. A current cloud is therefore a realistic way to store enough electricity for dry spells.

Of course, you can simply feed your electricity into the power grid without a cloud. For this, according to the Renewable Energy Act, they are paid by their local electricity network operator. However, since the fixed remuneration has continued to drop in recent years, they now achieve better sales prices through the cloud. However, if you have to buy electricity from the cloud, you usually pay more than with a classic electricity tariff. Therefore, you should calculate well beforehand whether your system can produce sufficient electricity.

Advantages and disadvantages of the electricity cloud

But not only the power fed in use them profitably, the electricity storage also becomes increasingly valuable in the future. Similar to electric cars that can be used as a mobile memory and therefore loaded with cheaper flowering of cars, the fluctuations in the power grid, which are connected via the cloud, can compensate. Since this is particularly important for unpredictable events, the remuneration is accordingly very good.

But even if the principle sounds against the large energy companies after a struggle of many small solar system owners, the cloud providers are also companies that want to achieve winners. Therefore, they usually charge a monthly fee, which also includes the rent for the electricity meter.

They often offer their cloud together with a PV system and a power memory. That sounds practical at first. However, you cannot use cheaper systems that the free market offers you. In addition, such a system is difficult to retrofit if it is used on a matter of more electricity-classic example is the purchase of an electric car.

The most important providers at an overview

Senec

Senec is a German provider who under the name Senec.Cloud offers a cloud service. However, this is currently only possible in combination with a stationary power storage in the house, which must also be from Senec. This limits the model choice, but at least Senec covers a large spectrum of storage capacity. Models with 2.5 kWh of up to 10 kWh can be put in your basement and these can also be combined into larger storage.

How much you pay for the cloud depends on your solar system, your annual consumption and the size of your electricity storage. The cheapest tariff begins at 21.95 euros a month and includes a return of 1000 kWh – the maximum amount of electricity that you can pull out of the cloud. If you need more, Senec calculates every further kilowatt hour with 27 cents. A fair price because the company is completely based on eco-stream of renewable sources such as wind turbines, photovoltaics, biomass or hydropower. However, if they consume less, Senec pays them the difference after the annual statement.

The tariffs then emerge up to 10.000 kWh for 116.95 euros, whereby this amount of electricity for private households would be a lot with an e-car. An example: a typical 4-person household with an annual consumption of 4.000 kWh, a normal -sized solar system with an output of 5 kWp and a medium memory of 5 kWh then pays 28.95 euros and receives a return quantity of 1.500 kW a year. You don’t have to be a solar system owner yourself to be able to join the community. As with any other provider, you can use the sunstream tariff (display) and also 26 cents/kWh from the age of 26. Only a basic fee of 9.99 euros a month. They then do not obtain their electricity from energy companies, but directly from the community. Polar star

The eco -electricity provider Polarstern (display) also offers a concept similar to a cloud. Here you can really complete the tariff in your own current (display) without having to cede a monthly basic fee. To do this, however, they must be the owner of a solar system and a power memory. If your energy produced is not enough, it provides polar stars.

The big difference to the cloud, however, is that the current electricity is not produced by other solar system operators, but by German hydropower plants. It is therefore actually a normal electricity tariff – only without a basic fee and can be canceled monthly. You also pay a monthly discount. This depends on your expected electricity consumption, which you cannot cover through your own solar system.

However, the price for one kilowatt hour is expensive. You then have to pay around 34 cents, which is when buying 1.000 kWh are already 28 euros a month. The big advantage, on the other hand, is: the freedom of the hardware. Because they are not bound to a manufacturer and can freely choose from the currently available solar panels and electricity storage. This tariff is also interesting for owners of older models.

The electricity and gas provider Yello also rents photovoltaic systems. With the Yello Solar Smart (advertisement), homeowners can generate electricity and save them from 174 euros a month. There is a tailor -made solar system and a power memory for rent, which are individually tailored to the conditions of the roof and personal energy needs – including advice, installation and protection. On your website you also offer the Yello Solar package with a cloud (advertisement) from 174 euros. Here, too, the solar system plus electricity storage and the offer suggests that it can still be used to use a current cloud. However, you cannot get the eponymous cloud from Yello. The company only points out that the systems can be combined with the SENEC cloud service and that they are a cloud tariff there separately have to complete – provided that a Senec power storage was installed for you. The "offer" is therefore only interesting for those who absolutely want to rent a solar system with memory at Yello, but do not want to do without a cloud. What is the difference between a current cloud and a solar cloud?

When you speak of Solar-Cloud, you actually mean a current cloud. Because the cloud can store both solar energy and other such as wind energy. Therefore, the more general concept of the electricity cloud is more sensible, because it is about the current and not about the sun. Nevertheless, some providers advertise with a solar cloud because they usually sell the right solar system.

In addition, an Austrian company is called "Solarcloud". But they have nothing to do with the concept of a current cloud. They sell solar panels to European customers and set them up in Australia. The customer will then receive the profit from the electricity sale there.

I need my own power memory?

In itself, a current cloud is also possible without its own memory. For example, you can obtain electricity from the cloud with the provider (display) without having your own solar system with memory. But the concept of a cloud only works properly if many customers have small storage options that together result in a huge virtual power plant.

What does a current cloud cost?

That fluctuates between the providers. In our research there was a range between 26 and 34 cents per kilowatt hour, whereby all providers only used eco-electricity. However, these are only calculated if you have used more electricity than produced at the end of the year. For comparison: in Germany one kilowatt hour costs an average of 30 cents.

Some providers also require a monthly fee. This is calculated from your own storage capacity, the size of the solar system and your own power consumption and fluctuates accordingly. Between 20 and 180 euros are possible, whereby the upper end should only reach companies whose electricity consumption is correspondingly high.

A current cloud is useful?

From a financial point of view, the answer depends on how large your own solar system and your own consumption is. The weather can also thwart you and make sure that you ultimately use more electricity than you produced. Depending on the tariff, you must then pay as with a classic current billing. In addition, many providers require a basic fee. But the fact is that the feed -in tariff has continued to drop in recent years. Selling electricity directly to the network operator is now not as lucrative as to be concluded in a current cloud. The bottom line is that you have to calculate this with regard to the size of your solar system- i.e. compare the investment, operating and maintenance costs with the winning options. For many plant owners, however, this can be worthwhile.

Also ideally speaking, one cannot make a clear judgment. Although they can make themselves more independent of large electricity groups, they enter a contractual relationship with the cloud operator. They also remain on the public power grid.
