Intelligent interior mirror: for a better overview: cameras instead of ordinary rear views

With the backwards, it is not the best order in many cars. The car manufacturers have preferred for many years with reversing cameras that projected their picture onto the navigation screens. But more and more vehicles are now available with a digital interior mirror.

The invention of bringing the image of the reversing camera into the interior mirror is not entirely new. Around ten years ago, the interior mirror in one or the other Asian car was far more than a reflective glass pane that could be darkened manually or at best at best in the event of light. The right part of the inner mirror was shone by a small display.

If the reverse gear was inserted and the reversing camera was activated, appeared like out of nowhere in the right part of the rearplace a small camera image from the area behind the vehicle. The reason for the unusual position of the projection surface was easily found. Many vehicles did not yet have a navigation system with a corresponding screen and so you had to look for another area where you could transfer the image of the camera.

From the mirror to the display

In the meantime, the technology continues and most vehicles have at least one screen in the middle of the dashboard, to which the image of the reversing camera or the other photo lenses can be easily transferred. However, the rearview mirror is now becoming a separate display for some vehicles. The reason is the poor all -round view of many vehicles. No matter whether van, coupe, crossover or sedan-most vehicles from the B-pillar are no longer clear. This disturbs especially when maneuvering in more or less tight parking spaces and especially in the evening when the reversing lights mostly illuminate the area behind the car very inadequate.

Outside mirrors often already digital

In the USA and Asia there are already a number of vehicles in which the interior mirror is far more than just a pure rear view mirror. On the underside, you can usually change via a switch whether you want to see a normal reflection or the digital image. However, your own eyes have to get used to the digital image as well as that of the digital exterior mirrors, as it offers Honda, Audi E-Ttron or the VW XL-1. Cadillac introduced such a system in its luxury model CT6 and, if desired. So you can see a camera image when looking at the mirror and not just one when it comes to parking. Then the camera image also switches on on the large navigation screen.

Camera on the roof

In Europe, the Range Rover Evoque was one of the first models with future -oriented technology. However, the Brit goes a little further, because the camera for the consideration back is in the foot of the antenna, which is located on the roof. This makes the lens much less dirty and has a larger panorama. You have a significantly larger angle and the view to the rear is not only restricted by the C-pillars, the rear headrests or an already small rear window. If you insert the reverse gear with the automatic transmission of the Range Rover Evoque, there is a second picture in the navigation display.

However, the technology is not only particularly interesting for cars, because vans in particular often have no rear windows or the view to the rear is excluded by partition walls. So far, the drivers have therefore been dependent on the exterior mirrors or, like private users, have used the reversing camera. For manufacturers such as Ford, there is now a digital interior for models such as the Transit. The system looks like a conventional rearview mirror – but is actually a high -resolution screen that enables a panoramic view of the rear road traffic. This helps the driver, pedestrians and cyclists to recognize cars and other road users who are behind their own commercial vehicle in good time – even if a partition or windowless tail doors block the direct view backwards.

The interior mirror with full screen display transmits images of a camera that is located on the back of the vehicle and has an automatic brightness control for the display display during day and night. The system offers a double field of vision as a conventional rear view mirror. In normal mirror mode, as with a conventional interior mirror, the driver can see the rear seats and any occupants. While some companies offer this solely when ordering the new vehicle, the digital screen and camera must also be retrofitted at Ford later – at prices from 683 euros.

Digital video recorder in the mirror

The technology at Gentex goes even further. The Americans have now introduced a new digital video recorder integrated in the rear -view mirror for the work -side installation. As a roof or action cam, the rear view mirror primarily takes up the area in front of the vehicle. In this way, road scenes, accidents, vandalism and other events can be recorded in road traffic. The system is scalable, which makes it possible to absorb sequences forward, to the rear and even from the interior. There are also additional functions such as Bluetooth, WLAN, an integrated crash sensor and the possibility of audio absorption. The video data can be downloaded using the integrated SD card or via app for mobile devices. The digital data recorder is integrated into the digital mirror platform of Gentex and is part of the intelligent Full display Mirror, which already has a backward camera and a video display integrated in the mirror.

  1. Yawn. old hat!
For 10 years I have had this in my vehicles, retrofitting for less than 100 euros. Of the … Screen backing mirrors replace the standard rearview mirror and, if requested. The installation is simple and is incl. Return camera in an hour. In addition, the consideration is also recorded, which means that you can capture the crowds by securing the 3-minute recording with a pressure on the display before overwriting.

  2. This technology with built -in….
Dashcam function would be awesome. In the event of accidents, one would no longer be on subjective witnesses and possibly. False statements instructed. And you could do without the large exterior mirrors. Also so -called. Autobumser could then be converted much easier.

  3. The best
You would have an overview if you would build cars again with more glass. Not always just design shops but practical cars. Then you would need all this nonsense with a lot of electronics that a pig net costs if something doesn’t work. Would you be worth the approach or? I recently bought a new mirror glass. 10 €, installation in 2 minutes. With such camera systems, it is easy 1000 €.
