Honecker went hunting in this Range Rover
1 of 7
This vehicle was once a normal Range Rover with 3.5 liters displacement and 132 hp. Erich Honecker had it bought in West Berlin in 1985 for 69,000 DM. There he also registered the car…Convert m convertible for around 295,000 DM.

Nothing has been changed on the SUV either. The paintwork, the interior – everything is original.

Inside it looks like grandpa’s good room. An eight-cylinder from Range Rover with a Rolls-Royce top was also part of Erich Honecker’s fleet. The renovation cost a fortune.
D.he hunt was his great passion. Erich Honecker went on the prowl several times a week. He had hunting lodges in the Schorfheide on the Werbellinsee and on the Drewitzer See. His state limousines from Citroen and Volvo would have been clearly overwhelmed with the hunter-gathering excursions into the forests of the workers ‘and peasants’ state.
There were appropriate offers from the class enemy for this. The first of four green Range Rover SUVs was ordered in the early 1980s and extensively modified to meet Honecker’s needs. Because the quality of the first version, which was still being processed in England, was not convincing, the Berlin coachbuilder Rometsch was later commissioned to refine it.
The range rovers, which are suitable for forests and meadows, cost between 200,000 and 400,000 Deutschmarks in the end. One of these rarities is in Wenzel Nowak’s garage in Berlin – and for sale. Rometsch had lengthened the Range Rover, which was still produced with two doors in the early years, by half a meter and fitted it with the roof of a Rolls-Royce Corniche.

In addition, there were various hunting-specific accessories such as ramming bars, cable winches, thick searchlights and a height-adjustable rifle rest for the former President of the GDR’s Council of State. All expensive one-offs that drove up the price. For one of these expensive Range Rovers, Honecker could have had five to six Porsche 911s put in front of the door.

Used car dealer Nowak is asking for 175,000 euros for the first of the three Rometsch conversions. "I got it over 20 years ago with 6500 km and now it has 8800 km on the clock," says Nowak. But there are the original papers that identify the car as a classic for next year.
The green forest man has been for sale for a number of years. Only the right prospect has not yet come. "There was already an Arab sheikh who wanted him for the falcon hunt, some Russians, but I’m only giving him to a suitable successor in Germany or England," reveals Nowak.

According to his own statement, the 78-year-old Nowak is in no hurry. Honecker’s Range Rover is also not an SUV to show off. The green varnish looks simple. The interior is in perfect harmony with the old cliches of Honecker‘s rather petty-bourgeois lifestyle.
The plastic fittings in the style of the 80s, the rubber mats on the fluffy carpeting and the lambskin covers in the fund look more like grandpa’s living room than a salon of the noble gentry. Even if a 3.5 liter eight-cylinder is working under the hood, with the 132 hp and the massive weight of well over two tons, at best a sedate driving style is to be expected.
But more was never necessary in the forests of Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The socialist service personnel ensured that the deer also reliably got under the gun.
