Ford announces huge investments in new plants to manufacture electric cars and batteries. On a site called Blue Oval City in Stanton (Tennessee), electrically powered pick-ups are to be built – namely next-generation F models. Batteries are also to be manufactured in Stanton.

In addition, in cooperation with the battery manufacturer SK Innovation two new plants are built in Glendale, Kentucky, to build batteries for "a new line of Ford and Lincoln electric cars". The three new battery plants (two in Kentucky and one in Tennessee) should make it possible to build batteries with a storage capacity of 129 gigawatt hours every year.

Ford and SK Innovation intend to invest a total of 11.4 billion dollars (around 10 billion euros). Of this, $ 7 billion will come from Ford. This means that Ford is spending about a quarter of its planned electric car investments of $ 30 billion by 2025 on the new plants. Almost 11,000 new jobs are expected to be created, around 6,000 of them in Stanton and 5,000 in Glendale. Production of the new electric cars and batteries is slated to begin in 2025.

Blue Oval City in Stanton (Tennessee): E-car production and a battery plant for 43 GWh

In Stanton, about $ 5.6 billion is to be invested in the Blue Oval City. In addition to the plant for F-series pick-ups, it will also include a battery plant for the new BlueOvalSK joint venture built. The mega-campus is intended to use locally available renewable energy sources such as geothermal, solar and wind power.

BlueOvalSK Battery Park in Kentucky (rendering): Two 43 GWh battery plants

In Glendale, $ 5.8 billion will be invested in a BlueOvalSK Battery Park. The batteries, which are built there in two plants together with SK Innovation, are to supply the North American Ford plants with batteries for the next generation of electric vehicles from Ford and Lincoln. Each plant should produce 43 GWh, so a total of 86 GWh. The remaining 43 GWh battery capacity will consequently be built in Stanton.

Ford recently announced, expand the production capacity of the Ford Rouge Electric Vehicle Vehicle Center in Dearborn (near Detroit). The F-150 Lightning will be there soon which will hit the US market in spring 2022. Its successor will then be built in the new plant in Tennessee.

Ford expects that by 2030 around 40 to 50 percent of its global sales will be purely electric cars.
