But the thermal management leaves a lot to be desired, according to our tester Tom Moloughney
The Ford Mustang Mach-E GT has been on the market in Germany since spring 2021; The top version GT followed in the summer. Tom Molougney from State of Charge and site has now tested the car.
While the previous versions of the Mustang Mach-E have a "grill" in the same color as the car, the cover on the GT is black and has a carbonized gray grill. GT lettering is emblazoned in the middle of the tailgate. In addition, the GT has 20-inchers as standard, which are equipped with Brembo brakes at the front. Inside, the GT has sports seats with more lateral support.
With the GT there are now five variants of the Mustang Mach-E:
|Net battery / WLTP range||Performance / 0-100 km / h||price|
|Mustang Mach-E SR||68 kWh / 440 km||198 kW / 6.9 sec.||47,500 euros|
|Mustang Mach-E ER||88 kWh / 610 km||216 kW / 7.0 sec.||54,750 euros|
|Mustang Mach-E AWD SR||68 kWh / 400 km||198 kW / 6.3 sec.||54,750 euros|
|Mustang Mach-E AWD ER||88 kWh / 540 km||258 kW / 5.8 sec.||63,700 euros|
|Mustang Mach-E ER AWD GT||88 kWh / 500 km||358 kW / 4.4 sec.||72,900 euros|
The GT version accelerates to 100 in 4.4 seconds and, according to Tom Moloughney, pushes you significantly more into the seats than the normal ER-AWD version, which takes 5.8 seconds. These are the values for the sprint from 0 to 100 km / h; with roll start it is 3.7 or 5.1 seconds. The torque is also significantly higher at 860 instead of 580 Nm.
In the USA, as noted by Moloughney, there are two new versions: GT and GT Performance. Like the normal GT, the performance version has a maximum output of 358 kW, but with 860 instead of 813 Nm more torque. Since the German version has 860 Nm, only the higher-torque version is apparently offered in Germany, although it is not called performance. In any case, the torque of the weaker variant is only regulated down by software, according to the test driver.
The rear electric motor is the same as on the normal Mustang Mach-E. The front engine, on the other hand, is more powerful, says Tom in the video. In addition, there is an improved power output of the battery, says Ford expert Leeway Ho in the video. According to Tom, the steering is more direct. The German GT version has adaptive MagneRide dampers, as they are known from the combustion Mustang GT. With these, the strength of the damping is adjustable. For this purpose, a hydraulic fluid is used, the viscosity of which can be controlled by a magnetic field (magnetorheological fluid).
Tom drove both the American GT version without the MagneRide dampers and the American performance version with the adjustable dampers, and he says the difference is clearly noticeable. This means that the SUV drives practically like a sports car, says Tom.
Compared to the normal Mustang Mach-E, the GT is lower. The ground clearance here is at least 1.7 centimeters lower at 130 instead of 147 mm. In addition, the body height is three centimeters lower. Overall, the center of gravity was lowered, which leads to better handling.
Another innovation is the Unbridled Extend mode. Even if the name of this "unbridled expansion mode" suggests, the Mach-E GT will not be faster, but slower: The peak power is limited in order to protect the battery, motors and power electronics from overheating. Unlike the normal Mach-E versions, the GT does not have to switch to a mode with reduced power.
But even in this gentle mode, Tom only managed two laps on the handling course with the Mach-E GT before the car lost power. Ford has to keep working on heat management, Tom thinks, otherwise it will not meet the expectations that one has for a car for the racetrack.

Two batteries are offered in the Mustang Mach-E; According to the German price list, they have the following storage capacities:
- 76 kWh gross / 68 kWh net (standard range), range of up to 440 km
- 99 kWh gross / 88 kWh net (Extended Range), range of up to 610 km
Tom explains, however, that Ford wants to increase the usable battery capacity via an over-the-air software update. For example, the 99 kWh gross extended range battery is to be drilled up from the previous 88 kWh net to 91 kWh net. That is only 3 percent more, but that could lead to about 15 km more range.
Another improvement concerns the DC charging curve. As reported, the charging power suddenly drops to a maximum of 150 kW at 80 percent SoC and is then only about 11 kW. It takes up to an hour to go from 80 to 100 percent. According to Ford, the heavy drop will only happen at 90 percent SoC in the future.
