The Ford configurator has misled us (correction)
We have to correct ourselves: The "promotional discount" that Ford lists for the Mustang Mach-E in its configurator is actually only the manufacturer's share of the environmental bonus. We would like to thank our reader Lukas S., to whom we owe this knowledge.
For years now, Ford has been offering juicy discounts on combustion models, which you don't have to haggle over at the dealer, but which appear in the official configurator. The brand seems to be taking the same approach with its first serious electric car: the still quite new Mustang Mach-E.
The car has only been on sale in Germany since spring 2021. The list prices start at 47,500 euros, but in the configurator there is the "recommended promotional price" of 43,930 euros right next to it. That's 3,570 euros less. Only when you click on the corresponding text does it become clear: It's just the manufacturer's share of the environmental bonus. You can call that misleading – at least the deception worked for us.
The Mach-E is available in five versions. These include two rear-wheel drive vehicles with slightly different performance but mainly with different batteries, where we have abbreviated Extended Range as ER, the smaller standard range battery appears as SR. The same applies to the all-wheel drive, while it is the top version GT only with the large battery.
In the following table we have listed list and promotional prices as well as the difference:
Battery gross / range | List price | "Promotional price" | difference | |
Mustang Mach-E SR | 76 kWh / 440 km | 47,500 euros | 43,930 euros | 3,570 euros |
Mustang Mach-E ER | 99 kWh / 610 km | 54,750 euros | 51,775 euros | 2,975 euros |
Mustang Mach-E AWD SR | 76 kWh / 400 km | 54,750 euros | 51,775 euros | 2,975 euros |
Mustang Mach-E AWD ER | 99 kWh / 540 km | 63,700 euros | 60,725 euros | 2,975 euros |
Mustang Mach-E ER AWD GT | 99 kWh / 500 km | 72,900 euros | 69,925 euros | 2,975 euros |
Only the basic variant qualifies for the maximum environmental bonus, so this is where the difference is greatest.
According to statistics from the Federal Motor Transport Authority, 1,639 Mach-E vehicles were registered in Germany by the end of September. The first Mach-E approvals were given in April. The Mach-E, which is not exactly cheap for a volume brand, is not a big hit. But even comparably expensive cars with combustion engines did not do much better: 1,192 units of the combustion Mustang were registered in the first nine months, and 1,226 units of the large Explorer pick-up. The best-selling Ford in the first nine months was the Kuga with almost 22,000 units.
