The four-door Coupe CLS is considered the most beautiful Mercedes. Now he’s also strong as a bear. And can make sports car drivers work up a sweat.
S.o The employees from Affalterbach have rarely been quick: no sooner has Mercedes brought the new CLS onto the market than AMG is already sending the reinforced version of the elegant four-door into the race. More beautiful than a BMW M6 and more powerful than a Porsche Panamera Turbo, it will go on sale in March from 115,846 euros.
For a price that is almost twice as high as the entry-level CLS 250 CDI, AMG is turning the four-door into a sports car. In contrast to its competitors, however, it also offers more space.
The new V8 engine, which AMG is already installing in the S-Class and CL, ensures the increase in performance. The eight-cylinder now only has 5.5 liters instead of 6.2 liters, but it has 525 hp and a proud 700 Newton meters of torque. This means that it has more power than the BMW M6, which has just expired, and comes close to the turbo version of the Porsche Panamera.
If you don’t want to be satisfied with second place in the speeder ranking, you can get the CLS with a “performance package” right from the start. That costs just under 8,000 euros, but in addition to the optical fine-tuning, it also brings a further 32 hp and 100 Nm, so that the athlete from Stuttgart still beats the one from Zuffenhausen.
During the first test drive, the engine proves to be an almost insidious charmer: It grumbles more than it roars, goes to work powerfully but cultivated and lulls the driver into the deceptive security that he doesn’t have to worry about his driver’s license.
But woe betide you step a little more courageously on the accelerator or choose the one "Drive unit" the sports program on the center console. Then all you can hear is an angry rumble under the hood, instinctively grabs the steering wheel a little tighter, fixes your gaze on the horizon and lets you shoot ahead like a rocket.
The CLS 63 AMG sprint to 100 km / h in 4.4 and with the performance package even in 4.3 seconds. And of course the speed limit of 250 km / h is purely a matter of form: For a surcharge and after attending a driver training course, AMG lets it loose a little and therefore allows customers to run freely up to 300 km / h.
But AMG not only looks at the stop meter, but increasingly at the fuel meter. Not that customers couldn’t afford an express surcharge and would seriously study the data sheet. But in Affalternach, CO2 emissions were discovered as an important hygiene factor and a strict diet was therefore imposed on the models.
Measured against the figures from 2008, AMG will reduce its fleet consumption by 30 percent, promises company boss Ola Kallenius: "And by 2015 we will go down another 20 percent." With a consumption of 9.9 liters and CO2 emissions of 231 g / km, the CLS is setting a good example. Compared to its predecessor, it consumes 32 percent less than its predecessor.
Of course, just the engine is not enough. So that the power comes cleanly on the road, there is a dedicated AMG transmission and a more tightly tuned sports suspension. In addition, high earners in a hurry can also order a ceramic brake. The standard CLS already includes the LED headlights, which are only available as options, and a dozen new assistance systems from the drowsiness monitor to a warning system when leaving the lane.
The design has been moved a little in the direction of the SLS with new aprons and sills. The bonnet is more contoured, the flared fenders fill massive 19-inch rims, and the inside feels like you’re in a sports studio. But where others sit in carbon and sweat, you race with the Coupe in velvet and silk. Nevertheless, AMG has of course also processed a few carbon fibers.
The doors are made of aluminum for lightweight construction, but the engine cover and the small rear spoiler, for example, are made of carbon. And if you want to do even more show, the best thing to do is order the "Edition1", which comes with a matt gray camouflage paint, among other things. In the speed trap, that doesn’t help either.
The fact that AMG is introducing the CLS so quickly after the production model is due to a tightly packed program. Because AMG has planned to present so many new products this year that planning is difficult. After all, there will soon be the new SLK, a thoroughly revised C-Class including a new coupe, and the next generation of the M-Class will be launched in the summer. The highlight is the IAA in Frankfurt in autumn. At Mercedes everything revolves around the SLS Roadster.
