The TNGA – that’s it …for "Toyota New Global Architecture" – offers a lower vehicle center of gravity and thus enables better handling and more driving stability.

Toyota has launched the fourth generation of the Prius. It is more economical, even if no leap forward has been made in terms of technology. The design takes as much getting used to as the very first Prius.
M.he data sheets and measuring instruments are not allowed to come to Kojo Toyoshima this time. Toyoshima is the chief engineer in product planning at Toyota, and when he asks us to take the first short test drive with the new Prius shortly before the market launch in December in Japan and in the spring, he finds it a bit difficult with hard numbers and sober facts.
Because although the fourth generation of the hybrid pioneer, which will probably start with us around 30,000 euros, has a very progressive appearance with its sleeker (but not necessarily more beautiful) design and the flatter roof.
However, the new Prius certainly does not correspond to the common beauty ideal of a car. Appearing much more modern inside with lots of white plastics in Apple style and colorful displays, the car looks damn close to its predecessor in the theory of test benches and measured values.
No wonder if the so-called hybrid synergy drive with a 98 hp 1.8-liter gasoline engine and an electric motor now only with 72 hp on the continuously variable automatic transmission basically doesn’t change, and even the antiquated one for the export models Nickel-metal hybrid technology of the battery is adopted.

The fact that Toyoshima still smiles winningly is not only due to the 18 years of experience that Toyota now has with hybrid technology, the almost ten million part-time electric vehicles in now 30 model series that were built during this time, and the more than three million Prius drivers that the chief engineer knows behind him. The main reason is that, despite the supposedly old technology, number IV actually offers a new driving experience.
"In doing so, we primarily took the European requirements to heart and worked on the drive culture," says one of the engine developers. Therefore, the Prius is not only better insulated, so that the asthmatic four-cylinder can no longer act so cheeky, above all, the Japanese have improved the response and optimized the stepless automatic.
In 10.5 seconds to 100 km
It no longer lets the engine run for so excruciatingly long during the sprint, shifts faster and earlier and thus makes a major contribution to ensuring that Europeans will also feel comfortable in the Prius in the future. Only the basic data of around 10.5 seconds for the sprint from zero to 100 km / h and the electronic limit at 180 km / h will probably not change anything for the time being.
Another thing that helps reduce reservations about the hybrid bestseller is the new design of the car. The dimensions remain almost unchanged and the six centimeters longer are mainly due to crash safety, so that you sit just as well or badly inside as before and only the trunk grows by ten percent to 502 liters because the hybrid battery is now under the back seat moves.

But with the change to a new, global platform in the style of the modular transverse matrix from Volkswagen, you can now sit six centimeters lower in the Prius than before. Together with a lower center of gravity, a new steering system and a new rear axle, this creates a much closer connection between the driver, the vehicle and the road, and makes the Prius seem less arbitrary for a long time.
That is still not enough for driving pleasure, even if company boss Akio Toyoda conjures up the wow factor at every opportunity that all new Toyotas should now have. But where you could only drive the Prius out of conviction or a bad conscience, it has now become an inconspicuous compact car in every sense that you can no longer buy just because of its drive system.
Toyota also supports this argument with a whole bunch of new technologies that are somehow puzzled into the equipment and option list – from the LED headlights to the distance radar with emergency braking function and pedestrian detection to the head-up display. The only thing the Japanese still haven’t taken out of service is the dusty foot-operated parking brake.
Toyota has great hopes for the Mirai
Incidentally, it is also the case that Chief Engineer Toyoshima and his colleagues have also turned something on the engine. Because even if the fine-tuning looks a bit pale, even if you have been asking in vain for an affordable plug-in variant in significant numbers and even if the lithium-ion cells available at Toyota are initially only intended for Japan – then Toyoshima can at least shine with an impressive number.
“We have increased the efficiency of the entire system by 15 percent.” Nevertheless, he does not want to commit to exact consumption values. But instead of the previous 3.9 liters, the data sheet should now have 3.3 liters in the future.
"We have set new standards for consumption, emissions and efficiency in every generation," says Toyoshima with great self-confidence: "But the progress has never been as great as with our latest model."

There is, for example, a completely new one, only… 1.2 liter gasoline engine that wants to shine with 116 hp and an average consumption of 4.7 liters / 100 kilometers. Or the 1.6-liter diesel with 112 hp (4.3 liters) from BMW. Even if Toyota did not invent the hybrid drive, the Japanese made it big and impressively demonstrate their market power to the competition – even if they focus on quantity instead of quality. But the lead is melting, and the new generation of the model saver also looks dangerously old compared to the many plug-in hybrids of the past few months.
But Toyota management is apparently not giving any serious thought to that. First of all, they follow the law of large numbers and will already have their 30,000 cars sold a month. And secondly, they are basically already a step further and use all their energy and apparently most of the money to establish the fuel cell in the Mirai.
The fact that the competition can only laugh heartily at this leaves them completely cold. "Because if we’ve learned one thing in Prius 20 years, it’s this," says Chairman Takechi Uchiyamada: "He who laughs last, laughs best."
