Fraunhofer starts building the

Power storage have a key meaning for all economic sectors involved in the energy and mobility transaction. The “Research Production Battery Cell” in Munster is to become a battery cell production center as a battery composition factory for all of Germany to close the existing gap in the value chain of batteries and batteries and to avoid dependence on other markets. The project team of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft and the research partners in North Rhine-Westphalia are now starting to implement the concept for a “research manufacturer battery cell” at the Munster site.

The battery research in Germany has achieved an international top level over the last ten years. Nevertheless, the German industry was previously compiled with regard to an entry into the mass production of battery cells so far. In order to reduce technological hurdles and investment risks for companies, the “Research Production Battery Cell” should include knowledge gaps and lead to complete competence along the value chain from manufacturing to recycling of battery cells.

It relies on the expertise of the site partners of the University of Munster, the Helmholtz Institute Munster, the RWTH Aachen and various institutes from Fraunhofer allies materials, production, microelectronics and information and communication technology. The production of modern, high-performance storage is addressed not only for electromobility, but also for applications in household, industry, logistics, energy industry, chemistry, machine and plant construction or robotics.

Shoulder at national level

For the construction and operation of such a large-scale project, the Fraunhofer company offers good conditions as an innovation driver. The first subproject request of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft to set up and commissioning a first production line with a funding volume of around 150 million euros has now been granted by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

“Battery technology has central importance as key technology for the research and business location Germany. The Federal Government wants to strengthen battery technology along the entire value chain. The research manufacturing battery cell is an important element in the support activities of the BMBF. With Munster is a superb location found that combines scientific expertise and a convincing concept. We are pleased that now the concrete implementation of this important project begins.”Prof. Wolf-Dieter Lukas, State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Education and Research

Economic and energy ministers Prof. Dr. Andreas Pinkwart explained the “Research Production Battery Cell” creates excellent conditions to develop modern memory for a variety of climate-friendly applications – in electricity networks, in electromobility, in robotics – and create new value chains for the industry.”Prof. Reimund Neugebauer, President of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, emphasized the importance of the project at national and European level: “Power stores have integral importance as key building blocks for the energy and mobility transition for central economic sectors at Germany. In addition, it is essential with regard to international competition, our independence from other markets to strengthen.”.

Battery composition factory for all Germany

The project team for buildingResearch Production Battery Cell”, the Commissioner Head of Prof. Dr. Jens Tubke from the Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology ICT and the Head of the Research Production Battery Cell, DR. Helmut Schmidt, take now in free of charge from the city of Munster in the immediate vicinity of the scientific institutes of the University of Munster the work. From February 2020, the scientists together with other employees will take care of the construction of the “Research Production Battery Cell” in the Hansa-Businespark in the south of the city. There, until 2022 on a plot of around 40,000 square meters, a unique battery composition factory for all Germany is created.

The research production battery cell is realized and operated by the Fraunhofer experts in cooperation with the teams of the Battery Research Center Meet of the University of Munster under the direction of the Battery Sorcher Prof. Dr. Martin Winter and the Chair Production Engineering of E-Mobility Components under the direction of the production management researcher Professional. Dr. Achim Kampker at the RWTH Aachen.

The Federal Ministry of Education and Research provides about 500 million euros for the project, while the state of North Rhine-Westphalia will support and operate research production with more than 200 million euros. The state government will acquire the property in Hansa Businespark from the Economic Development Munster and leave the Fraunhofer company free of charge.
