Driving fast is hardly possible on public roads. Why not take a private car to a racetrack? However, such full throttle drives are not an overdrive for your own car.

D.he track is clean, the asphalt grippy, and the next bend is easy to see. We are on a racetrack, you can rest here. Some circuits not only offer horsepower professionals a playground for their passion, but also laypeople with their everyday cars.

The race tracks in Germany that have their slopes open for so-called track days, tourist or public trips without time measurement include the Nurburgring, Hockenheimring, Sachsenring, Eurospeedway Lausitz, Heidbergring and the Spreewaldring. The Motopark Oschersleben, the Bilster Berg Drive Resort and the former Grob-Dolln Airport offer a similar program.

Private drivers without a racing license and racing cars can feel a bit like Rosberg, Vettel and Co. there. Opening times and prices can be found on the websites of the respective operators. For example, a lap on the legendary Nordschleife costs 27 euros.

In order for the filing of driving along the ideal line and better lap times to be as successful as possible, hobby pilots should, however, pay attention to a few things. "The car should generally be in good condition, because driving on racetracks is very stressful for a car," says Hans-Gerd Brauneiser from the Rhineland garage in Cologne.

Remove the hubcaps before driving

The mechanic with racing experience recommends checking all operating fluids such as oil and water before starting and topping them up to the maximum permitted level. The brake fluid should not be more than two years old to ensure the highest possible braking performance.

The tire pressure should be readjusted: “At the beginning of the journey, the tire pressure should have the value prescribed by the manufacturer. After a few laps, the pressure increases because of the warming, then you should let out some air, ”says Brauneiser.

It is better to remove hubcaps on steel rims: "Otherwise they like to fly off." Even if drivers are not obliged to do so, it is safer to drive with a hard hat.

Anyone who dares to take to the slopes in their everyday car has to pay more than the pure fees suggest. Because especially "when lap times increase and longer use on the track, various vehicle components come to their load limit and are exposed to greater wear," says racing mechanic Brauneiser. Above all, tires, braking systems and wheel-guiding parts of the chassis suffer on racetracks.

Skills are often misjudged

The best way to protect the engine, gearbox and brakes pilots is with a slow-down lap after a fast drive. This allows the cooling system, brakes and tires to cool down gently, says the expert.

When the trip is over, the tires are checked again. The tread depth and condition must still be right. In the event of severe damage, a replacement must be found. When the tires have cooled down, the prescribed air pressure is applied to the rubbers again.

Even if a car is in good technical condition, accidents can happen. The pilots are often cocky and misjudge their skills. Or they let themselves be carried away by other participants. Once the car is lying on the grass or gravel off the track, it can be expensive. Because not every insurance company automatically takes on the damage incurred.

“Participation in unauthorized races represents a breach of duty on the part of the policyholder. His insurance cover expires. Liability pays the damage to the uninvolved third party, but can take recourse against the driver for up to 5000 euros, "says Alina Schon from the Association of the German Insurance Industry (GDV).

And the comprehensive insurance generally does not cover damage that occurs during driving events "where the achievement of a maximum speed is important".

This does not include public rides. But if you land at high speed in the gravel bed or on the guardrail, you may have an argumentation problem with claims settlement. Alina Schon advises that you inquire about suitable insurance coverage with your insurance company in advance.

Would-be racing drivers do not learn how to drive safely and quickly by doing a few laps in public traffic on the racetrack. "Anyone who wants to move their vehicle not only quickly but also safely on a racetrack is in good hands with a driver training course," says Michael Kramp from the German Motor Sport Association (DMSB). For newbies, he recommends driver training, in which the basics for driving on the racetrack are taught and also explained.

The theoretical part with aspects of driving physics is followed by practical experience on an exclusively rented racetrack, often under the guidance of active racing drivers. In some cases, an examination can be taken with which the racing driver’s license can be applied for from the DMSB. This entitles the holder to participate in official races and championship runs. The road to becoming a professional racing driver is still a long one. But you’re already going in the right direction.
