The plant in Russelsheim is ready for the age of electromobility: The team at the Opel headquarters drives the extensive work for implementing the electrified EMP2 platform with high pressure. “Now the future of mobility is in our work in Russelsheim. This is an important step towards the future security of the site, “says Opel boss Michael Lohscheller.

Werkshleiter Michael Lewald complements that local employees have been “outstanding job” in the past few months to enable the development of the further developed EMP2 platform in this short time. “We are looking forward to the electrical future,” says the plant manager. Comprehensive work was carried out in all areas of the factory; For this, a significant million contribution was invested, as Opels Group Nuts Stellantis.

In the paint shop, for example, the two-color painting was built up and the so-called 3-wet process introduced, a particularly emission-saving painting process. In the bodyworks, the facilities for the new models in the building K180 have been built. Comprehensive changes also existed in the finished and final assembly, in which, among other things, a new wedding and a new chassis line were built up.

In addition, driverless transport systems are also used in the Russelsheim factory to ensure the smooth material delivery process efficiently. And all models produced in Russelsheim are tested on a completely new test track. The far-reaching innovations also include IT systems as well as the logistics processes.

The EMP2 (Efficient Modular) platform is a flexible and efficient multi-energy platform used for vehicles of the C and D segment. Thanks to their high modularity, paired with variable suspension parameters, many model variants are made possible and thus a great freedom in the brand differentiation.

Vehicles with conventional internal combustion engine and electrified vehicles can be produced on the same line thanks to the EMP2 platform, which brings an important level of flexibility in the current start-up phase of electromobility: production can react to the wishes of the customers at any time.

The new EMP2 platform enables the company to introduce a second production layer in Russelsheim. This is supposed to start in the fall and is an important step to lead the work into the future. Through the second layer, around 300 additional places will be created in the finished and final assembly this year, which are internally occupied with employees from the company’s areas that are not sufficiently utilized.

  3. It’s great that since Opel has a new owner consortium, these steps finally get started. Now comes the future!
Too long, Opel hung in the spell of the mobility transducer (VDA).
But more advanced is the fact that Opel wants to sell fuel cell vehicles.
This can only only Toyota at a reasonable price: Toyota Mirai !
Because e-mobility is only one of the current possibilities to make mobility future friendly.
In the future-friendly for us, our descendants and for a healthy life on an intact planet.
