Geneva feels like the capital of traffic jams. The company Rinspeed took this nuisance as an opportunity and developed a study for this year’s motor show. A revolution for city traffic.

D.he tarpaulin over its Geneva premiere for 2013 was lifted by the tuner Rinspeed at the end of last year. The spectacular standing car hidden underneath is now part of the mobility concept with which the Swiss want to cause a sensation at their home fair this time.

The box-shaped Micromax minibus with electric drive is barely longer than a Fiat 500, but offers space for four adults, a child and lots of luggage. The trick of the mini-mobile, which is only 3.60 meters long: the occupants do not sit with bent legs, but rather strap themselves to special standing seats.

In this way, they take up less interior space. To compensate, the vehicle height increases to an impressive 2.20 meters.

This makes the standing car unsuitable for long journeys. But that is not the aim at all; rather, Rinspeed has an eye on the use of car-sharing agencies and has therefore given the small bus a connection to the data cloud.

Micromax, the ideal car sharing car

So every Micromax should be able to couple with every other. Objective: to create a kind of swarm intelligence.

The idea is simple: although each Micromax functions as a private vehicle, the online connection also makes it the perfect car sharing car. Those who drive alone are happy about the maneuverability and low parking space requirement, but can easily invite up to three adult passengers who are looking for a means of transport via an app at any time.

A central computer takes over the scheduling of the vehicles, similar to a taxi control center. The Micromax searches for the right routes with the help of information from its automotive siblings. Traffic jams can be avoided in this way and each other is warned of danger spots.

Suggestions for the traffic of the future

An unspecified electric motor takes over the drive. Range and top speed are adapted for use in city traffic. As an alternative to transporting people, the Micromax could also be used as a taxi or delivery van with appropriate modifications.

The small bus will not initially be built in series. Like the other Geneva studies by Rinspeed, it is more of a visionary finger game that aims to provide inspiration for the traffic of the future.

At the beginning of this year, the Swiss presented an electrically powered Smart at their home fair, which, thanks to a seamlessly dockable trailer with an additional battery, can also cover long distances with zero emissions. In 2011 the small car Bamboo, made from renewable raw materials, was on display, and in 2010 a small electric car that was optimized for rail transport.
