One often hears the opinion that long-haul heavy-duty traffic is a domain for fuel cell trucks, that electric trucks would never be able to carry such heavy loads over long distances – especially since you can refuel with hydrogen much faster than charging one Batteries lasts.

A new Guinness record refutes this view. An electric truck drove 1,099 kilometers without charging. A Futuricum truck, which is normally on the road for DPD in Switzerland, was used to set the record. He has been driving back and forth between a Mohlin depot near Basel and a distribution center near Zurich for around six months, covering around 300 kilometers a day.

"We converted a Volvo FH to an electric drive for DPD Switzerland. Now the 19-ton truck has over 680 hp and the largest truck battery in Europe with a capacity of 680 kilowatt hours." (Designwerk boss Adrian Melliger)

"We converted a Volvo FH to an electric drive for DPD Switzerland," explains Adrian Melliger, Managing Director of Designwerk Products AG, the company behind the Futuricum brand. The 19-ton truck has a drive power of 500 kW, and the battery is said to be the largest truck battery in Europe with 680 kWh.

Our colleagues from InsdeEvs.com reported about the Futuricum truck as early as 2020. At that time it was said that the 680 kWh battery would provide a range of 760 km. At the time, colleague Mark Kane estimated the weight of the huge battery at 4.5 to 5.0 tons, based on the data from a vehicle version with 340 kWh, in which the battery weighed almost 2.3 tons.

The average speed was not high at 50 km / h, but that should correspond to a "realistic average value in everyday use", according to the partners. The temperatures of 14 degrees at the beginning were not ideal for this, with a wind blowing at an average of 18 km / h and gusts of up to 40 km / h.

The record was set near Hanover on the high-speed oval of the Contidrom, Continental's test track. On the 2.8 kilometer long oval, two drivers completed a total of 392 laps in shifts of 4.5 hours each. After just under 23 hours, the new Guinness record was set.

The Continental came for the tires EfficientPro is used, a model that was developed especially for long-distance transport and in which the range and low rolling resistance are in the foreground.
