- Zwickau: Volkswagen pioneer at the departure to the electric age
- Zwickau and Audi connects a long tradition
Together: In transformation towards emission-free mobility, Audi can set the synergy effects within the Volkswagen Group. How strong the sister brands benefit from close cooperation, Stressed Peter KOssler, Audi Executive Board for production and logistics and DR. Stefan Loth, chairman of the Management Board of Volkswagen Saxony, on the occasion of a media visit in the multi-brand Zwickau, where only electric cars are manufactured. Also thanks to shared platforms such as the modular electrification device (MEB) Audi will have more than 20 purely electrically powered models on the market by 2025.
2026 Audi wants his last combustion model and then new models only bring with electric drive to the world market. By 2033, the company finally leaves the production of his burners gradually leak. The premium manufacturer clearly relies on electromobility and accelerates its own transformation. The great goal: to unite individual mobility and sustainability for the clientele – and to grow profitably as a company at the same time.
A central role in the electrification strategy of Audi play the Q4 E-Tron and Q4 Sportback E-TRON – they offer a priced attractive entry into the electrical mobility of Ingolstadter. This makes this the platform strategy of the Volkswagen Group: Audi Q4 E-Tron and Q4 Sportback E-Tron are created in the multi-brand Zwickau, in which Volkswagen ID.3, ID.4 and recently drive the Cupra Born from the band. All models are based on the MEB, but points with their brand-specific strengths.
“In the future, we will put more strongly on synergies within the Volkswagen Group,” says Peter KOssler, Audi board for production and logistics. “This close cooperation makes the transition to emission-free premium mobility affordable for our Kund_innen affordable and economically. According to its own statement, the manufacturer ensures that the vehicles “unmistakably carry the Audi DNA”. The next important electromodium of Ingolstadter, the Q6 E-TRON, is based on a new group platform: the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) developed by Audi and Porsche.
Zwickau: Volkswagen pioneer at the departure to the electric age
At Volkswagen Saxony in Zwickau, around 8,500 employees currently produce five consolidated models – and all of the BILANCIAL CO2-Neutral. Dr. Stefan Loth, chairman of the management, says, “For us it is a special joy and at the same time challenge that we have transformed ourselves from a pure Volkswagen plant to a multi-brand location with six electro cars soon”. This is high demands on the employees. In the assembly, many novel and innovative technologies are in use, so the manufacturer: Setting the head-up display, for example, is for the first time directly in the production line. An intelligent software evaluates the test image projected on the windshield and independently assumes the fine adjustment.
Using joint platforms and technology modules is a proven strategy in the Volkswagen Group for decades. “Cross-branded teamwork starts when a new platform is designed,” says Fermin Soneira Santos, Head of Series for Electrom Models from the A- to the C segment. “Important is the right balance between unmistakable brand character and maximum synergies.”For example, the Q4 E-Tron is unmistakably a real Audi.
This not only show itself in the design, but also in the Audi-typical display and operating concept with a combination of virtual cockpit and extra large MMI, in the augmented reality head-up display, which brings the combination of virtual and real world into the compact class and in the claim of the brand Audi in quality and materials in the interior.
Not only in the technical platforms, even with the employees, the benefits of cross-brand cooperation: Currently, around 350 Audi employees in Zwickau production – especially young professionals who have just completed their vocational training. Their experiences in the field of activity of electromobility should then bring them back to their home sites after their one-year commitment in Zwickau – for example, at the start of the Q6 E-Tron at the Ingolstadt plant, which starts 2023 in the market.
Zwickau and Audi connects a long tradition
Incidentally, the roots of Audi are in Saxony: In order to enlarge his company, company founder August Horch went to Zwickau, where he was in 1904 the “A. Horch Motorenwagenwerke AG “entered into the commercial register. Thus, the foundation for the Saxon automotive industry was laid. According to differences with the Supervisory Board, Horch resigned from his company and founded 1909 the “August Horch Automobilwerke GmbH”, which in 1910 in “Audi Automobiles M.b.H.”Was renamed. 1932 Then another milestone in the company’s history: The four companies Audi, DKW, Horch and Hikers closed to Auto Union AG. And the trademark became the four rings.

Really exciting, what happens to Audi. You have given the burner the clearest cancellation of all corporate companies. I am very excited about how just the wholesale market. I think well.
Why should not you? Our company will not buy any combustion cars. The entertainment is much cheaper. Due to the environmental bonus, these are not more expensive. I would not have started there when I got a burner. Every company that does not set on alternative drives has too much money and does not need to speak of environmental protection.
We would like to have replaced our current gasoline A3 by a BEV variant. Is not in sight. The Q4 is too powerful and too expensive. So we switch from Audi after decades???
