The new Camaro throws everything overboard
Aggressive even when stationary: the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro
Golf or Astra, Pils or Export – there are alternatives that are often discussed like questions of faith. These include eternal rivals Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro. Will anyone ever win??
S.auger or turbo? VW or Opel? There are also questions of faith in the PS world. And anyone who, like me, has a soft spot for American cars will have to choose between a Ford Mustang and a Chevrolet Camaro at some point.
Both are legendary US cars, both have been on the market for half a century now, and both are so similar that you can only like one or the other.
Why the sports car trade is booming in the USA
The prices for noble speedsters like Ferrari, Porsche or Lamborghini are exploding in the USA. Investors see this as an alternative to stocks and commodities. Rare models in particular achieve record prices. Source: The World
After having been able to drive pretty much all versions and generations of both models in recent years, this question became so clear to me at some point that I recently even bought a Ford Mustang myself. I can’t wait for it to finally get warmer again and for me to be able to really open it up for the first time.
But now, of all times, Chevrolet counters in this eternal duel with a new Camaro that throws everything upside down. The sports car will officially be launched in Germany in the summer. Prices are not yet known, the old one started at 40,000 euros.
Hard on the outside and very hard on the inside
The sixth generation of the cult classic not only looks adorable; The designers made everything new with the coupe and somehow left everything the same. The coupe is also great to drive.
A few centimeters shorter and tighter than before, two centimeters lighter and built on the stiffer platform of the Cadillac ATS, the Camaro has finally turned from a show runner to a sports car that you can have fun with not only on the boulevard, but also on one lonely mountain road.
Fires from four tubes: the Chevrolet Camaro has 618 hp and can sprint to 100 km / h in 4.0 seconds
You don’t have to force the car around corners anymore. Its long bow pulls itself into the tightest radii, cuts the apex by a hair-cut margin and then straightens itself so quickly that there is hardly any time left to step on the gas.
Clack, clack, clack – the gears change like a hammer and only a very fine vibration goes through the rear when the thick rollers on the rear axle find a grip on the asphalt. Then the car rushes towards the next bend, making every pass road a heavenly pleasure.
Mustang vs. Camaro – The duel continues
I just have to state that, even if, as a Mustang owner, I could be biased and would like to say otherwise. Even more: I have to admit that the Ford does not drive quite as precisely and is not quite as sharp.
Black, red, fine – our author likes the interior a lot. Even better than that of his Ford Mustang
What really hurts me is the interior finesse with which Chevrolet outperforms my Ford. The seats are more comfortable and provide more lateral support, the short stub gear is easier to grip, the instrument cluster with a large monitor in the middle is clearer and a generation more modern, the free-standing screen above the center tunnel throws my digital display back into the days of tube TVs. The switch strips and the climate control are at Audi level.
After a few hours with the Camaro, my belief in the Mustang actually began to shake.
