How the Federal Government prevents climate sprit as an electrical alternative
Site Climate frit should come: We will soon refuel all CO2-neutral?
Site author Carl Christian Jancke
German carmakers put everything on the battery car – especially Volkswagen. Synthetic fuels would be an alternative and could make millions of existing petrol vehicles less emission. But Germany is on the climate brake.
The German federal government relies on electromobility, alternatives are not intended for car traffic, at least for car traffic. This applies to the line of some German car manufacturers, especially that of the Semi-State Volkswagen Group. However, it prevents the customer’s freedom of choice whether they would prefer to drive an emission-low car with an electric drive or with non-fossil fuels in the future. Both are possible – depending on the electricity mix and the fuel source.With a letter from the State Secretary Jochen Flasbarth from the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Security, Michael Gunther, Transport and Digital Infrastructure as well as Andreas Feicht, Business and Energy successfully prevented the Federal Government in 2019, which has already been prevented in 2019, one of up to 90 %-y CO2 savings could be sold at petrol stations without any structural change in the vehicle population.

"Agora traffic transition": Lobby network for emobility
Flasbarth is one of the most influential electric car lobbyists behind the political backdrops. In a speech to found the "Agora traffic transition", Runned by the Mercator Foundation and the European Climate Foundation (ECF), Flasbarth presented the direction in summer 2016 in which the work of the lobby network developed: “We wrote into the climate protection plan that we actually none from 2030 Cars with conventional combustion engine are allowed to allow more". Politics are already very close to this goal.
Federal government does not want synthetic fuels
A spokesman for the BMU confirms that nothing has changed in the course of the Federal Government: “The Ordinance on the nature and the distinction of the qualities of strength and fuels in the version of 13. December 2019 (10. BImSchV) regulates which fuels may be sold at German petrol stations. Pure organic and synthetic fuels may only be mixed, but not in pure form.”Three arguments are listed for this step:
- The diesel replacement contains palm oil;
- The vehicle manufacturers would have given no release;
- An EU contractual infringement procedure is threatened because the inclusion of synthetic and biological fuels is associated with a breastfeeding period of three months.
Private The German federal government lobbyed against synthetic fuels so as not to endanger its own 100%electrical strategy
If you take a closer look, none of these reasons convince. The latter argument is more likely to be due to the sleepiness of the bureaucracy. An insider who was involved in the trial even claims that the Federal Environment Ministry has deliberately delayed the issuance of the BImSchV so that it could not be passed in time to keep this deadline.
Palm oil in the tank?
And what about palm oil in the tank? The provider of C.A.R.E-diesel in Germany, the company Tolfuels, certified that no palm oil is used during production. And on the homepage of the same company you will find the shares for paraffine diesel blatings of 36 vehicle manufacturers, including Audi, BMW, Citroen, Daimler Trucks, Ford, GM, Hyundai, Mini, Nissan, Opel, Peugeot, Renault, Toyota, Volvo Cars and VW.However: In some cases, the releases only apply to US diesel vehicles or trucks. "The approval for the manufacturers is not quite cheap due to the necessary technical review, so it only makes sense for manufacturers if the released fuel is available at all," says engine and exhaust gas expert Prof. Thomas Koch from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.
Toolfuel.EU The synthetic diesel "C.A.R.E" According to the manufacturer, it has been completely without a use of palm oil since 2019
Incidentally, any liability of the manufacturers only applies during the guarantee and warranty periods. The old “stinkers” in particular could easily refuel synthetic diesel and would not emit almost no greenhouse gases in the balance sheet. For the transport sector in particular, this would be a sensible alternative that would be much cheaper, easier and faster than the conversion of heavy load traffic to electric trucks.

Climate prit allowed in many EU countries
In the rest of the European Union, one is more open to the air conditioner than Germany as a supplement to electromobility than Germany. "The distribution of alternative fuels in pure form is allowed in the rest of the EU," says Alexander StOhr, Managing Director of the C.A.R.E Diesel provider “Tolfuel”. A release would probably boost the demand for CO2-free diesel fuel, if only because the third CO2 tax introduced in January 2021 for drivers (according to eco-tax and vehicle tax) would not be used.
Nest An ecosprit petrol station in Finland
One thing is clear: the low-CO2 climate sprit is currently even more expensive than normal diesel. In Finland C.A.R.E. Diesel currently for approx. 1.75 euros per liter sold. But without the CO2 tax, the fossil petrol and fossil diesel in Germany extremely expensive, the fuel would probably be competitive quickly. The price explosion in the fuel that is supposed to force German car buyers in electric cars would be omitted, for example, would be omitted.
Emobility costs taxpayers billions
The market is given the chance to save more CO2 than the 30 percent stipulated by the Federal Government by quota. And this savings would not be financed by the taxpayer, but by private sector companies. Instead of 6000 euros bonus and vehicle tax slice (approx. 12.000 euros over the lifespan) With the electric car, the reduction is practically free.Lukas KOhler, climate policy spokesman for the FDP parliamentary group, is surprised by the behavior of the federal government: “It is completely incomprehensible why the federal government does not focus on any form of CO2 reduction and prevents the use of alternative fuel. The FDP parliamentary group made a corresponding application in 2019, C.A.R.E -diesel in the DIN – standard and in the BImSchV.""
Climate sprit has long been sold in neighboring countries
Incidentally, this takes place outside of the supposed environmental pupil in Germany. In Benelux and Scandinavia alone is C.A.R.E. Diesel, which is produced on food and plant fat waste by the Finnish company Neste in Rotterdam and Singapore, available from around 500 petrol stations. They didn’t have to set up charging stations and do not build new power grids. It is delivered as ever with the tanker and is fueled at the traditional petrol pump. And the paraffine fuel also fulfills all the necessary DIN standards for diesel, which is why nothing stands in the way of approval by the manufacturers.It is questionable whether the factual prohibition of the fuel in Germany does not violate European competition law, since sales in the rest of the EU is permitted.Olaf Toedter from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology explains the rather complex situation in approval: “These synthetic diesel are in all sizes in the standard of diesel fuels from fossil sources, except the density of the fuel. That is why so -called paraffin diesel are standardized in the standard EN 15940. The CA. However, 20% lower density does not prevent these fuels from being used in diesel vehicles of the existing fleet. A ban on the diesel according to EN 15940 thus excludes the use of all e-fuel-diesel as a pure fuel. The only addiction within the density boundaries of the EN590 remains, which is the possible additive to 26 vol.% limited. Such a mixed fuel is as "R33" Also to recharge it in Germany, limits both the possible possible CO2 reduction and the ride of the e-fuel diesel, which would otherwise enable a maximum CO2-reduced operation of diesel vehicles (commercial vehicles and cars). Technically there are no obstacles here.”In other words: Although there is an EU standard for paraffins, Germany does not allow it to. At least the neste diesel corresponds to the DIN EN 15940.
Production of air conditioning starts in many countries
According to its own statements, neste now produces 3.2 million tons of renewable fuels in Singapore, Rotterdam and Porvoo (Finland). That is more than 10 percent of the diesel used in Germany. By 2023 the capacity should be at 4.5 million. Tons are increased. In Singapore alone, the capacity of 1.3 million tons could be doubled. For the World Economic Forum, McKinsey has estimated that at least 40% of the crude oil due to traffic can be replaced by the use of biological and synthetic fuels. Climate -neutral and without emissions. That would already help considerably to achieve climate neutrality by 2045.

To create such investments, freedom of legal and discrimination is required, of course. The Finnish Neste facility in Singapore cost 1.5 billion. Euro. Little in comparison with the infrastructure investments and subsidies for electromobility, but still a lot of money. Some investors are in the starting blocks and are only waiting for reliable regulatory conditions by Berlin and above all Brussels, where the promise of technology openness is at best lip service and has so far had no concrete consequences.
When waste becomes fuel
Recent projects have not yet been praised. The University of Applied Science Hamburg is researching at decentralized systems for the production of biofuels. They are container-sized and can be set up in the courtyard of the waste disposal company. "Waste -based fuels can be manufactured for less than one euro per liter," reports Prof. Dr. Thomas Willner.If these new fuels are always dependent on it, only in the bureaucratic wording of 10. BIMSCHV is taken, the competition between the various energy sources and drive types is in any case slowed down. In addition to the – undeniable – there is a great interest in alternative fuels in addition to the – undeniable – trend towards electromobility. The Indian Minister of Transport Nitin Gadkari has loud "Business standard" determined that the car manufacturers are obliged to offer vehicles within six months that can only be operated with organic fabrics (so-called Flex fuel engines). In Brazil, the production of such ethanol fuels has been almost doubled from 18 billion to 33.14 liters within twelve years to 2019 and the biodiesel share should also be 15% in the threshold by 2033. In Germany, just 7% are currently being added. Piquant: The Volkswagen Group, which no longer wants to do anything except electrical, of course also relies on biofuels in South America.
