The new hero of the traveling salesman is celebrating its premiere as a sedan and station wagon these days at the Paris Salon, but will not go on sale until the second half of 2015.

A technical highlight in the Passat cockpit is the Active Info Display, which is available at an additional cost. Except for a few indicator lights, everything is digital here, including the speedometer and Tachometer. The driver can also change their position and size, for example to create more space for the navigation display, as shown here. Design peculiarity in the VW: The four ventilation nozzles are optically combined in a single wide band, only interrupted by the instrument cluster.

Just like in the Golf, the Lower Saxony group combines a 1.4-liter gasoline engine with an electric motor and a battery that can also be charged from the socket for the Passat GTE. However, in view of the larger car, VW has turned it all over again: The gasoline engine therefore develops 156 hp, the electric motor has 115 hp, and the system output increases from 204 to 218 hp. The battery is also bigger and now has a capacity of 9.9 kWh.

Charged within four hours from the socket or half the time from a wallbox, the Passat can cover up to 50 purely electric kilometers at a top speed of 130 km / h. Because this proportion is fully included in the consumption calculation, the standard value falls below 2.0 liters and CO2 emissions below 45 g / km.

With a filling from Paris to London

But the Passat GTE is not only economical, but also a fast endurance runner, advertise the Wolfsburg-based company. With a total of 400 Nm, the double pack accelerates the mid-range model series from 0 to 100 in eight seconds and then up to 220 km / h. And because there is a 50-liter tank in addition to the battery, the GTE only has to make a pit stop every 1000 kilometers.

In Germany, the Jetta has a rather staid image. In the USA, however, the notchback version of the Golf has been a bestseller for years. A facelift should now help thats the car sells a little better in this country too.

It can only get better, because the sales figures in Germany are very bad: The Jetta only found 2500 buyers in this country in 2013.

However, it is questionable whether the revision will bring the desired success, because the changes are marginal.

The trunk is also generous: 510 liters fit into the luggage compartment of the Jetta. For comparison: 565 liters fit in the Passat. Incidentally, the starting price for the Jetta is 21.725 euros. This makes it around 4,000 euros cheaper than a Passat.

Just like in the Golf GTE, the driver controls the interaction of the engines at the push of a button and can choose between four operating modes: From pure battery use to mixed operation in hybrid mode and battery charging to the sportier GTE profile in which saving a little is in takes a back seat. If you do this skillfully, you can drive from Paris to London and back with one full tank and battery and also go for a stroll in the two cities.

It is true that the eyes of the fleet managers should light up at these prospects, and a CO2 value of 45 g / km will significantly polish their balance sheet. But of course there is one catch: the price. VW does not want to reveal it until next year. But here too, the Golf GTE should serve as a model. Because apart from the Golf R, it is the most expensive model in the range.
