Hybrid vehicles: bridge technology or real future?-future

In terms of hybrid, the opinions go apart. For one thing, it is only an intermediate step on the way to complete e-motorization, for others, on the other hand, the perfect and long-lasting connection of both worlds. A comparison.

Will still need to set the (indirect) future on a fuel that is won deeply from the earth under fair effort? With security, because until the world is established exclusively renewable electricity suppliers, many decades will pass until centuries.

But this fuel will also be transported directly in the car as in the gasoline tank of a hybrid? Here the answer is already less clear. Namely, hybrid vehicles are predicted by not a limited lifetime.

Therefore, because the “E-car with internal combustion engine” are obtained by the technological development in the medium term and finally become superfluous – so at least the theory. But what is really it? Is the currently popular hybrid actually only a transitional solution, which we will look back with so much amazement in a few decades, as today’s generation on the curious steam car?

The technology

When talking about “hybrid vehicles” is that there is only consensus that it is meant by cars that have installed both a combustion and electric motor including memory. But to venture a serious prediction of the future, the technical realities must first be broken down. Because “hybrid” is the choice between:

  • Micro-hybrid – A car without electric motor but with typical techniques such as brake energy recovery and start-stop automatic.
  • Mild hybrid – It is an electric motor including battery installed, but this is not strong enough to drive the car alone. He is more of a supporter.
  • Full-hybrid – Electrical and internal combustion engine are similarly powerful so that an “either or” or “operation is possible. However, the battery can only be loaded through the internal combustion engine.

In addition, the drivers are also further subdivided, with the following points in each case variants of the full-hybrid:

  • Parallel hybrids Connect the combustion and electric motor in a common drive train, so that depending on the driving situation, a switching is possible.
  • Serial hybrids are primarily powered by the electric motor. The internal combustion engine only exists to power the batteries with electricity.
  • Plugin hybrids are the last evolutionary stage of the serial hybrids. You can also load the batteries via connectors

First of all, this means “the” hybrid vehicle that could be a bridge technology, does not exist first. If there should be some of the technological development in the future, then only certain groups of it.

Mild and micro-hybrids

Where the electric motor does not exist, or not strong enough to move the car without further drive support, is most likely a remedy – should one believe.

In fact, it is so that the development and sale of the micro-hybrid with the fuel prices stand and fall – currently they rise, because the OPEC has agreed on a promotion throttling. This makes micro-hybrids quite interesting due to their consumption savings compared to normal burners and it is foreseeable that these techniques have to become standard in the coming years anyway in order to comply with increasing emissions specifications.

However, the day will come to the fuel no longer affordable enough is for the daily hoofing of Otto normal consumers – this will mean for the micro-hybrid – and also the mild hybrids whose electric motor is rather a better turbocharger. In racing, however, this technique will still persist. This shows the Formula 1 team Mercedes. There, the Hybrid has been a firm place for three seasons, which leads the “silver arrows” from victory to victory and yet is only at the beginning.

Intermediate conclusion: Micro- and mild hybrids are indeed a bridge technology and thus will be the first hybrids that will lose in importance.

With each cent, the gasoline or diesel becomes more expensive, all vehicles that have such a motor are unincendent – so at least the theory. But who attaches her, percusses. To explain that, you have to take a look at the pure electrical engineering.

The most often expressed criticism of pure electric vehicles is the lack of range. And so far there are also hardly electric vehicles, which have a definite end of this trend, except for light views such as the Lucid Air -.

But this is not due to the automakers, but the technical realities of the batteries – the physical fact that a battery is all the more heavier the more capacity you have, is still standing. And that, although countless manufacturers work on future-oriented vehicle batteries.

And at this point the whole hybrid comes back into the game. Already here with us in the densely populated Central Europe you complain about too thin supply networks in terms of electricity tank stations – that will certainly change, even with legal assistance, for short or long, so that the networks are actually sufficient to make pure electric vehicles comfortable – themselves If there were no quantum jumps in the battery development.

In other regions of the world – and that does not even have to be developing countries – but it looks completely different:

  • USA
  • Canada
  • Russia
  • China
  • Africa
  • Australia

To name only a few, nations are or continents in which extremely large distances are to be bridged. Already today there are normal routes in the west of the US or in Australia, on which between two petrol stations hundreds of miles are. And exactly in these corners of the world, the full hybrid will still be necessary for quite a while.

Because as long as the state does not intervene and from every 20 kilometers, such as somewhere in the Siberian sustenance, a charging station installed, no one will do – a simple reality of the market economy relying on profitability that rarely gives it on these routes. In short, there will always be white spots on the charging stations world map without government support.

And as long as there are no electric cars with a battery charge for each outside temperature with the 1.000 or more kilometers of a modern combustion engine can compete for these distances must be an alternative – and that is the hybrid, probably as a plugin. Because the only alternative would be to be able to drive no car more on some routes – and that’s simply unthinkable whether the daily rising mobility levels around the world.

Environmental Protection

The chambers of the world is growing daily. And although a pure electric car is completely free of CO2 and other pollutants, it is still true that the battery production and also the power generation through coal and other fossil fuels also tipping the environmental balance again. Curious way it could be the whole hybrid that can intervene here help. Because he also has similar problems of environmental friendliness, the fact is in the room that:

  • Batteries
  • engine
  • Electric components

In the case of hybrid smaller – per vehicle, less precious materials such as nickel and lithium must be promoted and it will not be so much CO2 in the production of air blown into the air. That’s just one point, the other is even more important. Because a pure electric car requires mandatory electricity, quite the same as environmentally harmful to this. And so surprising it sounds, for the environment, it can certainly make a difference, if one switches to the internal combustion drive for half an hour to the next eco-electric power supply and only a few grams of CO2 blows into the air, or inevitably on a power outlet must stop, which is powered by a coal-fired power plant, which causes an uneven higher amount of environmental impairment for the same time.

On top of that, in Central Europe, how long, curved and stony, the way into sustainable power generation is – although the so-called energy turning has existed for around 35 years in different stages, we are still miles away from switching off the last coal or gas power plant be able to. In other nations, this time is still much more distant future.

This means itself in a very positive scenario:

  • It takes years until pure electric cars have enough reach
  • Needs a lot of patience until the supply network is as good as with classic gas stations
  • Will still pass many decades until electricity is produced nationwide regenerative

And until this point is reached worldwide, ie eco flow in the same density is present, such as the current gas station network, the hybrid will continue to have any existence. Especially as a full hybrid in which the owner has the free choice in which form he wants to be driven.

Combustion technology

One last point is dedicated to the internal combustion engine. For although it has been made here in the past decades of tremendous quantum jumps in terms of fuel efficiency, the end of the flagpole is still not reached. Today’s hybrid usually drives with a gasoline engine – among other things, because mostly urban short distances are used, which a diesel does not master so well for technical reasons.

However, the hybrid of tomorrow could drive with natural gas – that is already cleaner as gasoline or diesel when burning.

And last but not least, extensive and environmentally harmful intermediate steps from the petroleum to the fuel are necessary – the gas is omitted. Also, because gas is not necessarily due to the earth, but can also arise as a foul gas.

In addition, the combustion engine approaches its limit of development, but that does not yet mean that there is not something to improve – and here there are still a lot of opportunities that will still hold the full-hybrids for some time at the pulse of time.

Conclusion – Hybrid Vehicles: Bridge Technology or Real Future?

There are hybrid techniques that are actually just a bridge technology. However, until solutions have been found that make both battery production and power generation environmentally friendly and ensure that a pure electric car can be charged within a few minutes in any weather and is similar to a cargo, such as an internal combustion engine, the hybrid becomes also exist.

He is a bridge technology – which, however, is likely to hold many decades and that, which is even more environmentally friendly to complete energy transition, as a pure electric vehicle.

  1. Interesting consideration, but the topic of environmental impact of various drive concepts, as unfortunately mostly, a few hardly respected facts ignore: When comparing the CO2 emissions, the burner is often considered only the value that comes from the exhaust while the e- Vehicle is considered the power generation. Just in the same, fuel production, transport and storage should also be included in the invoice at the burner. And there should also be considered that considerable amounts of electricity are spilled for the refining of the oil, which in case of doubt is also extracted from coal. All in all, at the burner, the burner is very fast to 500 to 800 grams of CO2 per kilometer, while in the E-vehicle, even if the power is generated exclusively from coal and are also considered there all process steps, just over 40 to 80 are. And finally, the electric motor goes much more efficiently with the energy than the burner. So it speaks much more for E-vehicles as a landline accepted or. as a matter of so-called experts, which often close to the oil lobby.
