Hymer, Burstner, Dethleffs or Eura Mobil: The big manufacturers are already giving away what they have to offer for the coming year. Family mobiles with two bunk beds cost less than 40,000 euros.

W.he is smart, works counter-cyclically. And that is why the manufacturers of mobile homes are already presenting their news for the coming year now that the 2013 holiday season is slowly coming to an end.

What can already be predicted, given the information so far, without taking too great a risk: The trend towards partially integrated mobile homes will continue in 2014. In this category, the standard driver’s cab of a basic vehicle is combined with an individual body. This keeps the costs under control, and at the same time the concept enables generous superstructures.

The mobile homes are mainly bought by the elderly, which is also reflected in the preferences of the customers: Models with single beds in the rear as well as those with a large queen or king-size bed that stands freely in the rear are still in demand. So-called open-plan bathrooms are also popular, in which the shower cubicle and wash / toilet room are connected by a specific door position and can thus be used as a dressing room at the same time.

The customers pay attention to the price

A certain price pressure can also be felt. No wonder, mobile homes are not special offers, anyone who wants upscale equipment and a certain size can go up to or into the six-figure range. That is why many manufacturers pay great attention to their entry-level series, because younger customers in particular are price-conscious.

Hobby is an example of this: the focus here is on the realignment of the Siesta series, which is offered at prices from 40,000 euros. The basis is the Fiat Ducato with a low-frame chassis; both vans and semi-integrated vehicles and alcove vehicles are built, with sleeping accommodation in an overhang above the driver’s cab. There is a choice of three diesel variants with 115, 130 and 148 hp. All models belong to the 3.5 ton class, so that holders of the B driving license can drive them all.

Dethleffs is also setting financial accents for the 2014 season: prices from 42,000 are promised for a new series. It consists of three semi-integrated vehicles on a low-frame chassis and two alcoves with a ladder-frame chassis. Here, too, the Fiat Ducato serves as the technical basis. The concepts vary from family carriages with bunk beds for the children to vehicles for two with single beds or a king-size bed.

Lots of new things for 40,000 euros

Even those who slim down can save costs, especially those on fuel. That is why Hymer is focusing on lightweight construction: The Exsis-i, which is already very light in itself, comes as an even more lightweight, partially integrated version, at prices from 49,990 euros. 2,700 kilos when ready to drive represent the smallest version of the newcomer in the room. Hymer wants to achieve this with a lightweight floor made of glass fiber reinforced plastic (GRP) with Styrofoam insulation, a lightweight structure and a special frame. Around 80 percent of all of the manufacturer’s models now weigh less than 3.5 tons.

The new offerings from Lord Munsterland Caravan (LMC) should be lighter and at the same time more weather-resistant thanks to "Long Life Technology" LLT. The use of wood is completely avoided; instead, GRP roof cladding and underbody provide hail protection and weather resistance. In addition, there are polyurethane struts for stability and torsional rigidity as well as a moisture-resistant high-performance insulating core in the roof, sides and floor.

The southern German manufacturer Carthago, on the other hand, is going back to its roots: With the subsidiary brand "Malibu" and the models 600 and 630, Carthago is opening up the panel van segment, with which the Carthago success story began – because Malibu was the name of their camper van hit in the 1980s and nineties. The two new models are available from around 40,000 euros. They differ mainly in the design of the rear. If the six-meter-long Malibu 600 is carried on a transverse double bed in the rear area, single beds complete the 6.36-meter-long 630.

Eura Mobil with a new brand

Manufacturer Eura Mobil is even creating its own brand to serve the lower price segment. It is called “Forster” and the first season is starting with three alcove and four partially integrated models. With their hail-protected GRP walls and roofs, the vehicles prove that inexpensive does not necessarily mean cheaply made.

All models are almost completely equipped ex works, so that the list of accessories is clearly laid out. Prices start at 39,490 euros for the cheapest alcove and go up to 41,990 euros for a 7.38 meter long semi-integrated.

Weinsberg from the Bavarian forest has announced the CaraBus, a van with a high roof, under which there is space for a fold-down bed. In this way, the space above the driver’s cab and the adjoining seating area can be optimally used. In the rear, the 601 MQH also offers two bunk beds so that it can be used as a family mobile. The price is 39,870 euros.
