- Seamless integration of hardware and software
- Redundances secure all important functions
- Already carried hundreds of thousands of passengers
Hyundai and Motional, driving a world leader in autonomous driving, have introduced the Ioniq 5 Robotaxi, a next-generation self-propelled taxi. Based on the purely electric Hyundai Ioniq 5, which is offered on the German market since June, the Ioniq 5 Robotaxi is an autonomous vehicle on SAE level 4, which can be operated safely without drivers. It drives local-emission-free and stands for the convergence of the two technologies, which the individual mobility is most strongly changing: electrification and autonomization. The merger of both technologies results in smarter, safer and more sustainable mobility, according to Hyundai in a recent communication.
The Ioniq 5 Robotaxi is also Motional’s first commercial vehicle and a central milestone in the development planning of the company. The US company Motional wants 2023 starting passengers with the Ioniq 5 Robotaxi in the course of a pioneering partnership with the Ride Hailing Service Lyft.
With its technology-driven design, the IoniQ 5 Robotaxi underlines the innovations that are behind its autonomous operation. Thus, the sensor package of the vehicle was not hidden, but clearly visibly distributed over the exterior, so that the robotaxi can be easily distinguished by conventional vehicles with drivers. The Robotaxi has more than 30 sensors – cameras, radar and lidar – which ensure reliable 360 degree detection of the environment, supplying high-resolution images and also to recognize objects at a very large distance. This ensures trouble-free autonomous operation in different environments, according to Hyundai. Motional proven driverless technology also include advanced machinery learning systems. They have been analyzed with data from real road traffic of several decades and should enable the vehicle to master challenging and complex situations.
The Ioniq 5 Robotaxi is based on the production vehicle on the Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), which is specially developed for battery-electric vehicles Hyundai architecture. It offers the occupants in the Ioniq 5 Robotaxi a spacious and comfortable interior with plenty of space for working, relaxing or communicating during your driverless ride.
Likewise, the vehicle has a number of interfaces with which passengers can intuitively interact with the vehicle, for example, to move the robotaxi to an extra stop. The experience in the Ioniq 5 Robotaxi set new standards for the so-called driverless ride-haying, requested requests for individual rides regardless of the timetable.
Seamless integration of hardware and software
The IoniQ 5 Robotaxi constructed for the driverless operation was created in a partnership of Hyundai and Motional. Both partners worked in hand throughout the development of hand, with each company incorporated its respective strengths: Hyundai reached for his research and development capacity as well as his know-how in global vehicle production, while Motional contributed the driverless technologies to.
The result is the manufacturer a seamless integration between “brain” and “muscles” of the vehicle, so that hardware and autonomy software are perfectly synchronized to enable extremely advanced, safe and powerful operation without drivers. The ultrafast loading times and the high reaches of the E-GMP form the ideal base. Safety and reliability of the IoniQ 5 Robotaxi correspond to the highest Hyundai standard. In addition, the concept is scalable worldwide, which makes the Robotaxi optimal conditions for cost-effective marketing.
Redundances secure all important functions
“This Robotaxi represents our vision, according to which a driverless future becomes reality,” says Karl Iagnemma, President and CEO of Motional. “Through our strategic partnership with the Hyundai Motor Group and Aptiv, we have unprecedented expertise in terms of vehicles and software throughout the development process. This deep cooperation enables us to produce a robotaxi that is both safe and reliable as well as cost-optimized for global production. We focus on mass marketing, and the Ioniq 5 Robotaxi is exactly done.”
Hyundai and motional attach particular importance to safety and comfort, which the vehicle should radiate at first glance. Each function, be it navigation, steering, brakes or drive, has security redundances to always enable a safe and trouble-free ride. Motional also offers a remote-controlled support of the vehicle, the Ioniq 5 Robotaxi once on unusual road conditions meet, for example in a route barrier due to a construction site. In such a case, a motional employee can connect directly to the vehicle and assign him a new route.
“Hyundai Motor has its Ioniq 5, a battery-electric vehicle on a well-intended platform, further developed into a full-car vehicle,” says Woongjun Jang, Head of the Autonomous Driving Center of the Hyundai Motor Group. “The Ioniq 5 Robotaxi has added various redundant systems, in addition to a package of essential technologies that ensure the safety and convenience of the occupants. After successfully integrating the autonomous technologies of motional into the Ioniq 5 Robotaxi, we are proud to announce that we have reached another important milestone on the way to marketing our robotaxis.”
Motional was founded in March 2020 and is a joint venture between the Hyundai Motor Group, one of the largest automakers in the world, and Aptiv, a technology leader in advanced security, electrification and vehicle connectivity. Motional was founded to advance the development and marketing of the world’s most powerful and safest autonomous vehicles.
Already carried hundreds of thousands of passengers
The Motional team has built his expertise in driverless technology for decades and at the same time has a lot of experience in terms of commercial robotaxi services. The company has already transported hundreds of thousands of passengers with his self-propelled service in the network of Lyft in Las Vegas, the most famous public Robotaxi fleet. Motional is also the only company of its kind, working with two large ride-hairing companies: Lyft and Via.
With this experience in the back, motional enters the next phase of its commercial development plan: 2023 starts a completely driving service in the LYFT network. The Ioniq 5 Robotaxis are to be distributed through various cities of the United States and thus mark a turning point for autonomous driving. So you should lay the foundation for establishing robotaxis worldwide.
For the first time, Hyundai and Motional will present the Ioniq 5 Robotaxi at the IAA Mobility of the public, from the 7. Until 12. September 2021 takes place in Munich. Hyundai wants to publish more information during the fair.
