Hyundai’s new mini SUV – what can the Korean?

With the Bayon, Hyundai attacks in the small car crossover segment. But the SUV is more than just an i20 on stilts and in particular the chassis leaves a good impression. The many available assistance systems are positive, the hard plastic content in the interior is less tingling.
Jurgen Keller is with himself and the world in peace. Hyundai Germany has put the best annual start of the company’s history in percentage. Because the market share rose from 3.2 percent to 3.4 percent between January and May. "Of course I’m very happy," beams the Germany boss. The wiry manager was granted the good mood, after all he had to accept enough neck strokes during his time at Opel. Hyundai celebrates its 30th anniversary in Germany this year and if you look at the change of the South Korean car manufacturer, then Keller has every reason to be proud. The Asians have blossomed into a veritable competitor for the established manufacturers of – euphemistically spoken – vehicles with solid technology. Jurgen Keller calls this "innovation driver" and because the word "hustle and bustle" just goes over the lips, the Ioniq 5 Stromer will "drive" the competition in front of them ".

"The provider of alternative drives"
After all, Hyundai wants to become "the provider of alternative drives among the importers". A statement that is surely heard at Toyota with interest. The words are to follow action: In the next four years, twelve continues to appear worldwide and give Asians ten percent on the global electromobility market. Ambitious goals. It will be exciting whether they are achieved. At the moment, the South Korean car manufacturer has to deal with the old mobility world at the Bayon. Say with models that have a combustion engine as a drive. But even there, Hyundai is no longer satisfied with the remains that leave the others behind at the table. Because the segment of the B-segment crossover is growing in Europe, but is hard fighter and is highly contested by vehicles such as the Opel Mokka, the VW T-Cross, the Ford Puma, the Seat Arona and also the well-behaved group of corporation in the form of the Kia Stonic.

No reason for Hyundai to be shorter. According to the Kona, which sells well, the Bayon is supposed to round off the model offer at the "crossover SUVs" (Hyundai speech). When getting in, there are little questions about relatives: The interior shows the close connection to the segment brother i20, with which the Bayon shares the platform. The interior seems tidy in the positive sense of the word. The operating of the infotainment by 10.25 inch touchscreen gave us no problems, the menus were exactly among the symbols where you can expect them. The fact that the smartphone is integrated via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto is now also of course in the small car crossover segment. The pretty virtual instruments of the 10.25 inch cockpit go well with the modern appearance of the Bayon.

As successful as the technology is, this can only be said to a limited extent about the interior ambience. Because we found ourselves in a plastic desert. Although Hyundai tries to get some momentum into the matter with risered surfaces, at least in the upper area of the instrument panel, but the further the look and the button fingers hike down, the more monotonous the material impression becomes. This simply looks better at Kia due to the fresher design. It must be mentioned fairly that our test car with the middle trend equipment line is a basic price of 22.490 euros and a total price of 24.Had 940 euros. There is then a air conditioning, a heated steering wheel and seat heating at the front. If you want automatic climate automatic, you use the comfort package for 650 euros extra. The 4.18 meter long Bayon plays its full strength in the square. Even tall Central Europeans can find space in the rear. The trunk is neat with a capacity of 334 liters. The reason can be found when you raise the loading floor in the battery that is attached to a lacquered tub. In addition, the loading edge is up and the hatch is tight. If you put on the back seats’ back seats, the luggage compartment grows to 1.128 liters.

On the way, the Bayon chassis leaves a good, because tight but harmonious impression. The Bayon is never uncomfortable and there is no trouble bipping of the body. The charged one-three-cylinder engine comes with the 1.Correctly right -hand crossover, but acoustically speaks when things get a bit more forced. This Bayon is certainly not a dynamic leader, but also not a straggler. In 10.7 seconds, the 100 km/h has been reached and it continues up to 183 km/h. The 48 volt mild hybridization helps to close the turbo hole and the six-speed manual circuit (6-real) has an electronically regulated coupling, which feels just like the classic pedal. The big advantage of the system is that it also allows sailing with decoupled engine, which works without any problems and the reorganization of the engine into the tunneling business goes smoothly. In the three driving modes ECO, normal and sport, the appearance of the virtual instruments and of course also the driving behavior changes. So the system at Sport gets everything out of the drive train, acts rather reserved at ECO and likes to sail. Hyundai specifies an average consumption of 5.5 l/100 km, we got 6.9 l/100 km during our test drives. The assistance systems are a real plus. Among other things, a dead angle warning supports the Bayon, an emergency brake assistant with a turning function and the cross traffic warning to the pilot.
