Fuel cell truck has been revised for the 2021 model year
Hyundai has redesigned its fuel cell truck called the Xcient Fuel Cell. In addition to changed details of the optics, the truck also gets a higher performance.
The Hyundai Xcient is a heavy truck that has been on the market since 2013. A fuel cell version was presented in 2019. According to the manufacturer, the Xcient Fuel Cell is "the world’s first series-produced heavy-duty vehicle powered by hydrogen".
The newly designed radiator grille has a V-shape and a chrome-plated honeycomb look. Blue color details are said to be the environmentally friendly fuel cells-Emphasize drive. The new model year of the truck has a 180 kW fuel cell system that consists of two 90 kW stacks. The longevity of the fuel cell system has been improved, and hydrogen consumption should now be lower. An electric motor with 350 kW and 2,237 Newton meters of torque provides the drive.

The seven hydrogen tanks store a total of around 31 kilograms of the gas. They fill up completely in eight to 20 minutes. Three 72 kWh batteries act as an additional energy source. The manufacturer specifies the range at around 400 kilometers.
The revised Xcient Fuel Cell from model year 2021 is not only available as a 4×2 version but also as a 6×2 chassis with double rear axles.
As early as 2020, Hyundai delivered 46 units of the truck to Switzerland, which have since covered a total of 750,000 kilometers. Compared to diesel trucks, they have already saved around 585 tons of CO2, according to Hyundai.

Hyundai plans to deliver a further 1,600 fuel cell trucks to Europe by 2025. In the course of this year, another 140 pieces are to be handed over in Switzerland. There is also interest in other countries, according to Hyundai. "We are very confident that we will see the Xcient Fuel Cell truck on the road in other countries next year," says Mark Freymuller, the head of Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility, (HHM) a joint venture between Hyundai and the Swiss hydrogen specialist H2 Energy.
The Xcient Fuel Cell is to be presented on the North American market this year. To this end, Hyundai is in talks with local governments and logistics companies to jointly operate hydrogen trucks. According to Hyundai, China is also interested in hydrogen heavy-duty trucks. Here, too, Hyundai is currently examining options for introducing its fuel cell technology to corporate and government customers.
