In 2021, drivers in Germany lost less time in traffic jams than in the pre-pandemy year 2019. Nevertheless, the car drivers spent long hours of traffic in some places. The last year’s leader was also able to assert his crown in 2021.

Massive changes in the world of work through the corona crisis have led to a noticeable improvement in traffic jams in many cities in Germany – but not in the Hanseatic city. This emerges from an analysis of the traffic patterns by the mapping specialist TomTom, which was published in Berlin on Wednesday.

Hamburg remains a traffic jam and share first place with Wiesbaden

According to this, Hamburg was again the leader at traffic jams. Drivers lost 71 hours of traffic jams each year and, according to the study, had to calculate 31 percent more time as a result of viscous traffic. That was two percentage points more than in the previous year, but three percentage points less compared to 2019. Consolation can find Hamburg’s drivers in the worldwide TomTom statistics – here the Hanseatic city is only in 69th place.

Meanwhile, the city -state shared first place with Wiesbaden. In the state capital of Hesse, too, the loss of time due to traffic jams from 26 percent in 2020 rose to 31 percent. As in Hamburg, the car drivers lost 71 hours a year.

In Germany followed in Hamburg and Wiesbaden Berlin, Aachen, Nuremberg, Munich and Kassel. Dresden, Stuttgart and Cologne complete the top 10 list of cities in Germany, in which drivers lose most of their time through traffic disruptions.

Strong regional differences: In Dusseldorf, traffic jam level decreased by 21 percent

There were strong regional differences in the evaluation of the traffic figures: While a decline in the traffic jam level was measured by 21 percentage points in Dusseldorf, only a minus of five percentage points in Leipzig was recorded in Leipzig. According to the study, the traffic jam was even up or above the level of 2019 during the evening on the second half of the year during the evening rush hour traffic from the second half of the year.

For the “TomTom Traffic Index” for 2021, the data of smartphones and permanently installed navigation systems were evaluated. According to estimates, every seventh car in Germany was involved in the data collection.

In all 27 German cities that have been examined, car traffic has recently flowed at least as well or better than in 2019 on the daily average. As already in 2020, the loss of time last year was lower in 2019.

However, the difference to the last pre-pandemy year has shrunk. Compared to 2020, the loss of time for drivers is already noticeably increasing in many places. Only in five German cities – Kiel, Bremen, Karlsruhe, Dusseldorf and MOnchengladbach – the traffic jam level in 2021 was below the value from 2020.

  1. Well
A coincidence, wherever reds and greenlings are in charge, there are mostly traffic jams, now … But I am very surprised. There popup bike paths, Hauptverundstrasse. If, if possible, no ending construction sites are narrowed, if possible, construction sites are paralyzed, in 2021 there were 6615 demonstrations in Berlin alone that hinder traffic, i.e. all conscious measures to hinder individual traffic as much as possible, The declared goal of the Greens.

  2. I do not know
How it is organized in other cities, but here in Dusseldorf the traffic jams are politically planned and wanted across the party. If politics wants to bring about a traffic turnaround why you will never get it to expand the bus and train while driving a fitting price. The public here offer clocks including driving prices to which many citizens simply have to drive the car to use. Here, too.

  3. Traffic light circuit
In the cities, traffic jams are consciously created by contradictory traffic light circuits. The main roads get red longer than the side streets. Some local politicians of the Greens are even proud of it. You want to make car traffic unattractive. With us the traffic lights have now been switched so that all drivers have red and all pedestrian lights show green. The result is a regular long traffic jam in rush hour traffic. More CO2 emissions. The Greens are happy.
