Ionity relies on Plug & Charge function throughout Europe-ionity

Ionity does not only hear with negative headlines. Most recently, we were able to report cheaper charging prices, which are granted when concluding a corresponding subscription. Now the High Power Charging Network in Europe is another step to integrate e-mobility easier in everyday life. Keyword: plug & batch function.

The plug & charge function according to ISO 15118 allows drivers: inside of electric cars, such as Porsche Toycan, Ford Mach-E and Mercedes EQs, a quick, convenient and secure loading and payment process: As soon as the charging cable is in the vehicle, it becomes automatically identified on the charging station and authorized to load. For this, charging current contracts are read out directly from the car and protected by digital certificates. The charging process starts only after successful authentication. The billing is also automated – all necessary information is stored in the vehicle’s on-board system.

It really is not easier. Because payments on the charging station itself belong to the past. More than plug in, load and then remove the plug is not necessary. The billing is fully automatic. In order to guarantee the functionality of Plug & Charge according to the ISO 15118 standard, automotive and charging station manufacturers, as well as the different partners in e-roaming on uniform processes and interfaces for a secure certificate-based authentication process have agreed.

Dr. Susanne Koblitz, Head of Charging Technology at Ionity, gives to understand: “To get the communication chains to run, was a big challenge. It was necessary to develop Plug & Charge as an entire ecosystem. Together with relevant market participants, we realized a standardized system that allows all partners to authenticate each other, so that the electric vehicle and the charging station can communicate and at the same time ensure confidentiality, data integrity and authenticity.”

First tests for the Plug & Charge function are already started at the end of 2018. Since 2020, the function was then offered on several stations, especially in the German market. “After a gradual introduction in recent months, we look forward to seeing that Plug & Charge is now available to our customers throughout the network,” concluding Koblitz.

  1. But how does the system recognize through which tariff should be settled? At an ionity pillar, I pay significantly less than with my EnBW tariff via my Wecharge tariff. On other columns is exactly the other way around. In principle, the driver would have to share the desired tariff via his vehicle software, which should be settled before Plug & Charge starts. I can not imagine that this can be automated. Or am I wrong?

  2. Slowly it is progressing. This is an always used comfort function for me. And it was annoying so far, where there is no going to have to look out the map. Is history now. Good this way!

  3. With ionity you are faster with Plug & Charge on the long-distance with the same vehicle than with the SuperCharger network. Especially because you can load at the motorway station.
At Tesla you have to go down from the highway, which costs time and you have to reload a little more through the often several kilometers longer travel distance.

    What is still missing?
Vehicles with ranges like a gasoline, with 800V technology at prices, which are affordable for professional use.
Today you are still slower on the long-distance with the electric car than a diesel, like a representative.
Whoever uses his car only private, does not need such a high charging speed.
