Jolt Merlinone: Combination of Powerbank and 320 kW quick load column-quick

The Munich start-up Jolt Energy presented the elementary part of its own Milkrun concept in the loading area in August 2019 with the Merlinon Quick Loading Column. In April 2020 then the info that you also want to bring a real mobile load solution for motorsport, automobile manufacturers and event management to start. Jolt Energy succeeds in the form of a quick loading truck, which should be put into operation at the end of 2020. Previously, however, you bring the Jolt Merlinone as a combination of Powerbank and up to 320 kW fast load column to the road.

In the future, you want to start with the expansion of the charging infrastructure through its own mobile DC fast load system Merlinon. The start-up involves the start-up in the current tenders for charging infrastructure. How to understand the company, you have in five big cities in southern Germany on 6. Conveyor call involved, with a circumference of 40 of the mobile energy storage. Furthermore, one is also prepared for European expansion, the sales team is ready and meet “significant interest” of great players, as it means from the company.

The system is to be financed as well as the expansion plans on bonds with a term of four to six years, transformed over a crowdfunding platform to set up a local incentive in financing in the individual cities. It is currently planned that Jolt within 500 days is built 500 Merlinone charging stations in 50 cities.

“Participation in this prestigious Green Tech project creates a positive image and gives the city dwellers the opportunity to actively participate in building their own charging infrastructure. Hurdles of planning, financing and construction interruptions are eliminated.”- Frank Zuck, Jolt Vice President Sales

Jolt Energy understands its own Quick Loading Column Merlin as a kind of power bank for the car: A power store is charged and then – time delayed – deliver this energy to a connected consumer again. This is implemented in practice with a so-called swap system, which was realized together with the Swedish Crane Specialist Hiab. This process should take only five minutes thanks to partial automation. For the company, as well as the complete maintenance is also Jolt responsible.

Looking at the Merlinon one sees that it is a 2.30 meter high, 1.20 meter wide and 1.10 meter low charging system. This was created in cooperation with the specialist ADS-TEC and houses a Powerbank of 200 kWh capacity. The mobile fast charging station can be supplied with electricity in three species: In addition to the pure island operation, for example in network-weak areas, a network connection can also be established. In low voltage connection, the memory acts as the basis for the quick loading process, is loaded via the network and outputs the high charging power. You want to start with a charging power of 160 kW, which should rise to 320 kW later.

  1. Nice idea, but what’s up with the cost? The charging column holds 200 kWh. In island operation, the part is probably in fixed intervals, or when times again for days empty, lasted. Returns and return to the nearby industrial area are a good half hour driving time, plus crane work. This would not cost 50 € now economically, but means minimum € 0.25 / kWh transport supplement. The electricity for loading is not available because not every night an orange low over the republic fails. The investment costs want to be financed through the charging processes. If is seldom loaded, this means a high surcharge per kWh. If it is often loaded, the electricity price rises, which Jolt has to deceive, since you also want to fill your pillar to peak times.

This should hardly be able to operate the leaving solution with ionity prices. In the case of existing power connection, it looks cheaper. Nevertheless, the expensive batteries must be paid by the customer. Bargain prices and Jolt, this combination will never exist.

  2. There will be no more private cars in the modern city of the future. Urbane Millenials already renounce a private car. If I’m still going to the city from the country today, then it’s because I> 2h shopping and / or in the theater / cinema etc. go. Since I will never select and never select a fast adhesive station, but an AC load box to max. 11kW. This will have a reasonable electricity price. I will hardly want to spend 10 minutes next to a DC fast adding station to start the purchase. Such a box has to be just as expensive as if I diesel / gasoline tank. High-speed boxes are needed on the fast roads.

More important is the private AC charging station expansion at home, office, restaurants / hotels etc. This network is already available and only needs to be removed to be desirable. Coupled with ranges of> 300km, this is fully satisfied. I can invite friends or go to friends and always meet a charging station. I can work during the store, go out with friends and I always have a charging station available where the charging process 10s lasts (5s plug in and put out 5s), so no waiting in or next to the car. If the car does not drive then it invites and I enjoy my free time.

  3. @ M.D.: Difficult to predict the behavior of people in the future, but I see that exactly.
I imagine that the ‘normal user’ is 60% at home, 30% at the employer and 10% elsewhere (supermarket, restaurant, hotel). Quick charge I need a few times a year on holiday travel and the like.

  4. I imagine that such a system for events on the green meadow could be interesting. 200kWh does me a little bit.
Three empty Teslas or ID.3S and the station is empty.
Charge it (in the weak network) takes 18 hours at 11kW and 9 hours at 22kW.
I do not quite understand the business concept, but I am also an engineer.
