Test and driving report of the KIA Optima Sportswagon 2.0 GDi plug-in hybrid
Mid-September, a new place to live and a new car for at least two weeks. To be precise the KIA Optima Sportswagon 2.0 GDi plug-in hybrid. Two weeks to take a closer look at the PHEV from KIA, gather experience and prepare it for you and the other readers.
In terms of timing, the Optima Sportswagon as a plug-in hybrid came at just the right time because our move was in full swing. Furniture was of course not transported with it, there are better alternatives for this – even if a lot fits into the 440 liter luggage compartment. But to do appropriate authorities, to drive shortly to the hardware store or to commute to work, the PHEV of KIA was ideal for. But in the next sections more.

On the way in Kia Optima Sportswagon Phev
As you are used to from my other reviews, the test of the KIA Optima Sportswagon 2.0 GDi plug-in hybrid is completely subjective and looks at the plug-in hybrid from my perspective. In doing so, I try to pick up on all the relevant points and also reproduce interesting technical details that I encountered during my two-week test period. If you have any questions, just let me know and I’ll try to answer them.

On the road in the KIA Optima Sportswagon PHEV
In contrast to some other electric cars, which we already have for electric car news.net, the Sportswagon arrived as a PHEV from KIA on its own wheels. He drove up on Monday morning in a flashy Snow White Pearl, which drew the sun’s rays down and reflected them accordingly. A vehicle that makes you want to get in and drive around a little.
Purely electrically, the Optima Sportswagon 2.0 GDi did not find its way to me, the journey was a little too long for that. But the vehicle can cover at least 60 kilometers in everyday use purely electrically. Enough to make the journeys to offices, Bauhaus and work mentioned at the beginning with zero local emissions. According to its own statement, the plug-in version of the Kia station wagon has one of the longest electric ranges among the D-segment hybrid vehicles. With regard to the speed is 120 km / h (purely electrical). You can not exceed in city traffic anyway and for the one, two journeys on the highway completely sufficient. In the combined area, the PHEV brings up to 190 km / h.
Before I deeper into the test report, still a few sentences for the delivery of the Phev of Kia. He was handed over this from a driver who was so probably not to be enjoyed to drive previously electrified vehicles. How else should one explain his beams when he told me that I do not have to be surprised that the car is not or any noise when starting. It is electricity. Nice to see such an enthusiasm that can trigger e-cars and also plug-in hybrids.
Impressions from everyday life with the Kia Optima Sportswagon 2.0 GDI plug-in hybrid
The partially electrified drive variant of the station wagon has adopted the external distinguishing features of the plug-in hybrid version of the sedan. These include the aerodynamically optimized bumpers, side skirts and light-alloy rims as well as unique decorative strips and the “ECO plug-in” logo. It’s probably more noticeable to connoisseurs, not to me, because I didn’t know the pure combustion variant before. However, what I noticed at first glance was that the KIA Optima Sportswagon has endless storage space.
This is made possible by the fact that KIA has cleverly stowed the battery under the luggage compartment floor and integrated it into the vehicle to save space. The luggage compartment alone already has a capacity of 440 liters – up to the lower edge of the window. The three-part rear seat backrest (ratio 40:20:40) means that the luggage compartment can be expanded very variably and has a volume of 1.574 liters. Enough storage space to get everyday items from A to B. Or smaller boxes that have to be transported as part of a move.
In connection with storage space, it should also be mentioned that the charging cable, first aid kit and charging adapter are secured by a corresponding grid in the trunk. Furthermore, our test car had a separating grille for the driving area, which can be easily hung in the upper area of the trunk and thus ensures that luggage does not simply shoot through the interior if you step on the brakes a little harder.
An everyday sedan with that certain something
Elegant, modern and above all extremely stylish. This is how the KIA Optima Sportswagon can be aptly described as a plug-in hybrid. It should be noted that the exterior design of the PHEV has been further aerodynamically optimized with regard to energy efficiency. The active radiator grille, which only opens when necessary and which is optically emphasized even further by a blue line on the underside, should be particularly noticeable. Front and rear bumpers have also been redesigned to help reduce drag.
Partly optical little things, as well as well thought-out details, which usually only become noticeable when driving, or if you consciously deal with them. The charging connection of the partially electrified vehicle also blends inconspicuously into the exterior design. On the driver’s side, in the front area, you will find the charging port. This can only be opened when the vehicle is switched off, so that it can then be charged at a public charging station with an EU standard format charging plug (type 2). Alternatively, the plug-in hybrid can also be charged at a 230-volt household socket – more on this in one of the following sections.
Hybrid technology that knows how to impress
The KIA Optima Sportswagon is powered by a partially electrified drive train, which mobilizes a total output of 151 kW (205 hp). The vehicle’s controls seamlessly switch between the two engines, or combine them to increase joint power delivery. According to the current development status, the combined CO2 emissions are 34 grams per kilometer, the combined fuel consumption is 1.5 liters per 100 kilometers (both values according to NEDC).
The heart of the PHEV is the high-capacity (11.26 kWh) lithium-ion polymer battery, which supplies energy to a 50 kW electric motor. A 2.0-liter gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine is used as the combustion engine. The four-cylinder from the “Nu” series has an output of 115 kW (156 hp) and mobilizes a torque of 189 Nm. As already mentioned, this is coupled to the electric motor, which also serves as a generator and thus enables the generation of electrical energy (recuperation) with which the battery is recharged.
The overall system of combustion engine and electric motor has an output of 151 kW (205 hp, with 6.000 rpm) and a maximum torque of 375 Nm, which is already available at 2nd gear.330 revolutions is available. This combination enables the KIA Optima Sportswagon Plug-in Hybrid to sprint from zero to 100 km/h in 9.7 seconds.
60 kilometers purely electric range in everyday life & charging options of the KIA Optima Sportswagon PHEV
As can already be seen from the type designation of the Optima Sportswagon, this is only a partially electrified vehicle. In other words, it’s not purely electric, but it can at least be charged like an electric vehicle. The built-in 11.3 kWh lithium-ion battery offers enough energy to cover up to 60 kilometers purely electrically in everyday life. Furthermore, the battery of the PHEV is recharged through recuperation while driving. Here, the vehicle makes use of the energy obtained from braking operations.
The power consumption is specified with 12.3 kWh / 100 kilometers, 33 g / km CO2 emissions. Furthermore, the PHEV of KIA is classified in the energy efficiency class A +. The total range of the vehicle is indicated> 700 kilometers. Where you just save the state of the e-battery through appropriate forward-looking driving a little and thus can save energy. If this is still loaded, you can do this thanks to type 2 charging plugs on public charging stations or with the appropriate adapter also on the own 230 volt household socket.
At the household socket, the charging time is around the six hours. On a charging column with type 2 charging plugs we could not load the Kia Optima Sportswagon Phev. According to the technical data sheet, the charging time at a charging station with 3.3 kW output at 240 volts is 190 minutes, i.e. a little over three hours.

The future in driving aids and assistance systems is called Drive Wise, at least when it goes to Kia. Behind them are innovative technologies that provide for more security. Exterior and interior of the Kia Optima Sportswagon Phev in detail
Hopefully, first experiences, described impressions and included photos will give you an impression of the Optima Sportswagon 2.0 GDi plug-in hybrid from KIA. Now let’s dive a little more together and take a closer look at the exterior and interior of KIA’s semi-electrified sedan. First of all, it should be mentioned that I am starting from the test car available to us. This came in the Spirit equipment variant – basic price 45.940.00 euros. Supplemented by metallic paint (170.00 euros) and the leather package “Black” (1.990.00 euros) and thus a total price of 48.100.00 euros.
Exterior: Modern sedan with that certain something
The five-door, five-seater sports station wagon with a self-supporting all-steel body in the color Snow White Pearl conveys an elegant, modern appearance that is impressive. Both in the private and in the business sector. The Sportswagon 2 is a plug-in hybrid.0 GDi to an overall length of 4.855 mm with a width of 2.120 mm (with exterior mirror) and a total height of 1.465mm.
Already mentioned at the beginning, the partially electrified version of the Optima Sportswagon comes with an active radiator grille that is only open when required and the adapted side skirts and rims. All measures to reduce air resistance and increase efficiency. Furthermore, the blue decor in decorations, type designation and logos, which signalize across the industry that I am a hybrid, is particularly noticeable.
Otherwise, the visual appearance of the Sportswagon can certainly be described as distinctive, angular, eye-catching. Leading lines were deliberately emphasized. They look like they are made of one piece and emphasize the liveliness of the PHEV. Rapidly curved flanks, broad shoulders, flowing roof line contribute the rest to the convincing appearance. In comparison with similar models in the same price category, the Optima Sportswagon knows how to convince at first sight, especially us.
The LED headlights (low beam and high beam) should also not be left unmentioned, which set a further accent in the appearance. As well as providing better illumination when driving, as well as reduced energy consumption.
Interior: Elegance, comfort and details that speak for themselves
Inside the PHEV by KIA, the sleek, modern appearance continues. It is above all the small details that speak for themselves and are convincing. As an example, I would like to mention the sun blinds at the back. Which are only minimally noticeable when retracted. Provide enough shade and/or privacy in direct sunlight by simply pulling up. Just an inconspicuous little thing that knows how to convince. The same applies to charging connections in the rear – in the form of a USB charging socket and 12-volt socket – which can be found at the rear of the tunnel console.

For the driver is in the cockpit but above all the special instrument unit of interest. This offers all important information about the drive system, from the state of charge of the battery to the fuel efficiency of the current driving style. The interfaces Android Auto ™ and Apple CarPlay ™ can be integrated the driver’s smartphone. And the multimedia service Kia Connected Services, which also includes the navigation system and which is provided by TomTom, offers real-time traffic information, the search for regional information as well as weather reports.
Especially with regard to the navigation system, it should be noted that this has proven to be particularly user-friendly in practice. Completely intuitive, understandable and well presented. Unfortunately not an everyday occurrence in many vehicles. An inductive charging station for smartphones is also available in the KIA Optima Sportswagon 2.0 GDi plug-in hybrid.
Our test car also came with the optional “Black” leather package. This ensures that the leather interior comes in black with leather seat contact surfaces. The passenger seat is now also 8-way electrically adjustable, with 2-way electrically adjustable lumbar support, seat ventilation (cooling and warming) at the front and seat heating at the rear for the outer seats. In addition to the ventilated front seats, the heated steering wheel in particular caused enthusiasm. Glad to see when the weather can’t quite decide whether it’s summer or autumn.
Multifunction steering wheel, Bluetooth hands-free system, USB and AUX connections are now standard in this price range and therefore do not have to be missed with the Optima Sportswagon. With regard to the energy efficiency of the vehicle, the two-zone automatic climate control cannot go unmentioned. This allows the driver and passenger side to be heated differently. If necessary, the driver can switch off the air conditioning on the passenger side completely, for example if he is driving alone.
A look at the specifications of the KIA Optima Sportswagon PHEV
We have already taken a look at the stately dimensions of the Optima Sportswagon. And yet it doesn’t come across as too bulky, and thanks to the corresponding intelligent parking system (SPAS), it fits into “normal” parking spaces without any problems. The vehicle with a total length of 4.855 mm with a width of 2.120 mm (with exterior mirror) and a total height of 1.465 mm brings it to an unladen weight of 1.815-1.880kg. And a permissible total weight of 2.270kg. The maximum payload in this case is 455 kg. The turning circle is given as 10.90 meters.

But here too, simply charge overnight, then you won’t notice anything and can start driving again in the morning. The top speed of the vehicle is specified as 120 km/h purely electrically. In combination with the combustion engine, the PHEV can reach a top speed of 190 km/h.
The CO2 emission, combined, is the KIA Optima Sportswagon 2.0 GDi PHEV specified at 33 g/km. The e-car consumes an average of 12.3 kWh combined per 100 kilometers, or 1.5 liters/100 km. In practice, of course, these differ according to the individual driving style of each individual. I have added further interesting technical data of the e-vehicle in the form of clear tables.

If the previous impressions of the KIA Optima Sportswagon PHEV have convinced you, then it’s probably time to take a look at the prices. We also don’t want to ignore the support provided by the environmental bonus for the plug-in hybrid.
The electric car purchase premium was introduced on 18.05.Adopted in the cabinet in 2016. The actual purchase premium varies in this case. For example, buyers of purely battery-powered vehicles receive a subsidy of 4.000 euros, drivers of a hybrid vehicle with an electric motor and a combustion engine receive a bonus of 3.000 €. With hybrid vehicles, the decisive factor is whether they can be charged at the socket. In the case of KIA’s plug-in hybrid, there are 3.000 euros environmental bonus.

Conclusion on the test of the Optima Sportswagon plug-in hybrid from KIA
Everything has an end at some point. This also applies to testing the Optima Sportswagon as a plug-in hybrid. It’s a pity really, as this has turned out to be the ideal companion in everyday life. An electric range that is perfectly adequate for most everyday journeys. Sophisticated design, both inside and out, as well as cargo volume, which is prepared for all everyday situations. You don’t have to accept any compromises with regard to the assistance systems either.
Opinions will only differ on the price. And here it is that everyone has to decide for themselves whether the from 41.940.00 euros starting list prices in the Attract equipment are justified or not. Our test car definitely convinced me.
