A compact car to 100 has seldom been that fast. An Audi show car with 525 hp even makes a Porsche 911 look old when it starts at traffic lights. It has so much power that a spoiler helps when braking.

S.End, end, end, over: Audi no longer wants to be demonstrated by BMW and Mercedes and is now striking back. After Munich and Stuttgart stole the show from the A3 with the 306 hp M235i and the 360 ​​hp CLA 45 AMG grenade and even the supposedly picky Golf R with its 300 hp reached the level of the last RS3, the gentlemen of the rings are now leaving the muscles flex and bring the balance of power in the compact class with an A3 Clubsport Concept a lot mixed up.

The showpiece, which will celebrate its world premiere at the GTI meeting on Lake Worthersee at the end of the month, not only breaks the 400, but also the 500 hp mark, making even the vast majority of Porsches look damn old.

The sports sedan is set in motion by the five-cylinder turbo, which is much loved by the fans and which is also used in the TT RS in its most powerful configuration to date. However, where there is no more than 360 hp, the Bavarians saddle up another 50 percent with a larger loader and more pressure and thus come to the fabulous value of 525 hp.

At the same time, the maximum torque rises to 600 Newton meters and, together with the befitting Quattro drive and a power-to-weight ratio of just 2.9 kilograms per hp, enables performance that has so far hardly been dreamed of in the compact class: the blue accelerates from 0 to 100 Blitz therefore in 3.6 seconds.

Thunderbird with perfect drift

This not only takes 1.2 seconds from the BMW and 0.9 seconds from the Mercedes. But even a Porsche 911 suddenly looks damn old with its 4.1 seconds at best for the Carrera 4S and in the new Lamborghini Huracan (3.2 seconds) you have to put in a lot of effort if you want to beat the show car.

The Audi developers did not find the quick start alone enough. That is why they promise crazy curve dynamics for the thunderbird and rely on wheel-selective torque control for perfect drift and let it run up to 310 km / h at full throttle – the CLA 45 and M235i are very, very small in the rearview mirror.

And of course Bayern have come up with something for braking. To tame the power, they not only rely on carbon discs in the distinctive 21-inch rims, but also screw an air brake onto the boot lid: when the driver steps into the iron, the spoiler turns vertically into the wind in seconds and thus shortens the braking distance from 250 km / h by twelve meters.

In addition to the powerful drive, the tight chassis and the light body, there is a design that is flashy by Audi standards, which should be entirely to the taste of the GTI fans at Lake Worthersee. From the side, except for the Audi rings embossed in the sheet metal, the sedan tears open its carbon-framed radiator throat as if it wanted to devour its competitors.

Show car with series potential

And when they have really been turned through the wolf, they come out of the arm-thick tailpipes to the left and right of the mighty diffuser. Incidentally, together with a sound that should not be less spectacular: If the intake and exhaust system are designed for maximum throughput, the hot rhythm of the five-cylinder turns into an angry hiss that lets the Worthersee boil.

There’s just one more thing to say that small notchback sedans are lame, boring and stuffy.

Officially, the Clubsport Concept is just a study. But Ulrich Hackenberg, head of development at VW, who has returned to Ingolstadt, believes that most of his showpieces have made it onto the streets.

Hackenberg admits that the Bavarians are going to the limit with this show car in terms of power, dynamics, sound and design. But at the same time he wants to show "how much sporting potential there is in the A3 family." So if that is not a hint of the next RS3 – maybe not with 525 hp. But then a four will definitely be in front.
