Inside, everything is typically Mercedes. Whoever should look for the selector lever for the automatic in the center tunnel – it is located where the windshield wiper is in other cars.

A test car with the registration number S-EK can be a maximum provocation, especially if it is a Mercedes. There is no place for excitement. The business limousine also offers home-style cooking.

GIs there a greater provocation than driving a brand new Mercedes E-Class through a large urban district with a high proportion of precarious workers? No problem if the Benz under the star on the polished hood also has a Stuttgart license plate with the letters S-EK. "Special task force? What do they want here? ”It says excitedly when the test sedan with the type designation E 400 turns the corner.

On the way to the zoo you feel in this Mercedes as if you are sitting in a cage yourself. Alone: The whole excitement is astonishing. From the outside, the E-Class still has something petty bourgeois about it, even if the current W212 series has undergone a makeover.

Most new implants are easily overlooked (except for the distinctive nose), which could be a calculation like the unmistakable Golf: The E-Class is a classic that has sold over 13 million times in 60 years, even if purists have the type W120 from 1953 does not call it an E-Class. He will continue to be certain of a regular place at the taxi stands and in the company parking lots of the Dax companies.

The technical changes, on the other hand, are so extensive and expensive that they were only given to the sedan and the station wagon. The Cabriolet and Coupe continue to drive almost unchanged in their familiar guise. Mercedes has invested a lot in the facelift. The renovation of the upper middle class is said to have cost one billion euros with the aim of making up for the gap in the competition with the Audi A6 / A7 and BMW 5/6-series.

Help for negligent drivers

Obviously, Mercedes doesn’t want to push its loyal customers too roughly into the digital age. The car is packed with state-of-the-art driving aids such as the Intersection Assistant Plus, which detects crossing traffic and assists the driver when braking. A 360-degree camera is installed behind the windshield, which can record what is happening on the road, in a space of at least 50 and a maximum of 500 meters.

Mercedes thinks a lot of the new Active Lane Keeping Assist, which not only recognizes when the driver is careless and leaves the lane, but also counter-steers and, if necessary, brakes if a collision with oncoming traffic threatens. The E-Class performs the same functions in slow-moving traffic, a further step on the way to independent driving.

There is also a sophisticated LED halogen lighting system that does not dazzle oncoming traffic. But the ignition key is a bizarre anachronism. To start it, it has to be dug out of the jacket like 20 years ago, pushed into a slot and then turned over.

Key against progress

While every small car driver has recently been pushing a button to start, the Benz driver has to be finger-ready. This is annoying and has nothing of the smooth action of a special task force. You can also interpret it differently: the key as a bastion against progress and reminiscence of the Benz driver with the toilet roll on the parcel shelf.

For free. The V6 twin-turbo gasoline engine in the tested E 400, which has a displacement of just 3.0 liters, drives the almost 1.7-ton car with high torque and low vibration. The sprint from zero to one hundred takes place in a remarkable 5.3 seconds, at a speed of 250 the electronics put an end to the acceleration.

All engines are combined with a start-stop system, with the exception of the entry-level models E 200 and the diesel versions E 200 CDI, E 220 CDI and E 250 CDI, the automatic 7G-Tronic transmission takes care of the power transmission in all models.

Good overview, large trunk

It is a very useful and fine invention. The automatic system learns and adapts its shift pattern to the driver’s driving behavior: late gear changes if he prefers an aggressive driving style, earlier if he takes it slower.

The driving behavior never seems restless or badly balanced, as the chassis is a successful compromise between comfort and sportiness. The trunk, almost 540 liters, is great, and it’s easy to load too. The body and the interior offer a good overview.

Mercedes says the new E-Class is cheaper than the old one when you factor in all the assistance systems that are now part of it. So far, some of them have been reserved for the higher-positioned S-Class. The price list for the six petrol and six diesel models starts at 40,430 euros, which is actually just a little more than the cheapest predecessor.

Even in its new look, the E-Class is a car for the upper middle class and has therefore remained true to itself.

Mercedes E 400, 333 hp, rear-wheel drive, top speed 250 km / h. Base price 56,000 euros, standard consumption 7.9l / 100 km, in the test 8.9 liters.
