The Lynk & Co brand doesn’t really want to sell their first electric SUV 01, but rather rent it out on a monthly basis. The concept is always interesting, especially since the plug-in hybrid completed the test with ease and was pleasantly surprised.

Just 1.800 Lynk & Co 01 are currently driving around in Germany. The car is an E-Xot, during our test phase we were repeatedly approached by passers-by. Most people ask us if the brand comes from Sweden, after all our test car has Swedish license plates. The interested party is not entirely wrong, after all, Lynk & Co. a Swedish-Chinese joint venture that belongs to the large Geely group, which also includes Polestar, Volvo and Lotus. The design department is actually in Gothenburg, Sweden, and the car is produced in China on the CMA platform, on which the Volvo XC40 is also based. And so in this country the Volvo dealerships take over the service for the Lynk stranger. We tested the plug-in hybrid version for three weeks and were repeatedly surprised at how mature the car looked.

Our conclusion: Old Swede – he can do something!

"Bra gjort!’ we would say if we could speak Swedish. In German: Well done! While we initially feared that the 01 might have as many teething problems as the Aiways U5, we soon breathed a sigh of relief. The 01 looks mature, with very few signs of the brand still being young. One of the reasons for this is that it is based on the Volvo platform on which the XC40 is also built. That it is a disguised Volvo – we do not think so. In addition, it is different in terms of look and feel.

The PHEV is already very visually received, after all, it is reminiscent of a Porsche Macan at least from the front. The workmanship is top notch, in large parts even high quality, the SUV drives extremely pleasantly and scores with features that are not available in a price range of around 40.000 euros are by no means a matter of course. In addition, the purely electric range of around 70 kilometers speaks for the Lynk 01, but only if the speed and temperatures are right. We see room for improvement in terms of fuel and power consumption and the lame charging capacity of just 3.7 kW. Lynk should also fix the gas leak at 95 km/h, while the higher noise level from around 130 km/h is still bearable.

The concept of all-inclusive rental is nothing new, but the market for so-called “subscription car” providers is huge (you can find a selection here). However, the idea of renting the car is new and thus bringing in part of its rent back in. This is still in its infancy, the car has not been widespread so far. So don’t expect to be able to significantly reduce your rent in the near future.

Lynk & Co 01: price, monthly rent and the idea of sharing

The Lynk & Co 01 costs 42 in its PHEV variant.000 euros before funding, if you have no charging options, there is a full hybrid variant for 35.000 euros available, which is not funded. This puts the 01 on the same level as a well-equipped Cupra Formentor, but offers more space and some exciting extras, such as ongoing software updates over the air and the ability to share the car with the Lynk community. More on that later.

Instead of buying the car, according to the company, 98 percent of Lynk decides&Co-customers for the monthly rent. This is certainly due to the marketing of the car – Lynk & Co primarily advertises with the rental model. Similar to other subscription models from Finn, Cluno, nextmove & Co. rent the 01 at a fixed price per month – including all ancillary costs, excluding refueling and charging. Specifically, the Lynk 01 is available for 500 euros a month. Whether you rent it for just one month or twelve – the price stays the same (and is exceptional among the car-by-subscription providers).

That sounds like a lot of money, but such long-term rentals are always more expensive than leasing. The reason is a) the high flexibility and b) the inclusive services such as insurance, tax, suitable tires, service etc. If you look at similar PHEV SUVs from the car-by-subscription providers, you will notice that the Lynk & Co 01 is actually quite inexpensive. Another big advantage compared to leasing is the quick availability. lynch &Although Co does not manage to achieve the self-imposed goal of only 2 days until the customer receives his 01, four weeks are currently realistic. For comparison: With many leasing offers you have to wait well over half a year. And this also makes it possible to quickly identify an ideal target group: customers who need to bridge a period of time with a car. Be it because they are waiting for their new car, be it because they only need a car seasonally, be it because they have a longer stay away from home where they need a car. And so Site met another Lynk-01 user during the test, for example, who had booked the car until he got his Tesla Model Y.

Back to the rental model. The sharing function, with which Lynk customers can (theoretically) reduce their monthly rent, is unique. The Lynk subscriber offers his car to other users via an app or a function directly in the car. These can be friends, family members, but also complete strangers – the main thing is that they are members of the Lynk community. The subscriber determines the hourly price, and a commission is then paid to Lynk. Main tenants and interim sharers are fully insured, the smartphone becomes the key, so it is not necessary to hand over the car in person.

The sub-rental only has to take four photos of the car before and after the rental. Both parties also rate themselves afterwards. All of this sounds like meaningful use, after all, according to a study by the Federal Ministry of Transport, the car is only moved daily for 45 minutes. But the plan is not quite open: the Lynk network is still too small. At the time in February 2022 we found three 01 owners willing to divide in Munich, in Berlin it was about ten-too little to attract customers or to borrow a car for an hour as a Lynk member if you first drive across the city got to.

Lynk & Co 01: range, shop, consumption

Lynk & Co specifies 14.1 kWh as usable battery sizes, we pumped 16.82 kWh in the empty 01 (for comparison: With the Cupra Formentor Hybrid it was 10.4 kWh). We don’t manage the manufacturer’s specifications according to WLTP in terms of range: Instead of 69 kilometers, after a motorway trip at around 0 degrees and 120 km/h, the speedometer only shows 42 kilometers. That is a juicy 40 kW per 100 kilometers – too much! It is not certain whether it is due to poor energy management or the 1.9 tons of empty weight.

In the event of mixed traffic through the city and across the country, we came around the 50 kilometers purely electrically in winter at around 0 degrees and 20 degrees interior temperature. However, many users report that at mild temperatures they also reach the specified WLTP range or even overflowed.

The consumption values in hybrid mode of 1.4 liters, the Lynk &Co. Specified, as always, there are fairy tale values unless they only cover short distances and load extremely disciplined. Otherwise, the value should level off at around 5 liters, as I said: depending on how far your routes are and how often you charge.

If the battery is empty, the 01 is thirsty: 9.54 liters of Super he demanded on our autobahn lap at GPS-calibrated 130 km/h per 100 kilometers. That is significantly more than, for example, the Cupra Formentor with 7.2 liters or the Toyota Rav4 PHEV with 8.2 liters.

On the wall box, the 01 needs a good 4.5 hours to charge its battery from 0 to 100 percent, the maximum charging capacity here is 3.6 kW. With 2.6 kW at the household socket, it is accordingly more than five hours.

Lynk & Co 01 : Engine, HP, driving dynamics and a sudden acceleration hole

The 01 is extremely pleasant: Smooth purrs the Chinese Swede across the streets, practically nothing brings him out of rest. The adaptive cruise control does its job well and recognizes the traffic signs correctly in most cases. The autobahn assistant, which stays in lane very comfortably, recognizes the distance to the vehicle in front and adjusts the speed correctly, is extremely relaxing. All you have to do is keep your hands lightly on the steering wheel, and the car does the rest. The front-wheel drive pushes the combined 261 hp from 0 to 100 in 8 seconds – not a great achievement, but perfectly adequate for most situations. The 01 manages up to 210 km/h, but has to overcome an acceleration gap that suddenly occurs at 95 km/h. Tip: If you overtake at this speed, switch the driving mode to "Power" to avoid this phenomenon in pure combustion mode.

Strong performance that Lynk & Co shows here! The infotainment system on the 12.7 -inch display is extremely understandable. A home screen plus – with a swipe to the left – two more screens with apps. A center home button takes you one step back.

There are also useful tactile buttons, for example to control the air conditioning or the volume. The voice control understands our voice commands, such as addresses, very well right away. There is also wireless Apple Airplay and Android Auto – the cell phone is stored in an induction tray underneath.

If you want to charge your cell phone in the classic way, you can also do this via a USB and a USB-C port under the center armrest. And if you are too lazy to press the key for voice control, then simply call "Hey, Frank"-confusingly she then addresses a women’s voice in a slight Mickey Mouse manner.

In addition to games and a recording function, where you can send suggestions for improvement to Lynk & Co, the infotainment system even has a dashcam feature to not only create exterior shots, but also to film the driver’s interior – let’s start with Carpool Karaoke! The cockpit, the instrument panel – everything can be operated very intuitively via the multifunction steering wheel.

Amenities such as a memory function in the driver’s seat or a separate WLAN are also not a matter of course for the price range. If you look for the hair in the soup, you will find it, for example, in the passenger seat that can only be adjusted manually or in the missing head-up display.

Model choice, space and a huge panoramic roof

Anyone who is a configuration fetishist will get nothing from the Lynk & Co 01. You only have the choice whether you take the 01 as a PHEV or full hybrid, whether you like blue or black better and whether you need a trailer coupling – that’s it. We did not miss configuration options, the car already offers an extremely lavish equipment for the price range.

With a length of 4.5 meters, the 01 provides a lot of space. If you sit comfortably in the front, the legroom on the back seat is particularly noticeable – according to Lynk & Co it is 1 meter in the best case. And the ceiling height also invites giants to travel in comfort. The huge panorama roof, which can not only be partially opened, but also has a headliner, is also very successful. It all seems very fermented.

The trunk with automatic flap, which is provided with a large rubber mat, offers 466 liters of space, it can then be folded down 1.213 liters-that is around 100 to 300 liters less than with comparable SUVs, such as VO Toyota RAV 4 plug-in hybrid or from the executor Skoda Enyaq and VW ID.4. It does not appear to be small. Stow the cable stuff under the trunk floor, which is not always the most practical solution in everyday life when you have loaded the trunk. Unfortunately there is no frunker.

  1. I agree, …
-Lynk should also fix the gas hole at 95 km/h, while the higher noise level can still be saved from around 130 speed.- … because you shouldn’t drive faster than 130 anyway, right? Or can’t, if you don’t want the range to melt.
