MAN is expanding the Munich plant into a lead plant for electric trucks-expanding

With a three-digit million investment, the truck manufacturer MAN wants to expand its main plant in the north of Munich into a lead plant for electric trucks. “We will invest a mid-three-digit million amount in Munich for the conversion and the planned ramp-up of production of e-trucks by around the middle of the decade,” announced the new MAN boss Alexander Vlaskamp in the local newspaper Merkur. At the same time, this should secure the location and the jobs there in the long term.

In addition to the Munich location, the Nuremberg plant is also to be upgraded for electromobility. MAN has been manufacturing engines there so far, and batteries are also to be assembled there in the future, as reported by Merkur. Preparations for e-mobility have been underway at the Munich plant for some time: employees at the e-mobility center there have been preparing for the series production of electric vehicles since last summer.

In addition to electric drives, the research and development department, also in Munich, will increasingly deal with autonomous driving functions. According to Vlaskamp, the first test drives, still with a test driver who can intervene in an emergency, should take place in the first half of the year.

During the talks, Vlaskamp countered speculation that the Munich site could become less important given the ongoing restructuring program and the partial relocation of production from Munich to the Polish MAN plant in Krakow. “Munich will continue to be our headquarters,” assured the new MAN boss. Accordingly, the workforce of 7,500 employees in Munich agreed with the employees, which is to be achieved by 2023, will remain. A good 8,000 people are still working at the MAN main plant. The around 500 jobs that will be lost are to be cut in a socially responsible manner, primarily through natural fluctuation and partial retirement.
