Things seem to be moving in the direction of electromobility, and not just in the passenger car sector. Because after Daimler, MAN Truck & Bus has now also announced that it wants to produce purely electric commercial vehicles. At the Commercial Vehicles IAA 2016 in Hanover, the company is presenting the TGS tractor unit with electric drive, which is primarily designed for inner-city operation.
This has been optimized for use with a city semi-trailer. All in all, the concept vehicle offers a lot of loading volume with a low dead weight and is free of emissions (CO2, NOx, noise). A range of 150 kilometers is to be guaranteed by the use of a 250 kW electric motor, which transmits its 2700 Nm of torque to the rear axle via a cardan shaft. The three 35.3 kWh lithium-ion batteries, which are arranged under the driver’s cab above the front axle, where the diesel engine is located in conventional vehicles, are certainly decisive for this range.
The weight saving due to the omission of the conventional diesel engine compensates for the additional weight of the electric drive components, so that according to MAN the vehicle has the same payload as a comparable conventional tractor unit. If the range of 150 kilometers is not enough, MAN gives you the option of using additional batteries mounted on the side of the frame – plus max. 4×35.3 kWh – and/or a range extender or fuel cell mounted on the side of the frame to increase this. With the eTruck study exhibited at the IAA, MAN wants to carry out further tests in the area of electrically powered trucks and to gather experience with specific transport concepts. Electric trucks are to become part of MAN’s product range from 2021.

Ranges of more than 1000 km are completely normal, even with today’s battery technology. As early as 2025, even the largest trucks will only have to charge their batteries at the end of the route when loading and unloading the goods to be transported.
