Basically, it was clear before: Mazda would do it again this time. Special ways with technical finesse have always identified the philosophy in Hiroshima. Thus, the Japanese of Wankel technology offered a home, in the reciprocating engine they compacted the gasoline extremely high, the diesel extremely low – and finally made the Skyactiv X engine, which combines the principles of both systems for everyday use by compression ignition.

So now you have put an electric car on the wheels at Mazda. Not for the first time, but for the first time right. Although the ex 005 of 1970 was from today’s perspective, but did not come out about the stage of a prototype at that time. And yes: Of course you also drive with the MX-30 in the best sense next to the track.

May others put on ever heavier batteries and on larger ranges – in Hiroshima they believe in the idea of “rightsizing”: not lush, but proper 200 kilometers radius, but also a smaller – and significantly cheaper – battery. The goal: the “CO2 backpack”, which lasts on every E-car to keep as small as possible. From the raw materials to lower power consumption due to the lower weight.

In the end it is the opening to the middle. The between saving and span, between the environment and space, between responsibility and ego. But because most of all drive almost 200 kilometers per day (in the city it may be 265 km through the high recuperation), they do not really have something.

What you win is a car that opens elsewhere to the center – with opposing doors as reminiscence to the RX-8. In the SUV area a real force. Also a tribute to the own story: In addition to recycling plastic can be found in the interior surfaces from cork. Exactly for the processing of this material, Mazda was founded 100 years ago.

Together with the coupe-like roof and the strong shoulders, the MX-30 is a real eye-catcher. The place in the rear ensures some humility for larger inmates, and you can not get out when the front door is closed – but otherwise you have a lot of space in well-insulated environment. With full seating, 366 liters of cargo space remain folded up, it’s almost 1.2 cubic meters.

The cockpit irritates a little bit because there is no more analogue there next to digital instruments, and the display is flattened flattening over the dashboard. As is fantane, Mazda shows the center console, which, on the one hand, houses the large touchscreen of climate control and, on the other, the imposing powerful selector lever. Only the USB sockets are a little hidden.

For propulsion, an electric motor with 145 hp at the front axle feeds from a 35.5 kWh thick lithium-ion battery. That’s enough for a standard spurt under ten seconds and pace 140 on the highway – at the test drive it was even 148. Smart: The energy when delaying can be recovered by steering wheel paddles in five steps. So you can sail as needed or brake when puck.

Great class is Mazda‘s youngest in terms of handling. That because of the small battery low weight of 1.65 tonnes also contributes to how tight coordination and smart electronics. It ensures a kind of artificial brake, through which more weight on the front axle loaded on the corner input. After the vertex comes through minimal acceleration pressure to the rear. Together this ensures grip, traction and joy. The similarity of the name with the Roadster icon MX-5 is quite no coincidence.

Who succumbed too often to this temptation, and be it because of the artificial motor sound, of course the official 19 kWh is not close to 100 kilometers (WLTP). However, values below 17 are also extrortic with some discipline. Either way is the juice at some point. Then 40 minutes at the quick charging station bring the battery to 80 percent, on the wallbox lasts the complete filling scarce five hours, on the domestic socket half a day.

The prices for the First Edition of the Mazda MX-30 start at 33.134 euros. Less all subsidies are underground but merely 23.654 euros. This is not more expensive than a comparable CX-3 – and an argument less against electromobility. Who does not destroy the hard transition so completely – early 2022 comes a version with Range Extender. A small gasoline engine that charges the battery if necessary. It is, of course: a Wankel.

  1. 200 km range you can not make good texts. Since no one is emptying his vehicle up to the last movable charge carrier but with regard to the availability of loading points at 50km residual range, this is a sanction radius of 75 km in the very best case. In winter then 40 km.
That for 25.000 Euro after promotion.
That may be completely sufficient for some but that’s the classic third car for the drive to pedicure or plenty cat food shop.
I believe that the customer circle, which gouts something is very small.

The E-Honda sold this year in Norway so far 66x – at 48.000 BEV approvals as a whole.
This is a market share of 0.11%
Since the design of the Mazda is not so exciting, I see the car at 0.05% – rather less

If that is the Mazda claim. Well. But the energy transition and the spread of BEV does not progress it.

  2. From the point of view of resource conservation I do not find a small battery so bad. That’s why I drive Ioniq. But he has the advantage that he consumed little. Unfortunately, Mazda has to do his homework. Pity

  3. I drove the MX-30 Sxhon in July in the pre-series model and ordered him directly afterwards. There are enormously many plus points I do not like to enumerate. Negative can be at most of the short space in the fund UMD the opposite doors (taste matter). I have at the test drive in the city and temporary full throttle.a bundess road under 15 kW / 100km used. Full everyday use for our future second car!

  4. Sorry. Dear Mr. Wolfgang Plank

The Reicher is more important than you believe it. At 200 km you will not get far. Sure you can stop and load. 30-50 minutes …only make a few and buy. A range of approx. 500-600 km is important. Gave a current survey!!

  5. Why only an e-SUV again?
High flanks = high price = good margin, or what?
Apparently, we should all be convinced that lower types of air with low air resistance are outdated (brings only reach, but is boring). Probably because we are now all pensioners and otherwise no longer come up. Or because we are supposed to be in mortal danger when we are flattened under louder T-rexes.
Have lost sight of the designers that efficiency should / be the main feature of e-mobility?
The only convincing at the Mazda is in my eyes of the smaller because cheaper battery. You would have put that better in a classic combination. The dignity would make much more meaning as a family coach for the suburb.

  6. SUV is being built as it is bought. Since you can understand Mazda already.
But with 200km range it is already a second car short. Not daily, but more often. In that is enough to stop one of the purchase. Finally, you pay more than a comparable combustion and has disadvantages. The whole despite violent subsidy.
Incidentally, efficiency and slow driving (like boundary to 140) also at the burner is quite good. Only no one wants to be some sexy.

  7. Me convinced the concept of Mazda, because typical e-car buyers live in the bacongurteln, have a garage with loading opportunity and drive almost never long-distance. Therefore, unnecessary large batteries in a CTG consideration are almost irresponsible, unless you offer a modular battery concept like VW (but Herrje, who is interested in the CO2 balance in production, power generation and recycling?). The “An argument less against electromobility” I can not leave in the other not uncommented: 9000 euros are a massive, ideologically justified market intervention. Often enough people buy themselves an electric car, because it does not hurt them financially, they can shop at home and often have a conventional vehicle in the hindquarters. You have all the occasion to laugh in the maestras, a classic entrainment effect. Less desire people can not play there. This will take revenge if at some point the E-Auto Promotion remains and conventionally powered small, inexpensive cars are barely in the market. A Mitsubishi Space Star gets new for 7500 euros, it is one of the last of its kind.

  8. 200km real reach are sufficient for many purposes.
But I disturbs the low charging power. 40 minutes for 28.4kWh (80% of 35.5) are 42kW. This is at the Quick Loading Column is not very good for a 2020 model. For comparison: Tesla creates 100kW or approx. 25 minutes for 250km.

  9. Series honest report that shows the weaknesses and but also a few good arguments. The latter are unlikely to be hard to use a circular engine for battery charging again.

  10. Both the Mazda MX30 as well as BSPW. The Ionic of Hyundai are M.M.n. Optically quite appealing vehicles. But honestly: for a full replacement of the “family car”, which is always available for spontaneous occasions and unforeseen trips must always be quite apart from urgent business appointments or longer vacation trips with children – the ranges are indisputable too low. Very too bad, because right with regard to the efficiency of the ionic he would be the first choice with a larger battery for me. For people who depend on public charging options, but living in an area with absolutely underdeveloped loading infrastructure, the (then often necessary) ways, or. Distances to the next loading option are still deducted from the already scared range. This is just for the no problem that will have your diesel in the garage next to your e-car with mini area range. Then rather a bigger battery!

  11. For the Japanese / Asian market, a suitable car is intended for me personally: a hybrid that does not live up to my applications. Basically, two scenarios prevail in our family, as probably with most Germans:

    1. Short, regular ways to work, for shopping, clubs, etc. – Volume: Ca. 120 km / day, top speed: maximum 130 km / h, main road. That would actually fit ..

Only: For this I do not need a senior bomber, on the contrary: I almost only have disadvantages and I’m better with a smaller car, as it covers the same field, but is much cheaper. And myself my “huge dog” fits with 82 cm withers still easily in the (small) zoe. With significantly more range, mind you!

    2. Long paths to the annoying relationship: I have the advantage of living relatively centrally in Germany, so that the Baggage can be reached in a 300 km radius around me – for which the Zoe (just) would be enough. Better – and dear – of course, would be 500 km range, because it is just rare loading infrastructure, so I always expect to come back with a “filling” back and forth. But ok, the problem might disappear in the long term. Remain that I still in section approx. 240 – 270 km must create. That’s z. B. with the Zoe just right, with the Mazda: Not. Very important disadvantage.

The disadvantages that still have a (favorable) E-vehicle for me also remain:
    – only 130 – 140 km / h, what happened (maybe) “soon” (speedimy).
    – cheap (st) processing. And everyone can tell me what he wants, but in a zoe, Mazda etc. rattles and craccllanced everything, while in (m) an E-Class, even C-Class, is still resting at 220 km / h.

  12. Mazda‘s argument “smaller battery, less weight”, however, mutates badly after hohn. Or after hybris. Other cars with significantly more battery are not harder. Even significantly larger cars such as the model 3 weigh with a 75 battery hardly more – and with a 50er even less.

A 30s battery is even for second cars. The values of Gattin (or whoever) finally wants to visit friends or family, or make a trip – and there are 100km action radius on the highway really the lower limit. With such a small battery it says then “swap cars”, which spontaneously possibly. not possible.

Nevertheless, we have a MX-30 for 2 years ago.
why? Because he is cheap and no one wants to drive more burners.

Because everything else is either very much more expensive in the small budget area or offers significantly less car for the money or miserable long delivery times.

The MX-30 is amazingly cheap and immediately available in short-term leasing. Despite Christmas and New Year’s Eve and Corona, between “Okay, pack us a” and pick up only 3 weeks – and at 175 € leasing rate for a lush first edition.

The whole thing in the hope that in 2 years an aptera, a sion or a compact Tesla will be to be purchased. As long as you can arrange with this semi-yarn compromise – at least everything is better than to drive burners.
