Your next petrol or diesel may be the last. Site shows in a new series which conventional cars in the affordable price segment are a real recommendation-from fun makers to the discount family carriage. Today: Mazda MX-5.
Place for two, the sun in view and the wind in the hair – roadsters are simply awesome. It is all the more incomprehensible that the electric industry is consistently saved according to the Tesla Roadster of this vehicle segment. The next Tesla Roadster is delayed further and further back and concepts such as the VW electric beach buggy remain exactly that: concepts without chance for serial realization. So why shouldn’t your last burner be a roadster? Part three of our series presents the Mazda MX-5, which, whether new or used, has what it takes to be a classic and despite the petrol engine does not even eat your hair off your head.
Mazda MX-5: The perfect formula
"Jinbai Ittai" Mazda calls the unit of the vehicle and driver (actually of "Horse and rider), and rarely, a company’s PR saying was as close to the truth as here. You sit very close to the asphalt with the rear part, body -hugging in a cuddly, yet tight seat, the small steering wheel has perfectly in your hand and the short switching stick within optimal handle.
Mazda It started: Mazda MX-5 of the first generation (Na) from 1989
Not only this feeling has retained the Mazda since its very first generation with the goblins. The ingenious light cover that can be opened and closed while driving on the right hand has remained still. Access, pull and lock them on the handle – the sun comes in or the rain stays outside. The sun flashes out behind the clouds? Simply apply the three steps in opposite order, it takes barely 7 seconds. Who needs heavy, susceptible electrical ceiling, which mostly only work at walking pace anyway?
Press Inform / Mazda The Mazda MX-5 is still a purebred roadster.
Even when driving, a lot has changed in handling and the precision of the MX-5, but nothing has changed in the fascination. The original was light -footed and agile, apart from the spongy steering. Today it is just as accurate and crisp as the six-speed manual transmission with its ultra-shorts. With just one ton of empty weight and the deep focus, the Japanese is optimally positioned.
184 PS? Less goes in the Mazda too
Under the hood worked on our test car of the "size" Petrol engine with two liters of displacement and 135 kW / 184 hp power, but without turbo loading you have to feed the Mazda four-cylinder with high speeds so that you can also extend the advantage of the stronger unit. Because for quick cornering, the 1.6-liter engine in the basic model is sufficient. However: that with the MX-5 2.0 Skyactiv-G standard blocking differential ensures an even better traction, especially if the road is a little wet or uneven.

If you not only get the MX-5 for cruising, but also for quick driving, you should keep an eye on the sports package. For 1900 there are sports seats and a cathedral strut in the engine compartment that makes the long front car even more torsion. Now only keep the engine with a good mood and with every step on the pedal, enjoy the motor sound accompanied by a strong but Japanese, but Japanese, with which the rear wheels push the roadster into every curve – and just as confidently out again.
Mazda The short -cut roadster feels immediately familiar after entry
With all the fun of driving, the Japanese also forgives the tightness in the cockpit, the lack of shelves and the small trunk, which only swallows the small luggage for the short trip for two in two ways. At least you don’t have to do without the coffee, provided that you have put the separate cup holder in the center console. You also have to do without some modern assistance systems in Mazda’s legendary driving machine.33.The MX-5 costs 990 euros with 184 hp petrol engine (basic model 29.990 euros), so he is not a cheap pleasure. But the selection of Roadstern outside the upscale sports and super sports car segment has become so thin that the Japanese can request a high fun surcharge. For this, the fuel surcharge is surprisingly low: 6.9 liters per 100 kilometers was the average consumption after two weeks of test phase – one in our practical tests, because it corresponds exactly to the promised factory consumption.
Cattle man The tachometer dominates the cockpit of the Mazda MX-5. The sports roadster proves to be surprisingly economical during consumption
The MX-5 could be your last burner?
- We didn’t find that so good: Cockpit very narrowly cut, modest trunk, high price level
- We thought that was great: Extremely high driving fun factor, powerful and sparing engine, clean processing, ingenious top coverage
- That makes the car so extraordinary: The MX-5 remains one of the few roadsters with a cult factor that have remained absolutely loyal to their original recipe. The combination of reduced operation and lightness with sovereign sports car properties can only be found in a few other cars of this kind – for example in the (much more expensive) Porsche Boxster.

Not for me
Nice vehicle, but I (59 years, 1.83 m) have recognized after a few kilometers for me that the MX5 is too loud for me when the roof is closed and getting in/out is really tedious. Too bad, I expected more.
