Mercedes-Benz launches series production of electric truck EACTROS in 2021-launches

The Mercedes-Benz Eactros in the future is in WOrth from the band: “Now & Next” – Under this motto, Mercedes-Benz truck presented new products at the WOrth site and gave an outlook on the future of sustainable mobility. Among the presented novelties was also a production-related prototype of the battery electric EACTROS for the serious distribution traffic, which gives a very concrete view of the future production vehicle. Serial production should start 2021 in the WOrth plant – in addition to the existing production of trucks with internal combustion engine. The Eeconic, designed specifically for municipal use, is based on the Mercedes-Benz Eactros and should follow in series from 2022.

“The start of series production next year is an important milestone for the location and the region. We therefore expand the portfolio of the WOrth plant and consistently go another step towards CO2-neutral transport. The site is preparing for high pressure to meet the requirements in truck production in connection with electrical drives. At the moment, for example, we form our future experts in the field of high-voltage – these are indispensable skills when it comes to the installation of vehicle batteries and the construction of an electric truck “- DR. Matthias jurytko, line location and production work WOrth

The electric truck models are planned flexibly in addition to trucks with conventional drives. Basically, the construction of various vehicle types should take place as far as possible integrated and the basic structure of the vehicle are built on a tape – regardless of whether a conventional internal combustion engine or an electric drive train is installed. Depending on the vehicle type, certain adjustments are made in production flow.

The installation of various non-conventional drive components takes place in a separate process, as well as the installation of the electric powertrain at the EACTROS: The heart of the future EACTros production is the production hall in building 75 of the WOrth plant. There for about a year the conversion work and preparations for the new production processes. This includes, among other things, building a new assembly line, which will take place in the future the complete electrical structure of the EACTROS, in particular the high-voltage components, as well as its commissioning. Subsequently, the vehicles for the finish and the final acceptance are re-integrated into the regular production process.

The EACTROS on the way to the series

At the IAA 2016, Mercedes-Benz Trucks presented a heavy electric truck as one of the world’s first manufacturers. At the beginning of 2018, the manufacturer celebrated the world premiere of the all-round further developed Mercedes-Benz Eactros, since autumn 2018, intensive practical tests are running at customers. The vehicles for the customer test were created in community work of the Locations WOrth, Mannheim and Stuttgart.

The findings from customer testing flow directly into the further development of the prototype towards the production vehicle. You show so far: The purely battery-electric powered EACTROS is the ideal vehicle for sustainable serious distribution traffic. In urban traffic, in motorway or overland trips, a conventional diesel truck in terms of availability and service provision in nothing. The approximately 200 kilometers reach of the prototype have proven to be absolutely realistic – regardless of payload, route or topography. Drivers are very pleased from the consistent availability of torque over the entire speed range. In addition, they also report by a pleasant, quiet driving experience. For forward-looking driving, electrical energy can also be recovered.

The series EACTROS should be clearly superior to the previous prototype in some points – such as the range, drive power and safety -. Also in terms of payload, the series EACTROS will also be at eye level with a conventional Actros. The EACTROS will come to the market as a two- and three-axle. Daimler Trucks will embed the vehicle in a holistic ecosystem, which also includes consulting services around e-mobility. These include route analyzes, review of possible subsidies, support for operational fleet integration and the development of suitable charging infrastructure solutions.

Investment in the future: electrification also at the ECONIC

In addition to the EACTROS, from 2022, the battery-electric Mercedes-Benz Eeconic in the WOrth plant should also run from the band. Thus, Daimler Trucks goes another step in the electrification of trucks. The technical basis for the EECONIC provides the EACTROS. Both vehicles benefit from the global platform strategy of Daimler Trucks & Buses. In this way, the series production of the electrical models can be seamlessly expanded. Due to its ergonomic and safe properties, the Eeconic is ideal as a collection and disposal vehicle in municipal use, especially in domestic transport. This use is ideal for battery-electric trucks due to the relatively short and firmly scheduled routes of around 100 kilometers with a very high stop-and-go share.

Also production in WOrth becomes CO2-neutral

Daimler Trucks & Buses also sets the course for a “green” production in Germany and Europe: all German and European works should have a CO2 neutral energy supply by 2022. All other works will follow. This means that the existing truck and busworks will only receive their purchased electrical energy from regenerative sources. The WOrth plant will gradually contribute to green production and thus contributes to the decarbonization at Daimler Trucks.

The largest truck assembly plant of Mercedes-Benz Trucks in WOrth am Rhein was founded in 1963 and produces the Mercedes-Benz truck Arocs, Atego – and since more than 20 years the heavy truck ACTROS. The Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks Econic, Unimog and Zetros are also built here. Up to 470 trucks created exactly according to customer requirements WOrth per day. With around 10.300 employees is the Mercedes-Benz plant WOrth’s second largest employer in Rhineland-Palatinate.

  1. On the one hand yes pleasing, which finally happens in this segment anymore. But, once again tenticly hesitant and only a little e-trucks beside and build with the burners. Is incomprehensible to me, why not finally make nails with heads. The customers, the emotobility, the drivers are very satisfied, the image would do well and the environment only right.
Presumably, the batteries are missing for the mass, because there was there and is also very hesitant.

  2. Technologically equipped a commercial vehicle with high-voltage technology, is the wrong way for the (export) market. That’s at best in Western Europe. With a truck, money should be earned, but if this vehicle has to be in the workshop, due to today’s overloaded technology in the first 2 years 18x (FH500 Volvo as an example), the goal is clearly missed. We are technologically so, alternatively ‘as the policy, so as not to use other ways, namely the much dominable low-voltage technique?
Or wants to, you, Daimler, u.a.’Secure a complete source of money in advance? In addition to the brand workshops, no one is able to repair anything to the new vehicles ..
