Kraxel-C class in the test: The Stelzen-Kombi even reaches the wintry alp

After the E-Class, Mercedes dares for the first time with the C-Class All-Terrain in the shark tank of the mid-range stilt station.
For real off-road fans, vehicles like the Mercedes C-Class All-Terrain are neither fish nor meat. No normal street combination and certainly no off -road vehicle.
The hardcore automobile Kraxler already refer to the indicated underbody protection as a lifestyle planking. Nevertheless, this T-model of the C-Class, which is 40 millimeters higher, will also find its customers in markets such as Japan and Germany. However, Audi and Volvo are already bustling in the segment of the stilts of the middle class and make life difficult for the Mercedes. The fact that the Swabians are still standing for the first time with an all-terrain C-Class of the competition is due to the E-Class of the same name, which has been on the market since 2017. "Some customers like the concept, but prefer a cheap variant," explains product manager Thorsten Wilke.
Basic price of 55.394.50 euros
But this C-Class does not work cheap. The radiator grille with only one cross strut and the off-road look lift the all-terrain version from the other T models of the W206 series. In addition, there is the optional digital light from the S-Class, which in the field, as soon as it goes around the corner, almost radiates to the left and right in the right angle and thus illuminates a particularly wide range. With a length of 4.76 meters in the T-model of the C-Class, space is not necessarily in short supply in the T-model of the C-Class. With a base price of 55.394.50 euros, the C 220 D 4Matic All-Terrain is almost 2.500 euros cheaper than the E-Class. However, the big brother has 4 kW / 6 hp and 40 Newton meters less than the smaller brother. This is also due to the lack of electrical support by the integrated starter generator (ISG).
Mercedes Benz
The four-cylinder diesel is not a scream, but already lets the driver participate acoustically in his work. The support from the ISG-Mild hybridization by 15 kW / 20 hp and especially the torque of 200 Newton meters significantly minimize the inaugural weakness and help the 1.Moving 825 kilograms of C-Class all-terrain more smoothly than is expected from an engine with two liters of displacement and 147 kW / 200 hp. That the maximum torque of 440 Newton meters is already 1.800 rpm is certainly not of a disadvantage. After 7.8 seconds, the all-terrain reaches the 100 km/h mark from a standing basis and only has to result in the air resistance at 231 km/h.
Mercedes specifies the consumption of 5.6 l/100 km, 1.9 l/100 km more flowed through the combustion rooms during our test drive, but we were also on motorways faster. The comfort of the classic steel chassis also gives little reason to blame. The fact that the stilt combination is prone to the curves is probably only bothered by sports car fans who want the wet of the vehicles to be constantly sniffing over the asphalt at a few centimeters. Therefore, the spread of the driving modes could also be a little more pronounced. Anyone who clicks through the driving programs searches in vain for a sports plus setting. There are two off-road programs that are suitable for sand or snow (off-road) and rock (off-road plus).

Off-road alpinism is realized by control systems
The engineers realized the increased ground clearance by other feathers (plus 30 millimeters) and larger tires (plus 10 millimeters). Away from paved roads, the Mercedes C 220 D 4Matic All-Terrain does without classic off-road systems such as locking or gearboxes. Off-road alpinism is only realized by the control systems. "We have significantly improved the regular comfort," explains experimenter Christof Kuhner. On a trip to an off-road area, the software Kraxler struck very well and coped without any problems. The fact that the downhill control brakes the station wagon backwards to the set speed helps when maneuvering in the snow. So you can easily get to the alp in winter.

The navigation system and infotainment are responsible for the fact that you can find the way too. At first glance, this does not differ from the other C classes. So the all-terrain also has a 12.3-inch virtual cockpit and a central 11.9-inch tablet touchscreen, which is inclined by six degrees to the driver. There is also the head-up display, which projects the information about 4.5 meters in front of the bonnet. However, something has changed in the software and with the latest update, virtual favorites buttons are moving in, which are based on the driver’s preferences. From December the Kraxel C-Class will be at the dealer.
