The facelift of the Mercedes B-Class is hard to see right away. Nevertheless, the compact van has been upgraded enormously compared to the competition – with the most complete range of alternative drives.

W.As for a coincidence: The Mercedes B-Class has barely got its first serious competitor with the BMW Active Tourer than Mercedes has sent its space cruiser for a facelift. Three years after the launch, the A-Class’s big brother is getting an update in terms of design and equipment, which should arm it for the tougher competition.

However, there won’t be any big surprises – neither with the price, which only rises by a few hundred to 27,102 euros, nor with the car itself.

Because for the B-Class to actually appear in a new light, you have to order the new LED headlights that Mercedes is now adding to its range for the first time. Otherwise, only new bumpers, a wider radiator trim and the daytime running lights that are now integrated into the headlights make the difference.

Breakdown and emergency calls as standard

Inside, however, the facelift is immediately noticeable: a freestanding monitor now sits enthroned on the dashboard, which is one size larger than before and, if desired, offers significantly more content. It is not for nothing that every B-Class is now equipped with the "Connect Me" telematics service. In the basic version, it handles breakdown and emergency call management.

Those who spend more can query certain vehicle functions via their mobile phone and use many online functions from the Comand system. Also new to the equipment list are the improved rear-end collision assistant and optional comfort access with Keyless-Go.

When it comes to the drive, Mercedes already offers more choice than BMW at the moment and therefore apparently sees no reason to update. The only new feature is the all-wheel drive option for the B 200 CDI – the 4Matic version was previously reserved for the most powerful diesel.

Otherwise, there are four diesel engines and four gasoline engines, each covering a power range of 90 to 211 hp. This means that even the slowest B-Class can achieve 180 km / h, and the fastest comes up to 240 km / h. Consumption values are between 3.6 and 6.6 liters according to the norm.

With natural gas and electric drive

If that’s still too much for you, the Swabians have two eco models on offer, with which they particularly want to drive the Bavarians into the parade. First there is the B 200 Natural Gas, which BMW has nothing to oppose.

And then there is the B-Class Electric Drive, which can be ordered from November at a price that has not yet been mentioned. It doesn’t look quite as spacey as the BMW i3, but it has better performance and offers what the electrically powered BMW hardly has to offer: space.

In general, Mercedes can sit back and relax for now. Because while BMW is only just beginning space travel, Stuttgart is looking at a comfortable lead: 350,000 vehicles from the current B-Class model alone have been sold worldwide.
