When looking at the model list, however, one innovation immediately catches the eye: the range for the 3 Series Coupe and the Cabrio has now been expanded to include the 318i entry-level model.

163 PS, 228 km / h – what would these data have shown in the past for consumption values. Today you can drive a powerful car like the BMW 320d much cheaper and only need to fill up with 4.1 liters per 100 kilometers. At full throttle it is of course more, but still the Spar 3 series literally shows off its competitors.
B.MW is trimming its most important series for the new model year in the direction of economy. As a premiere, BMW is presenting the extremely economical variant 320d Efficient Dynamics as a sedan and station wagon.
The two fuel savers are thus the new flagship products of the already quite credible ecological campaign under the name Efficient Dynamics. Both the sedan and the station wagon consume an average of 4.1 liters per 100 kilometers and emit just 109 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer. It is gratifying that BMW is offering the 163 hp economy diesel at the same price as the regular, 177 hp 320d, namely for 33,800 euros.
The eco-3 series, which can go up to 228 kilometers per hour, consumes 0.7 liters less than the cheapest Mercerdes C-Class (220 CDI, 170 PS), and the Audi A4 2.0 TDIe (136 PS) is also 0.5 liters above that Consumption of the BMW.
In addition, the range for the 3 Series Coupe and the Cabrio is being expanded to include the 318i entry-level model – a 143 hp 2.0-liter petrol engine provides the drive. Thanks to the decidedly lean direct injection, consumption in the standard cycle is limited to 6.3 liters. BMW is also offering a new basic offer for touring customers: the 115 hp 316d.
The engines for the 320d and 325d models increase their power and torque slightly and, with consumption between 6.1 liters (325d convertible) and 4.7 liters (320d coupe), are definitely food contenders. The top model 335i continues to generate 306 hp, but consumes eight percent less thanks to the change from a sequential double to a single turbocharger system.
With this, BMW is relying on constructive disarmament, i.e. focusing on reducing fuel consumption. This is all the more important because just a few years ago the manufacturer put the dynamism and strength of the car above everything else like no other.
The technological spearhead of the current Bavarian engine construction marks the 320d Blue Performance. It is so technically mature that it already meets the Euro 6 standard, which will only come into force in 2014. The engine is available as an option for the 3 Series Sedan and the Touring estate model – and like the six-cylinder in the 330d, it reduces the nitrogen oxides, which are so critical in diesel engines, thanks to an additional NOx storage catalyst.
If the sedan and the touring are visually unchanged in the New Year, BMW has given the 3 Series Convertible and Coupe some subtle visual changes. Newly contoured headlights with bi-xenon inserts and LED daytime running lights, together with a wider BMW kidney grille and tapered front apron, create more presence. The front overhang, which has been lengthened by almost three centimeters, stretches the silhouette even further, but also improves pedestrian protection. The taillights now have uniformly red colored cover glasses.
