E-car battery
The production of batteries for electric cars could be more harmful to the environment than previously thought

A Swedish study shows that the production of batteries for electric cars could be significantly more harmful to the environment than previously assumed.
D.If an electric car the size of a Tesla Model S is ecologically sound, you have to drive it for eight years. At least that’s what a study by the Swedish Ministry of the Environment says, which took a closer look at the production of lithium-ion batteries in electric cars and which the SHZ is now reporting on. Production would produce around 150 to 200 kilos of carbon dioxide equivalents per kilowatt hour of storage capacity. Converted to the batteries of a Tesla Model S, that would be around 17.5 tons of CO2. That is an enormous amount if you consider the annual per capita emissions of CO2 in Germany of around ten tons.
The Swedish study calculates: A vehicle with a conventional internal combustion engine could be driven eight years before it has as badly impacted the environment as the battery production for a Tesla Model S, especially since the power consumption when driving is not taken into account. For a smaller electric vehicle like the Nissan Leaf, it would be about three years. The researchers therefore demand that manufacturers and consumers have to get by with smaller batteries – in stark contrast to the hunt for ever greater range, which is usually bought with larger batteries.
