Audi Grandsphere Concept
Audi's top novelty at the trade fair is a design study, and what a study: the Grandsphere is a luxury-class sedan that is undoubtedly much more sporty than the A8.
According to Audi, the 5.35 meter long monster is based on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE), has 800 volt technology, a 120 kWh battery and all-wheel drive with 530 kW.
The production version is scheduled to start in the second half of this decade. A chart suggests that series production could be planned in 2026, but more on that in our article.

BMW i Vision Circular
Similar to Audi, BMW is not showing any completely new production models at its home game at the Munich trade fair. Instead, several design studies can be seen, including the Circular, the name of which already suggests the purpose: It's about the circular economy.
The main aim of the small car study is to show how a completely recyclable car can be produced from reused materials. One of the ideas is a quick release fastener that can be used to easily detach connected parts for recycling.

BMW iX3 facelift
The newest series BMW at the fair is the lifted iX3. The changes are limited. The mid-range SUV has a slightly sharpened front section and larger displays on the inside.
On the outside, the double kidney grille becomes larger, the headlights more slit-like; there is also a modified apron. The taillights are also becoming a bit more distinctive. Blue accents on the aprons will be characteristic of the electric version of the X3. The prices increase by a thousand to 67,300 euros. The revised iX3 can be ordered immediately, and the first vehicles are to be delivered in autumn.

BMW i4
We already know the i4 electric sedan, but it will be celebrating its trade fair premiere at the IAA. One of the highlights of the four-door model based on the new 4 Series Gran Coupe is the astonishing range of up to 590 kilometers in accordance with the WLTP standard.
The car will hit the market in November 2021.

BMW iX
The second electric newcomer from BMW can also be seen at the fair. Like the i4, the iX will also start in November. Although the car has the format of the X5 (albeit with a lower height), it is said to be based on a new electric platform.
Here, too, BMW amazes with a long range of up to 630 kilometers.

BMW CE 04
BMW Motorrad will be represented at the IAA with the new CE 04, which was only presented at the beginning of July. The chic and somewhat futuristic designed electric scooter offers a top speed of 120 km / h and a range of 130 kilometers.
The standard equipment includes a 10.25-inch display with integrated map navigation and connectivity. An LED headlight and an LED taillight are also standard, with adaptive headlights as an option.

BMW i Vision Amby and BMW Vision Amby
The two confusingly similarly named studies i Vision Amby and Vision Amby represent electric two-wheelers which, depending on the user's driver's license, can manage three different speed levels: 25, 45 or 60 km / h.
The thing with the "i" in its name is presented as a high-speed pedelec. It has pedals and could also ride on the bike path in 25 km / h mode (subject to appropriate legal changes). The study without "i", on the other hand, has a throttle grip and is therefore more of a moped / scooter / motorcycle.

City Transformer
An exotic of the rather strange variety is the City Transformer, a small electric vehicle with variable gauge from an Israeli start-up company. So far there are only pictures of a prototype, a version with a new exterior design will be at the IAA.
Two electric motors on the rear axle provide the drive. The battery supposedly supplies electricity for a range of around 180 kilometers.

Cupra UrbanRebel Concept
The UrbanRebel from Cupra is more than a racer with an unrealistic rear wing. It gives an outlook on a 4.08 meter long electric car based on a shortened MEB platform, which will come onto the market in 2025 – as Cupra has already officially announced.
The (certainly much more civil looking) series car is to be built in the Spanish Seat plant in Martorell near Barcelona. Not only the Cupra will be built there, but also other "urban electric cars" of the group. What is meant are apparently cars like the production version of the ID.Life from Volkswagen (also presented at the IAA).

Dacia Spring Electric
The Spring Electric is described by Dacia as the cheapest electric car on the market, and with a base price of around 20,000 euros (before funding!), That's probably the case. The only 3.73 meter long SUV is mainly intended as a city car, because the range is just 230 kilometers.
15 Dacia Spring are said to be on the "Blue Lane". Visitors to the IAA can not only be chauffeured, but also drive the electric car themselves.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 as a robotaxi
At Hyundai you can see the Ioniq 5 as a robotaxi with eye-catching sensors. The car is actually presented by Motional, a joint venture between Hyundai and the Irish supplier Aptiv. The latter apparently provides the technology for autonomous driving.
The car is slated to go into passenger service as early as 2023, but not with us, but in Lyft's American robotaxi network.

Mercedes EQE
The Mercedes EQE is undeniably one of the trade fair highlights. The car looks like a scaled-down EQS, but firstly, at 4.99 meters, it is far from small and secondly, there is an important difference in the body: the car does not have a large tailgate, but a trunk lid.
The only motor-battery combination that Mercedes is now presenting is the EQE 350 with a 215 kW rear motor and a 90 kWh battery – the battery that has been announced for the EQS. This should allow the car to travel 660 kilometers. Not as far as the EQS 450+, which is supposed to cover 784 km, but a very impressive range. The market launch will begin in mid-2022, the prices have not yet been determined.

Mercedes-Maybach EQS Concept
This study, which, strangely enough, is called Mercedes-Maybach EQS (without SUV) gives an outlook on the Mercedes EQS SUV announced for 2022. Will the Maybach version of the car really have a different name than the normal Mercedes version? It would be crazy, but marketing people can do anything. We don't know right now.
Mercedes does not reveal anything about the technology yet, but since the car is based on the EVA platform like the Mercedes EQS, it will be used as a guide. At the market launch date, the manufacturer says that the Maybach should only start after the Mercedes EQS SUV.

Mercedes EQG Concept
The new Mercedes studies at the IAA include the Mercedes-Maybach EQS and the electric version of the G-Class. The technical basis is (as with the Jeep Wrangler Magneto Concept) the combustion platform. Instead of simply exchanging the combustion engine for an electric motor like the Jeep, Mercedes has provided four wheel hub motors – technically it is more convincing.
Otherwise, apparently as much as possible should be taken over from the combustion version. The car, for example, has a ladder frame into which the batteries are to be integrated. The car will also have a reduction gear, and the look will also remain very angular and G-shaped. The series version should not start until 2024, as officially announced in July.

Mercedes-AMG EQS
The Mercedes-AMG EQS is no longer a study. As already announced, the car has an output of up to 560 kW. That's enough for a sprint to 100 km / h in 3.4 seconds. This means that the car is 175 kW more powerful and just under a second faster than the previous top-of-the-range Mercedes EQS 580 4Matic.
There is also a version with 484 kW. Both are to receive the well-known 108 kWh battery. Otherwise the technology was only slightly modified.

Mercedes-sponsored artwork Earthtime 1.26 Munich
This work of art has been on view on Munich's Odeonsplatz for some time: "Earthtime 1.26 Munich", a 24 by 21 meter illuminated network by the American artist Janet Echelman. The installation was apparently sponsored by Mercedes – the brand has a showroom right next door on the corner of Brienner Strasse.
The net sculpture high above the square is reminiscent of fishing nets. Wind, rain and light change shape and color. The work of art is inspired by the 3D data model of the sea surface after an earthquake in the Pacific, which accelerated the earth's rotation and thus shortened the length of the day by around 1.26 microseconds – hence the name of the work of art.

Microlino
The Swiss company Micro is represented at the IAA with the series version of the Microlino. The concept of the light vehicle in the L7e class is clearly based on the BMW Isetta: the car is opened from the front like a refrigerator. Then you have to cheat around the fixed steering column to land on the driver's seat.
Inside there is a sports steering wheel and a display on the steering axle. It is powered by a 12 kW permanent magnet electric motor (PSM) on the rear axle, which brings the vehicle, which is only 2.43 meters long and weighs around 500 kilograms, to a maximum of 90 km / h. There are also three battery variants for a range of 95, 175 and 230 km. Three equipment versions in bright colors are available, the configurator is due to go online soon after the IAA. The prices should start at around 12,500 euros.

Mini Vision Urbanaut
The main attraction of Mini at the IAA is the Urbanaut study, a futuristic van for the city of the future, which is to be physically experienced for the first time as a vehicle model for visitors to the Open Space at the IAA – probably on Lenbachplatz.
The electrically powered car relies on sustainable materials in the interior. Visitors can marvel at the rotating driver's seat, the retractable dashboard, which becomes a "daybed", as well as the retractable steering wheel and the opening windshield.

Ora Cat
The Chinese Great Wall group is entering the European market. In addition to the premium brand Wey, the electric car brand Ora is set to start in 2022. The first model to be launched will be a compact car with the project name Cat – the final name has not yet been determined. The car is not a world premiere; it was previously shown under the name Good Cat (or Haomao in Chinese).
A 120 kW motor provides the drive, two battery versions with 49 and 63 kWh are planned, which should result in ranges of around 300 and 400 km. As a base price, Ora is targeting around 30,000 euros – for a compact car a la VW ID.3 that would be cheap, because for 30 grand you can currently only get small electric cars.

Porsche Mission R Concept
Officially, this Porsche study shows what an electric racing vehicle for customer racing could look like. But just as the Cupra UrbanRebel only appears to be a racing car study, this Porsche study can also be interpreted as an outlook on a road vehicle.
"At 4,326 millimeters in length, the Porsche Mission R is slightly shorter than the current 718 Cayman series," said Porsche. The comparison only makes sense if there is a relationship here. Apparently the study shows elements of an electric Cayman. This is probably why parts of the front end are painted red …

Renault Megane E-Tech Electric
The electric Megane can be seen for the first time at the fair without camouflage. At 4.21 meters, it is about as long as a VW ID.3 and significantly lower at 1.50 meters; nevertheless, the car has something SUV-like about it.
The technical basis is CMF-EV (as with the Nissan Ariya). Motors with 96 and 160 kW and batteries with 40 or 60 kWh for ranges of 300 or 470 km are offered.

Renault 5 prototype
On September 7th, in addition to the Elektro-Megane, the R5 prototype could also be seen at the Renault stand. However, the small electric car was already seen at the Renaulution press conference in January 2021.
Like the Elektro-Megane, the study will be on display again on the weekend (10-12 September). The car is said to have a 100 kW electric motor. When it will be launched on the market is not yet officially known, but from the manufacturer's instructions, one can conclude that it will not be so far until the end of 2023. A 160 kW Alpine version will follow.

Renault Mobilize Limo
Renault's shared mobility brand Mobilize is showing a new electric sedan with a length of 4.67 meters at the fair. The car is intended exclusively for ride-hailing and taxi services; it will not be sold as a private vehicle (at least for the time being).
The 60 kWh battery enables 450 kilometers with one charge, the 110 kW motor brings the car up to 140 km / h.

Smart Concept # 1
With Concept # 1, Smart gives the expected outlook on a small SUV. The technical basis is (after everything we can figure out) the SEA platform from partner Geely, who is also supposed to produce the car. At 4.29 meters, the car is 20 centimeters longer than the VW ID.Life also shown at the IAA – that is, it is practically a class higher. In terms of size, it is more comparable to the Peugeot e-2008, but the car is astonishingly high at 1.70 meters..
According to Mercedes, the study is already close to series production, but it has portal doors and the golden details in the interior do not yet look very realistic. And finally, Smart does not yet provide any information about drives and batteries. That doesn’t have to mean that it will be years before the start of series production – it could also be that Smart deliberately keeps the information bites small.

VW ID.Life Concept
This design study is Volkswagen's highlight at the fair. It is a 4.09 meter long electric SUV, according to the manufacturer, it is an outlook on a model starting in 2025 based on a shortened version of the modular electrical construction kit (MEB).
VW has not yet revealed what the production model will be called; we tap ID.2, because then there would still be space for a smaller ID.1, which we imagine as a small car with about the same length.

VW ID.5 GTX
VW has announced the ID.5 GTX for the Munich trade fair, again only with the red and yellow camouflage film, i.e. in the version that we have known since the end of April. But at the IAA, the public can see the car live for the first time.
The ID.5 GTX is the coupe-like version of the ID.4 GTX; One of the special features is the spoiler at the rear. The drive is provided by the same all-wheel drive system with 220 kW as with the other GTX. The car will not be on the market until 2022.

"NoIAA" protests
As at the last IAA in Frankfurt, the IAA opponents also made themselves felt in Munich. The first stickers were found on the city's light poles early on. The environmentalists accuse the auto industry of "greenwashing".
But contrary to what we expected, so far neither the Blue Line nor the stands of car manufacturers at the Open Spaces in the center have been affected. However, activists abseiled from motorway bridges around Munich and there was a small protest action in which Greenpeace members climbed into the artificial lake in front of the exhibition center. Further protests have been announced for Friday and Saturday.

From September 7 to 12, 2021, the first German auto show since the beginning of the corona pandemic will take place: the IAA Mobility. The fair, previously known internationally as the "Frankfurt Auto Show", will take place in Munich for the first time. We will show you the electric cars that are at the fair or in the open spaces in the center of Munich.
We have newly included the numerous Daimler novelties, from the Smart Concept # 1 to the EQE (now with a correct picture) to the EQG Concept to the Mercedes-Maybach EQS, as well as the studies of the VW Group, from the small ID.Life to to the Porsche Mission R (which is perhaps not just a racing car study).
The most important automotive innovations are now probably all included, but a few two-wheelers and more exotic vehicles are still missing. We will continue to update this photo series as soon as we can.
As many innovations as the trade fair offers: Quite a few brands are missing. This is especially true for Toyota and the entire Stellantis Group – including the German brand Opel. General Motors does not take part, neither does Skoda or Seat. A number of bicycle brands, electric scooter manufacturers, suppliers and the like are represented.
We leave out plug-in hybrids here, after all, InsideEVs.de is an electric car site. For these innovations, we recommend the trade fair overview on our sister site Motor1.
