The ultimate manual for classic car screwdrivers
Not all spark plugs are created equal. Even the small component has its evolution
Source: Robert Bosch GmbH
Anyone who takes apart the engine of their classic must know what they are doing. You have to know the tightening torques or the inner workings of ignition systems. A new advisor conveys extensive know-how.
"Workshop for Precision Mechanics & Electrical Engineering" was on the sign. It was attached to the house wall at Rotebuhlstrasse 75B in Stuttgart. The young Robert Bosch rented office space in the rear building there in 1886. It was the beginning of a great career.
It would take another eight years before the technical cornerstone was laid, which paved the way for the company to become one of the world’s leading automotive suppliers. In 1904 Bosch got hold of a magneto, which he optimized.
The device was to become the best ignition system for motor vehicles at the time. Today components and accessories from Bosch are indispensable for many new cars, but also for the maintenance, repair and restoration of old and youngtimers. More than 700,000 of them are parked in German garages alone.
Finally understood: the gasoline engine control
The Bosch Automotive Tradition division has long since made itself indispensable when it comes to the procurement of replacements; the oldies specialists from Bosch often procure replacements within a few days.
In addition to spare parts, when repairing classic cars, there is often a lack of the corresponding installation instructions or workshop manuals. Here, too, Bosch has already provided valuable help in the past with its so-called “yellow booklets” on the topics of Jetronic, ignition systems and Motronic.

Andreas Drescher has a soft spot for old Volvos, especially the Amazon. Produced between 1956 and 1970, the mid-range car was something like the VW Beetle… Sweden. Today the Amazon is comparatively cheap, and the spare parts supply is also good – a great introduction to the classic car hobby.

The fan scene for classic Volvos is rather manageable in Germany. So people were all the more happy when they saw an old Amazon driving on the street, for example…, says Andreas Drescher. “The feedback is always positive.” Probably also because the Amazon is not a prodigy car for people with a lot of money.

This Volvo 262 Bertone is an exotic one: the Italian design company turned the four-door Swedish sedan into a two-door coupe with a vinyl roof. A …Six-cylinder, which was also installed in the Renault Alpine. But not all Volvos can be saved by Andreas Drescher, some of them are not worth rebuilding. This Volvo Amazon Kombi only serves as a spare parts dispenser.

On this basis, the Stuttgart-based company has now published a 416-page specialist book with the title “Otto engine control for young and oldtimers”. It was published by Heel-Verlag and is available in bookshops for EUR 44.95.
The new plant provides detailed and meticulous information on carburetors, gasoline injection and ignition systems in three large thematic blocks. The carburetor chapter alone extends over 91 pages and ranges from the surface carburetor of the early days to the electronic carburetor of the 90s.
The correct tightening torque extends life
The history of injection systems began almost 50 years ago with the D-Jetronic from Bosch and extends to the current Motronic, in which a tiny computer controls the injection and ignition systems together. This second chapter is 185 pages.
The third main chapter covers everything from conventional coil ignition to fully electronic ignition, as can already be found in a number of youngtimers. It also goes into detail about the function and structure of spark plugs and their various designs and shapes since 1902.
Installation instructions for the various types are not missing, nor are the prescribed tightening torques in cast iron or light metal cylinder heads, which can prove to be extremely useful with regard to the service life of engines.
The conclusion: A very good guide for professional screwdrivers as well as for advanced amateurs of the classic car scene, which should not be missing on any workbench.
"Otto engine control for young and oldtimers: carburetors · petrol injection · ignition systems", 406 pages, Verlag Heel 2016, ISBN-13: 978-3958433311, 44.95 euros
