Transport Minister Peter Ramsauer wants to make license plates a local patriotic embassy again. A comeback of many exotic license plates is imminent. And there could be fun new abbreviations.

L.Okalpatriots have always looked after them, oldtimers whose license plates begin with exotic abbreviations such as SY, MT or TE. Neither the car should be forgotten nor the area in which the precious items were registered. If they drove from the farm, they were allowed to puzzle on Germany’s streets: where does the sledge come from? Or, with a more rustic model: be careful, farmer on the way.

Only the initiated knew that the SY driver must have received his metal sign without a European flag in Syke before 1979. Then the city abbreviation was buried. The county seat of Hoya now issues license plates starting with DH – Diepholz. So MT (Montabaur) became WW, the Westerwaldkreis. TE once stood for Tecklenburg, since 1975 the city in the Teutoburg Forest has belonged to Steinfurt in terms of labeling.

SFA became HK

As a result of the regional reforms carried out throughout West Germany, especially in the 1970s, districts were amalgamated and new administrative offices were created. The storm of indignation was strong across the republic, not least because the license plate with the abbreviation for one’s own city suddenly disappeared. This could lead to inferiority complexes at the campsite in Bibione at the latest.

Many a small bastion did well – and only fell after a hard fight. Soltau-Fallingbostel has only been part of the Heidekreis since August 1, 2011. The independence disappeared and with it the SFA. New cars from Soltau now drive on HK.

There is now new hope for the disenfranchised. Cities and municipalities should change their license plates may choose freely in the future. Federal Transport Minister Peter Ramsauer (CSU) said this in the “Westfalische Rundschau”. In addition to the reintroduction of old license plates, the introduction of completely new license plates should also be made possible. The Federal Council should approve the corresponding ordinance in September.

Expression of love for home

Ramsauer wanted to respond to citizens’ wishes, said a ministry spokesman. The license plate could thus become a “local patriotic” message. The minister ascribes great emotional importance to the vehicle letters: “For most motorists, license plates are an affair of the heart. They are an expression of closeness to their homeland, love of their homeland and identification. ”In future, vehicle owners could“ use their license plate to show that they belong to their place of origin, their community, city or region ”. Just in time for the 2013 federal election.

The ministry should have consulted Professor Ralf Bochert straight away. The dean of the Tourism Management degree course in Heilbronn had already surveyed around 17,000 German citizens in 81 cities in 2010. 73 percent wanted the old combination of letters back.

The lawmakers had underestimated the Germans’ longing for their provinces. After reunification, the East German municipalities and their license plates gradually came to the collar: Zeitz (ZZ) became the Burgenlandkreis BLK in 1994, and Stadtroda (SRO) became the Saale-Holzland-Kreis (SRK), which also became the municipality of Torgau-Oschitz a letter because it grew to TDO and all of Northern Saxony.

Feud between OHR and KuN

It was not uncommon for violent feuds to arise because something suddenly grew together that did not go together. The people of Ohringen, for example, were played badly because their OHR was exchanged for a KuN, even though they were neighbors with warm dislike and clearly outnumbered them. Since the merger in 1973, one petition for their beloved OHR license plate has been chasing the next, but the Kunzelsauer in the Hohenlohe district had the longer hand. Soon no more.

One is inclined to ask why not like this straight away. Why not get rid of the red tape sooner? But in addition to the reduced bureaucratic effort, there was another argument in favor of the merging of vehicle number plates, as the members of the NRW district assembly now cite. They rail that with the complete release of the identification of motor vehicles, "a further fragmentation of the license plate landscape" will coincide, which will also bring with it "considerable disadvantages for the prevention and fight against crime". The North Rhine-Westphalian Ministry of the Interior, on the other hand, wiped the concerns off the table: Nothing changes in the determination of the vehicle owner – everything else is "a matter of getting used to". There is also a maximum of three letters for the municipality abbreviation.

Comeback for Lunen and Witten

Within the Unna (UN) district, Lunen and the “LuN” label can celebrate a revival, and in the Ennepe-Ruhr district (EN) also “WIT” for Witten. And cities that never had their own license plate number in the past can choose a combination of letters. So how about POP in Poppenreuth in Franconia or NUT for Nutteln in Holstein or AFF like Affental in Baden-Wurttemberg?

Thuringia’s Minister of Transport, Christian Carius, made a proposal to strengthen identity last year. He also wants the option to keep the license plate for life – regardless of the vehicle change.

Lifelong license plate?

“Car license plates represent regional identity. You are like a piece of home that you have come to love, ”says Carius. The lifelong license plate aims to ensure that the license plate can be retained even when changing vehicles.

The authorities will soon have a lot of work to do, because the approval bodies have had to implement another reform since July 1st. Now two vehicles can be registered with just one license plate. Among other things, the regulation is intended to simplify the acquisition of electric cars for short journeys. However, only one of the two vehicles can be driven at a time.

The prerequisite for the issue of a variable number plate is that there are two vehicles of the same class. Cars and mobile homes fall into class M1. Class L includes motorcycles, light motorcycles, quads and trikes. There are trailers in class 01. The license plates issued in pairs consist of three individual parts – two fixed to the vehicles and one removable. The latter is clicked on the vehicle that is currently being moved.

Relief for the H mark

There is also an innovation in the H license plates for classic cars. In order for a classic car to be recognized as such, it needs an appraisal. However, vehicle experts have been given more freedom to assess the classics. The previous five-level rating system is no longer applicable, and a “good state of preservation” is now the condition for classic car status. The criteria for the engine, on the other hand, have been tightened: In future, the drive must come from the same series; previously, non-manufacturer engines could also be installed.

The vehicle must be at least 30 years old and in good condition and condition. If the owner receives the H, they only have to pay a flat-rate vehicle tax (currently just under 200 euros), which is not based on engine size or pollutant emissions. There are also particularly cheap insurance tariffs.
