Nio has now announced a groundbreaking battery option for its electric cars. The Chinese start-up wants to offer 150 kWh battery packs made up of solid-state cells with an extremely high energy density.

Nio plans to start delivering these new batteries in the fourth quarter of 2022 – so only in two years.

Nio started in 2018 with a 70 kWh battery, then introduced an 84 kWh battery in 2019 and 100 kWh versions followed at the end of 2020. Interestingly, there were upgrades to the batteries so that older vehicles could be upgraded with larger batteries.

"All Nio users can choose to upgrade to 150 kWh." This statement by Nio shows that the new 150 kWh batteries are available for every Nio model. So you can replace the old batteries and give your car a longer range.

The first generation Nio ES8 (market launch 2018) is expected to achieve a NEDC range of over 730 kilometers with the 150 kWh batteries. The new, more efficient Nio models logically have even more range with the 150 kWh batteries:

  • Nio ES8 (current model): 850 km NEDC
  • Nio ES6: 900 km NEDC
  • Nio EC6: 910 km NEDC

The most exciting news is that the new Nio ET7 with a 150 kWh battery should cover 1,000 kilometers according to the NEDC. But it starts with 70 or 100 kW, and that too in the first quarter of 2022. For comparison: The top version of the Model S, the "Plaid" has a 130 kWh battery and covers around 840 kilometers.

Nio promises a good battery life and higher charging efficiency than the current models. However, details were not given. The new batteries combine different technologies, including a cathode with an extremely high nickel content and an anode made of a silicon-carbon composite material:

The new 150 kWh solid-state batteries from Nio allegedly have an extremely high energy density of 360 watt hours per kilogram. That should be the energy density at cell level, which is of course higher than that at the level of the entire battery pack.

This means that the energy density is 50 percent higher than with the 100 kWh package from Nio. The 84 kWh package from 2019 was 180 watt hours per kilo (at the level of the entire package). At the battery pack level, the 100 kWh batteries are likely to be well over 200 Wh / kg.
