Nissan receives green light for his solar park. The Japanese car maker may expand the plant at the production plant in British Sunderland. With the additional 20 megawatt system, the company put the foundation for his new EV competence center “EV36Zero”, it says in a message. That’s another step on the way to its own CO2 neutrality.
According to companies, the extension of the photovoltaic systems the proportion of the electricity generated on site doubles to 20 percent of the factory-owned needs. This is enough to build any leaf sold in Europe exclusively with green energy. The installation of the system is expected to be completed in May 2022. “We have used renewable energy sources on site for more than 15 years,” said Alan Johnson, vice president of manufacturing at Nissan Sunderland. Nissan has been producing its own green electricity in Sunderland since 2005: the ten wind turbines have an output of 6.6 megawatts, and the solar park added in 2016 delivers an additional 4.75 MW.
The new building developed and installed by the partner company Engenera is just the beginning of a total of up to ten solar parks that are planned as part of the EV competence center “EV36Zero”. Nissan is therefore initially investing one billion pounds (around 1.17 billion euros) in the ecosystem. In addition to the production of electric vehicles, a gigafactory for batteries and a microgrid for renewable energies are also to be created in cooperation with partners.
According to Nissan, the partner Envision AESC received the building permit for the battery plant in October: The plant, which is being built directly next to the vehicle production facility, offers a capacity of 9 GWh. In the context of “EV36Zero” therefore a 1-MW battery storage system is planned, which consists of used batteries of Nissan electric vehicles. They should store the excess energy generated during the day and, if necessary, compensate for high demands in the grid.
With “Nissan Ambition 2030”, the company has just presented its long-term vision of mobility. On the way to the climate neutrality it is aiming for by the 2050 financial year, Nissan says it is consistently driving the electrification of the model range. 23 new electrified models, including 15 pure electric vehicles, will be launched worldwide by the 2030 fiscal year. The chill-out concept vehicle now presented is intended to give an outlook on a next-generation all-electric crossover, which is also to be produced in Sunderland.
