VW boss Herbert Diess wants to bury the combustion engine. Apparently, however, the group keeps a back door open: with climate fuels, a diesel would even be cleaner than an electric car depending on the electric mix. Comes the electro alternative for everyone?

For links on this page, Site receives. A commission from the dealer, Z.B. For marked. More information is a rather inconspicuous press release, but it has considerable importance: Volkswagen has officially released its four-cylinder diesel engines for the use of paraffin fuels. "These newly developed diesel fuels with proportions from organic components enable clear CO2 savings of 70-95 percent compared to conventional diesel", it says in a message from Wolfsburg. Followed by a surprising sentence: "In addition to the accelerated surge of electromobility, Volkswagen is consistently developing the existing combustion portfolio. On the one hand, the company deals with the various customer needs and takes into account the internationally varied drive projects and the respective framework conditions."

No more pure electric strategy at VW?

This is surprising because VW boss Herbert Diess, as is well known, prefers to bury the internal combustion engine today than tomorrow. What he thinks of his remaining petrol and diesel customers indirectly showed by a demand for a car boss: petrol and diesel should become even more expensive due to a massive increase in tax than already to finance emobility.

By 2030, VW should finally increase the proportion of pure e-cars at the sales in Europe to over 70 percent. The company wants to be completely climate -neutral by 2050. Volkswagen is planning to reduce the emissions per vehicle in Europe by 40 percent compared to the 2018 state of 2018 on the "Way to Zero" – that is on average over the entire life cycle, 17 tons of CO2 less per car.

Auto Motor & Sport As "clean" Are e-cars? That depends on the electricity

Apparently VW is now discovering the climate sprit as a serious alternative to its electricity. Paraffinic diesel fuels made of residual or waste materials, such as C.A.R.E.-Diesel, as pure climate fuels, are no longer dependent on fossil sources and are therefore significantly more climate-friendly. So far, however, it has not been available in large quantities, and so far the German Federal Environment Ministry has torpedoed the climate sprit .Also possible to improve the CO2 balance is to add the climate sprit to conventional diesel. Perhaps the most promising development are purely synthetic fuels that are created using CO2 and electricity from regenerative sources. For this purpose, Porsche is already testing production facilities abroad.

Why Porsche relies on e-fuel

Porsche, like no other manufacturer, relies on the topic of efuels. Together with Siemens Energy in Punta Arenas (Chile), the Zuffenhausen team is currently building an industrial plant for the production of almost CO2-neutral fuel. According to the head of series Frank-Steffen Walliser, it is not just about keeping the brand icon Porsche 911 alive as possible without an electric motor, but to secure the fuel for the fleet of existing vehicles.

Already in the coming year 130.000 liters of EFUEL are created. In two stages, the capacity is to be expanded to around 55 million liters by 2024 and around 550 million liters of efuel by 2026. Porsche wants to be co-neutral in 2030. Fuels made with renewable energy can make a contribution to this. The first tests with renewable fuels were successful at Porsche. However, it would of course need much larger amounts of air conditioning to supply the existing vehicle fleet of a country or even new petrol engine and diesel.

Electric drive will probably not be enough

In the meantime, electromobility is becoming increasingly important and one might think that synthetic fuels would be obsolete. However, the opposite seems to be the case. "Current studies show that in addition to forced electrification, large amounts of hydrogen and synthetic hydrocarbons are necessary to get out of the fossil age and to achieve the climate goals," explains Reiner Mangold, Head "Sustainable product development" At Audi. The Ingolstadt car manufacturer continues to pursue the development of e-fuels and e-gas; Incidentally, the latter, although VW said to the natural gas -powered vehicles.

One problem remains the energetic effort to produce synthetic fuels, and thus the costs – because they are still comparatively high. The Agora traffic transition initiative, which makes it clear that hydrogen and efuels without the use of 100 percent renewable energies are also not an ecologically sensible alternatives without the use of 100 percent.

The high costs are the big problem

The advocates of the alternative fuels, on the other hand, maintain that the electricity is obtained from regenerative sources and that the ambitious CO2 reduction targets can only be reached with an oil substitute. And since vehicles with combustion engines form the backbone of mobility for a few years, alternative fuels are required.

The research is carried out on all continents. The Canadian company "Carbon Engineering" already produces synthetic fuel by connecting carbon dioxide (CO2) to hydrogen. Harvard professor and co-founder of the start-up David Keith calculates that around one million tons of CO2 can be pulled out of the air with an industrial production of the fuel. This corresponds approximately to the CO2 emissions of around 250.000 cars or photosynthesis work of 40 million trees.

CO2 is pulled out of the air for climate sprit

The test facility in Squamish (British Columbia) already produces the ecological fuel. There, the carbon dioxide is subjected to a number of chemical processes to increase its concentration, to clean and compress it so that it can be supplied in gas form for use or storage. The salt from the solution is separated into small pellets in a kind of pellet reactor, which is then heated in a calzelator in order to release the CO2 in pure gas form, which in turn can then react with hydrogen.

In Germany, too, synthetic fuels are working on synthetic. Heion has developed an environmentally friendly diesel fuel by changing the molecular structure. The secret is the reactor in which the water and the diesel are merged and a synthesis of the two substances is carried out under a precisely defined pressure at a special time.

The result is a clean diesel. "We first radicalize the chemical structure of the diesel with subsequent stabilization through estrangation or patient," explains Andreas Heine, founder and CEO of Heion Diesel. In order to change the structure of a diesel fuel, a lot of energy, high temperature or high pressure are usually necessary. This should not be the case with this fuel. The energy for the production of the new diesel comes from the chemical reaction of the two starting materials. The central idea behind the procedure with which long hydrocarbon molecules are converted into short-chain is the cavitation.

Old Mercedes drives much cleaner

The first trial runs sound at least promising. In tests with a Mercedes 350 D (built in 1993, without a catalyst), the engine emitted by 75 percent and fewer soot particles and about 30 percent less nitrogen oxides. There is still the question of the costs. "For the operation of our reactor, which produces 5000 liters a day, we need about as much electricity per hour as a vacuum cleaner," claims Andreas Heine. One advantage of making environmentally friendly diesel is that it can be easily inserted into existing distribution chains. According to the company, the fuel passed hard tests in which the engine was brought to a hard knock by reducing the intake air.

Sunfire GmbH Synthetic fuel is supposed to compete with emobility

The experts at "MiBO test engine technology parts GmbH" certify the fuel lower soot pollutants than with conventional diesel. "We are technically ready for market, inexpensive and are already negotiating with the first larger companies," says Andreas Heine, who wants to put the first Heion petrol station into operation in the summer.

Politics are hesitant

However, Heine complains of a lack of support from politics: “We get little support politically, actually none. Our diesel does not seem to be wanted.“In Berlin one seems to stiffen the battery -operated electromobility too much in Berlin.

Sunfire, another German company that wants to launch an alternative fuel. "The Federal Government should work in the national implementation of the Renewable Energies Directive II (Red II) for equal treatment of e-fuel and advanced biofuels", says the Dresden company said. The company has been working on synthetic fuels for several years, which has been awakened by companies, such as the oil company totally. Sunfire specializes in high-temperature electrolysis, with which, by using green electricity, water and CO2, synthetic gas is initially produced, which can then be processed into synthetic fuel with further steps (fishing tropics).

Sebastian Kahnert/DPA central picture/dpa A system for the production of synthetic fuels stands on the SUNFIRE factory premises in front of the Gasometer.

Sunfire has found a way to make the synthesis gas in a single step and with a very high efficiency of around 80 percent. This reduces the investment and operating costs for power-to-x projects, as synthetic fuels significantly. The bottom line is that according to the Dresden company, "Well to Tank" on an industrial scale, i.e. from the electricity used to the finished fuel at the petrol station, results in an efficiency of around 60 percent. If you also include "tank to wheel" – that is, after the burning of the fuel in the engine – you get a total efficiency of around 21 percent.

Electricity in Germany is too expensive

An important lever is also the electricity in this process, which is simply too expensive in this country. That is why the Dresden company is drawn to Norway, where renewable energies from wind and hydropower are almost abundant. So pilot plants are already running in the Scandinavian country that produce the eco-fuel. At Sunfire you could get started right away: "The technology is ripe in the drawer, the infrastructure is available, there is sufficient green electricity in Norway," explains a spokesman for the Dresden company. However, it is still having to do so on the inadequate political framework. And what about there in the future in Germany? This is difficult to say. On the one hand – probably under pressure from the FDP – in the coalition agreement of the traffic light government, it was agreed that the targeted burner -off 2035 for new cars should come, but with a decisive restriction: cars that can be refueled with synthetic fuels should continue to be approved. This is almost the back door for the climate sprit. However, this is not interesting for the car manufacturers as long as this is not taken into account in the fleet CO2 balance.

On the other hand, the green coalition partner in particular should not be very interested in the air condition. Robert Habeck has to go to the Ministry of Economic Affairs, which is now at the same time "Ministry of Climate" is one of the country’s largest green electricity lobbyists as State Secretary to the Ministry: Patrick Graichen, founder of the Greens close to the Greens Agora Energy transition. .The Agora Energende and also the Agora Traffic transition from it are known to represent electromobility in particular. It relies on the fact that the overall traffic must reduce, i.e. less private car traffic is required to get along with the existing energy. A technical solution that enables usual traffic while reducing the emission at the same time does not fit into this strategy. The Agora Traffic turnover has also spoken against the fact that synthetic fuels are counted towards the fleet limit values of the manufacturers.

And that in an e driver forum. You also have to offer everything the customer wants and that … And that in an e driver forum. You also have to offer everything the customer wants and help the environment. It’s like with the vaccine. Many vaccination opponents would take the dead man. But it took far too long for him to come. Similar to electrical or hydrogen. You only rely on one technique, although many were willing to do something for the environment. Just don’t electronically. But until this insight comes too late as always. And then it is whined afterwards that you have done too little for the environment. If you want another environmentally friendly fuel, you should get it. No matter whether efficient or not. No matter what it costs. There are also people who look when it helps the environment, not at the expense or that it is efficient. But those who are already driving a car think too radical.

  2. Elektro o d e r hydrogen?
The question is already being quarried. H2 is inconceivable without E if it should be "environmentally friendly". Then it is manufactured by electrolysis & this is necessary for this green current. If a fuel cell is operated with the H2, it is an electric car. That would come as a BEV with the electricity for the H2 production 3x so far. This inefficiency may be Muller’s lust, economically she is a no-go.

  3. All organic fuels/fuels have a problem
Namely that the seals on and in the engine are attacked by the biofuel and have a short lifespan. For this reason, all car manufacturers say that you shouldn’t drive with 100 % organic petrol or biodiesel, and that’s why only 7 % biodiesel are mixed in diesel, and 5 % ethanol in petrol. The only country where there is 100% biofuel and exclusively, Brazil is yes, and there are constantly struggling with replacing the seals, and the cars are correspondingly often in the workshop for exchanging the seals. Bio fuel hardens the seals and these become brittle and brittle

Logic against Dogma? If that works out? With the experts who are in power with us, I have quiet doubts about it. It should be clear to everyone that it will not be possible to generate enough electricity to operate all cars electrically. Especially since we are still sawing our own gas supply.

  5. Good step in the right direction !
Because whether the climate change is man -made or natural, we definitely have to decarbonize because the fossil energy sources dry up in the foreseeable future. Climate diesel is an elegant method for storing and mobile use of energy from non-fossil sources. The energy density is higher than with batteries and safety is still greater, since a diesel tank alone cannot deliver uncontrolled energy stations, a battery, because there is no second component (z.B. O2) As with the diesel, need to release the energy. The manufacturing processes exist and can be easily expanded, what is missing is a lot of non-fossil energy.

  8. Counting?
If the "mibO test engine technology parts GmbH" develops a procedure/fuel, the energy supplied with 24 kW (vacuum cleaner 1000W performance), 5000L diesel with an energy values of 9.8kWh/l, i.e. 49000kW, has the physics in the entire universe on the entire universe Head! But it is more likely that the site has misinterpreted and published the numbers again incorrectly. But yes if we consume all the fuel that we consume in D, about 50 miot, everyone can calculate how much climate -neutral electricity we would need to make it in D. Save yourself to expect – it doesn’t work!

  9. The real numbers
Just like to think about it! Illuminate all numbers and do not always pick the per data that just fit out of the article, then it won’t be so great with the synfuel. 1L diesel has an energy content of 9.8kWh. To produce 1l syndiesel – climate -neutral (i.e. generate CO2 from the air, green hydrogen, fisherman drip) – you need approx. 18kw and that is the best we can do here. Then the 18kW energy must also be 100% EE! 18kw is a good value but the ICEV with 1l diesel comes just 20km with a BEV with 18 kW a good 80km. Sorry but this is a milk man into account.

  10. The strategy is very different.
It seems to me that, even if nobody has expressed it directly, the long -term strategy of NGOs such as Augora and others, as well as the Greens, is the long -term reduction in automotive mobility under the guise of climate protection. Because they know that Germany will never produce enough green electricity to replace today’s vehicle fleet with electric cars without the risk of blackouts. The time will come where the possession of a car is only reserved for the rich. Not that you can no longer afford the car, there will still be used. But the operating and energy costs will no longer be affordable for many. This means that the vehicle fleet is then automatically reduced without bans and the BVerfG has no objections.
