The Mazda CX-7 has hardly been seen on German roads so far. That could change soon, because the off-road vehicle is now also available as a diesel.

The CX-7 has a raised structure, but is only vaguely reminiscent of an off-road vehicle. Despite all-wheel drive, his territory is limited to the street and the city.

Mazda has come up with a clever solution for the luggage compartment: the seats are not folded down using a button on the backrest, as usual, but with an easily accessible one Lever in the trunk…

…this saves climbing and easily increases the loading volume from 455 to 1348 liters.

So far, Mazda’s great climber in Germany has been left behind by the competition. Now the Japanese have given it a little cosmetic, but above all a powerful diesel engine. Price and consumption also make the CX-7 attractive. For the start on the mountain, however, he lacks a crucial detail.

B.The Mazda CX-7 has long been an outsider in the field of large off-road vehicles, at least in Europe. The design was praised, and there is nothing wrong with the chassis, especially since the car is now even stiffer and is therefore even more stable around corners. But under the hood, the Japanese had so far only had to offer the 260 hp petrol engine from the Mazda 3 MPS. He doesn’t do his thing badly. But in a segment in which more than three out of four customers order a diesel in Europe, you never get a leg on the ground.

Mazda is finally drawing the consequences from this. In the middle of the term there is therefore not only a little fresh make-up for the body with a new radiator grille and decorative trim on the flank as well as new colors and shapes in the interior space. Now the Japanese are finally bringing the overdue diesel to the start and at the same time lowering the entry price. Because while the petrol engine, which is only available in the highest equipment variant, now costs 36,990 euros, the diesel in the CX-7 is available from 29,990 euros.

The four-cylinder, already tried and tested in the Mazda 6, has a displacement of 2.2 liters, has 173 hp and delivers 400 Newton meters (Nm) to the road via all-wheel drive with variable power distribution. Of course, the competitors, especially from Germany, are a little stronger with their V6 diesels and therefore have a stronger start. But they are also significantly more expensive across the board.

In addition, the four-cylinder in the CX-7 is definitely enough for a leisurely ride over the left lane. Cultivated and without great effort, it accelerates the 1.8-tonne Kraxler in 11.3 seconds to 100 km / h and reaches a respectable 200 km / h. Only when the going is steep uphill do you have to step hard on the pedal and often reach for the gear stick of the six-speed gearbox, which is unfortunately a bit too clumsy for quick gear changes. An automatic would certainly help.

In addition to the new engine and the fresh design, there are a number of additional extras. For example, the all-wheel drive from the Mazda 3 can take over the lane change assistant, which warns of vehicles in the blind spot. In addition, there is finally a fully integrated navigation system with a reversing camera and automatic hazard warning flashers as standard.

While the gasoline engine is on the list with 10.4 liters, the diesel is satisfied with an average of 7.5 liters. And it’s cleaner too. Because it is the first import model ever to get a special nitrogen oxide filter in addition to a three-way catalytic converter and soot filter.

To do this, a few droplets of the urea solution AdBlue are injected into the exhaust gas every kilometer, with the help of which the nitrogen oxide (NOx) is converted into harmless nitrogen and oxygen on a further catalytic converter. At least 40 percent of the NOx particles are filtered in this way, and as a thank you there is also the seal of approval for the diesel "5 euro". The engineers have placed the AdBlue supply in an additional tank under the unchanged 455 liter trunk and dimensioned it so that it lasts for 20,000 kilometers and does not have to be refilled until the next service interval.

The Japanese have high hopes for the upgrading of the CX-7: "Now the car is ideally positioned for global competition, ”says program manager Masashi Otsuka. "The car, which was previously tailored to North America, now has a global format with the new diesel variant. "
