Opel astra

A new bolt of lightning strikes

Opel shows the new Astra. The compact class is coming onto the market at a time of upheaval – and consequently has to be prepared for anything. The range includes petrol and diesel, as well as a plug-in hybrid and a purely electric variant.

The new Opel Astra.

The new Opel Astra comes at a difficult time. Because most customers will probably still opt for a petrol or diesel drive. But with a new model generation, the manufacturer always has to look a few years into the future. Because the new model has to be on the market for the next five to seven years without looking outdated. Especially at the moment it is difficult to predict how the market will develop. That's why Opel opted for full flexibility: the Astra is not only available with conventional combustion engines, but also as a plug-in hybrid and with a pure electric drive. What all versions have in common is the completely new design of what is now the sixth generation of the compact model. Like the "Mokka" crossover, the Astra also bears the new brand face, the "Opel Vizor". The clear, black surface seamlessly accommodates the headlights and, together with the striking bar on the hood, is intended to be reminiscent of legendary Opel models from the past, such as the Admiral. Despite references to the past, the new Astra looks anything but old-fashioned. Sharp edges and modern LED lighting technology give it a highly modern look. This also applies to the interior, where digital technology dominates. A duo of two monitors stretches out in front of the driver; one as a speedometer unit, one as a touchscreen infotainment system. The two monitors are elegantly combined under a glazed surface. Nevertheless, Opel remains reasonable and does not leave out all the buttons and knobs in the cockpit. For example, there are still conventional controls for the air conditioning or the volume. As further support for the driver, there is an army of assistance systems and even a head-up display.

shared base

The new Astra shares the technical basis with other models from the Stallantis group, while the predecessor was still based on a platform from the GM past. The "EMP2" platform is also used, for example, in the Peugeot 308, the DS4 or the Citroën C5 Aircross. The platform can be flexibly adjusted in size – and is particularly suitable for different types of drive. At 4.37 meters, the Astra is no longer, but it grows in width to 1.86 meters. The wheelbase has been extended by 13 millimeters, which provides more space in the back seat.
The trunk holds up to 1250 liters with the rear seat folded down – at least in the variants with a pure combustion engine, with the plug-in hybrid it should be a little smaller.
Speaking of the drive: The new Astra can be ordered as early as autumn, and Opel has announced that the first deliveries will be in early 2022. First in the versions, which are at least partially powered by an internal combustion engine. The petrol engines are 1.2-liter three-cylinder with 110 and 130 hp. The basic model is only available with a 6-speed manual transmission, while the more powerful version can be switched to an 8-speed automatic if required. As a diesel, the Astra comes to dealers with a 1.5-liter four-cylinder and 130 hp – also with a manual or automatic transmission. Opel states consumption as just 4.4 l/100 km.
Right from the market launch, Opel is also offering two plug-in hybrids – with a choice of 180 or 225 hp system output. In both cases, the electric motor delivers 110 hp and is powered by a 12.4 kWh battery; that's enough for around 60 kilometers of electric driving. The newcomer will then be purely electric from 2023 as the Astra-e. However, Opel does not yet give any technical details here; just as little reveals Opel, what it looks like with a successor to the popular station wagon version. The prices for the new Astra are not yet known. The Astra currently starts at 25,410 francs.
