Opel drives the important infrastructure expansion so important for electromobility at its hometown. Already today, the Opel campus in Russelsheim has over 500 charging points for the continuously growing electrical fleet of the company. Another 540 public charging points are currently being installed by the city of Russelsheim am Main on the parking spaces around the company headquarters.
Since all new Opel models are designed and developed in Russelsheim, the expansion of the charging infrastructure at the company headquarters was of particular importance. The announced construction of around 500 internal loading points for business cars and developing vehicles is now completed, so that a steadily growing part of the company fleet can be electricity.
The initiative is associated with two conveyor projects. The one – E-Mobility Lab Hesse – is a partner for around 120 charging points in the field of engineering in Russelsheim and Dudenhofen, which can be used for developing vehicles. E-Mobility Lab Hesse researches together with Opel, while the development center becomes a real laboratory for electromobility, power supply, intelligent charging stations and intelligent load management.
Opel electric car charging infrastructure in the context of the second FOrderprojts Electric City Russelsheim have created more than 380 charging points for service and business cars on the Opel campus. There are still 540 public charging stations in the parking spaces around the factory that the city of Russelsheim will implement in another step by Electric City.
Electric City is a joint project of several partners, to which the city of Russelsheim am Main, Opel, the Hochschule Rheinmain, the urban residential building society and the mobility advice Urban Mobility Innovations (formerly B2M) belong. Together, the partners want to massively drive the expansion of charging infrastructure for electric cars. Funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics, around 1200 charging points arise, of which more than 800 should be publicly accessible within the city area. Opel has already implemented his part, attributable to urban activities in all districts and residential areas, at the campus of the Hochschule Rheinmain, in residential complexes of the WEOBAU as well as parking spaces on shopping centers.

Another aspect on the way to e-mobility: the modular battery storage, created under E-Mobility Lab Hesse in complete self-employment at Opel, has gone into operation in Dudenhofen. The battery storage uses exposed vehicle batteries of the Opel Ampera to temporarily store electricity. This stationary battery insert in the so-called Second Life serves to balance consumption peaks and thus stabilize the power grid. A total of 18 vehicle batteries are reused in the battery memory, with the storage capacity of which eight electric cars can be loaded simultaneously. Alternatively, a four-person household could be powered for a month for a month.
The basis for the successful implementation of the extensive electrostrategy is of course in the models – and here has a lot done for Opel in recent years. From Corsa-E to Zafira-E, from COMBO-E to MOVANO-E, from the car to the light commercial vehicle OPEL offer its customers a diverse portfolio of electrified vehicles and covers the most important segments. But that’s just the beginning. This year, an electrified variant of the OPEL ASTRA is followed, until 2024, there will be an electrified variant of each Opel.
Opels Electrofoffensive is part of the entire strategy of the Stellantis Group presented during the eV Day. The company intends to become the market leader in low-emission vehicles (LEV). By 2030, the LEV mix of Stellantis for cars in Europe should grow steadily on more than 70 percent – 10 percentage points on the current forecasts of the industry for the overall market mix. In addition, Opels’s parent company Stellantis works on innovative charging solutions.
