We took a closer look at the rounded compact car at a sneak preview
Ora is the currency of a quasi-autonomous Boer republic in South Africa, the name of a potato variety and of course part of the Benedictines' Ora et labora. Car connoisseurs also know that this is the electric car brand of the Chinese company Great Wall acts.
Now Ora wants to expand to Europe. At a sneak preview shortly before the IAA, I was able to take a look at the first model, the Ora Cat.
Haomao, Pengkemao, Shandianmao and so on: The Ora models often have the term "mao" (cat) in their names in China. The Punk Cat (aka Pengkemao) we introduced a few months ago, and the car in our pictures was previously known as the Good Cat (aka Haomao). But in Europe the names are supposed to follow a different system, which the Chinese and German marketing are still working on. Cat is therefore only a provisional name.
After a first tour of the car, I got the impression that it was a small car. Exactly right, says the Italian product manager, that's exactly what we wanted to achieve: The car should appear as compact as a small car, but in reality the Cat is around 4.20 meters long as a VW ID.3 – a compact car.
The second impression was: What a strange design. I really like the front – it vaguely reminds of a Porsche or Mini. The blue-green pearl effect paint and the white roof are also okay. But the heck? Well, judge for yourself. The special thing about it is that the taillights have been hidden. It's not my taste, but the car isn't supposed to appeal to people in their mid-fifties, but to young people.
In addition, there should be a second "GT" equipment, which gives the car a dynamic touch. There is also a lowering, air inlets at the front, a rear diffuser and a small roof spoiler. Red color accents for the wheels and in other places also improve the look, as we could see in the first photos.
It is powered by a 120 kW electric motor, which is supposed to bring the car up to around 160 km / h. Two battery versions with 49 and 63 kWh are planned, which should result in ranges of around 300 and 400 km, respectively. The batteries come from the Chinese manufacturer CATL. Charging is done either with up to 22 kW alternating current or at the direct current fast charging station. Then you should bring the small battery from 0 to 80 percent SoC in 45 minutes, with the large battery it takes ten minutes longer.
As strange as the exterior looks, the cockpit is just as successful. On the dashboard there is a standard 20.5-inch double display with appealing displays, the materials in the version we tested are almost at a premium level. The surfaces feel like leather, but are vegan. We found the feel of the diamond quilted "leather" on the inside of the door particularly impressive.
In terms of technology, the electric cat offers matrix LED headlights with which you can leave the high beam switched on because oncoming traffic is "faded out" by switching off light elements. A radar system and a front camera for semi-autonomous driving are standard equipment. There is face recognition inside, which makes it possible to automatically adapt certain settings to the driver. For example, the driver's seat automatically moves into the correct position after getting in.
In the rear, the Ora first has a surprising amount of space. No wonder, because during the development priority was given to the space in the rear. Disadvantage: The trunk is much smaller than usual in compact cars. Balancing heavy crates of drinks over the high threshold should not be easy either.

The prices for the Ora Cat should start at around 30,000 euros. This is cheap, because so far you only get small electric cars like the Opel Corsa-e or Renault Zoe. We just hope that it's the price before funding – unfortunately we didn't ask for it.

Orders should start this year; Deliveries will then begin in the first half of 2022. Before that, however, the car still has to get type approval. When it comes to crash safety, Ora has no worries: The newcomer deserves five stars, believes the brand's small Germany team. The latter was put together (from apparently experienced people) in record time. Our sneak preview was the dress rehearsal for the team, the premiere is next Monday at the IAA, where the Ora Cat will be officially presented. If everything goes well, Ora will later add a small car and an SUV – all purely electric cars.
A second Great Wall brand, which also wants to enter the European market from 2022, is showing a large SUV with plug-in hybrid drive, the Wey Coffee 01, at the IAA; more on our sister site Motor1.
